#runningman 🏃 The acievement of a lifelong dream.
However I have a recurrent knee problem with inflammation of cartiledge and tendon being the main probllem. I am looking for 3 hours 45 min although anything under 4 hours would be great provided I run economically.
PB of 4 hours 55 mins set in the Shakespeare Marathon in May 2006.

Did not quite manage 3hr 45 due to a slow start due to sheer numbers but delighted to smash my PB and get under 4 hours.
An amazing fantastic day and a race that wilol never be bettered as a runner as this was an ambition fulfilled. Unaffiliated 2:36:28 3:52:06 3:45:00 3:52:06 52.38

AlB OK - as predicted, no PB. Was doing well until mile 24, then I let the gremlins get in and I dared to walk through the tunnel. But the legs were fine and I have to admit to recovering very quickly afterwards. So bring it on next year and this time I\'ll stay injury free and get that sub 3.30 time! beders after training like mad and blowing up in the heat last year in 4.16, have strugled with plantar fasciitis in left heel for virtually the whole year so very limited long runs and speed work so was just hoping to get round. Set off nice and steady and had my most enjoyable run ever, ran round with a running mate hoping to get a PB and stayed with her when she started to struggle around 16 miles. Felt great all the way round, legs were fine and got in 8 minutes faster than last year in 4.08, what happened ?? will try the jog approach next year, never finished a marathon feeling so good !! Blodwen FLM (my first marathon!!) Oh my god, that was a totally amazing experience!!!!! Very emotional. I didn't stop grinning for most of the first 18 miles. Started by running a mile & then walking a minute at each mile marker. Totally ran out of energy at about mile 20, so had a gel & some water & walked a bit.The last 6 miles were not to any plan at all - tried running 10 min chunks & walking 1, but this changed depending on how I was feeling. Wanted to enjoy my first marathon - not smash myself to pieces!!! Met a friend of my Mum's near the finish, so ran the last mile or so with him, which was fab. I loved (most of) the whole experience - all the bands, the crowds all the way but especially on the Embankment & the final mile, high-fiving the kids, the jelly babies from the Fetch gang, the jaffa cake & jelly babies from the Runner's World Gang! Very swollen & sore left knee afterwards, but otherwise feel pretty good. HURRAH! (Have entered my time as my watch time, cos I stopped it a couple of times when I stopped for the loo & to put my rain jacket on. Chip time was 06:07:12) (Splits: 5K-38:33 10K-1:18:38 15K-2:00:35 20K-2:42:16 Half-2:51 25K-3:24:11 30K-4:11 35K-4:57:19 40K-5:47:03 Finish-6:07:12) Unaffiliated 6:00:08 6:00:08 6:00:08 37.90
blue (pete) Well. What a day. Beautiful, sunny morning, gor to Blackheath nice n early, got sorted etc. Due to various problems with Ian we started right at the back on pen 9 and took 12 mins to get through start. First 6 miles were great, then the wheels started to fall off. the first lot of rain reallt did for us - cold and wet, times slipped by 2 mins/mile and Ian's problems and subsiquent frequency of toilet stops became, in itself a problem. Great to see supporters all wearing Reading shirts opposite Fetchpoint 22 - did you see the flag? A good session around the ilse of Dogs and the rain came again and more cold and cramps set in. Relieved to get to Mile 22 for kisses and cuddles and half an Orange from group 7. Then onward - Ian collapsed with cramp at about mile 23 but after 10 mins of fantastic effort by St Johns Ambulance we set of at a slow shuffle/walking pace. Deadly slow but it was a question of finishing now...and we did. All safe and sound...RESULT. Thanks guys - sorry to those who lost their bets Unaffiliated 4:25:43 5:27:48 4:30:00 5:27:48 39.17

Cazros 1st wish - thatI get rid of the dizziness and actually make it to the starting line
2nd - that I crack sub 3:45!!!!!!

Woo - Yeah!! I did it!! An awesome, awesome day. When I finally found a doctor to prescribe me something to conquer the dizziness back in January (eustachian tube disorder, in case anyone's interested) I threw myself into training with huge enthusiasm. Hence a much better prepared runner at Blackheath on Sunday. The dizziness stayed away, I paced myself and negative split and beat my PB by over 10 mins - and got myself a GFA time along the way. Right knee became m.painful at mile 23 (compensatory).

Afterwards the left knee recovered in a few weeks, but the right took about 6 weeks.
Before both knee generally re-occured during the GBR.

contraflow Started at the blue start at the back of Pen 7. I wanted to do 9 minute mile pace but there were so many runners in front that it was totally impossible. Ended up being forced to run at the pace of the surrounding people and just overtaking when any little gaps came up. Went through 20 miles 13 minutes slower than the time I ran it in a smaller race last month.
Felt fine up until 18/19 miles when things started going wrong. I think I hit something of 'the wall', just lost my energy and my pace dropped, which was annoying because for the first time in the race there was a bit of space in the field. Did last miles 20-25 as a mixture of run/walk but ran all of last mile and finished in the rain in 4:20.
The organisation of the event was excellent but the crowded field and narrow roads meant I didn't feel I did myself justice. If I do another marathon it will be somewhere else. Unaffiliated 4:20:37 4:20:37 4:10:00 4:20:37 47.78

Cormorant What a fantastic event this is. Thank you to the organisers and to all the volunteers at the start and finish, at drinks stations and along the route. Despite the rain we were elated, most of us - especially the Masai warriors I saw (but heard first) at about 4 miles in. You feel good partly because - unless you're very near the front or very near the back - you are with other runners the whole way. The blue start - along with the proper runners - was quicker than the red start I was at two years ago. What a shame you just see boards and scaffolding round the Cutty Sark - and how come running towards the Houses of Parliament at last they didn't seem to get any nearer? Has that sign reading '385 yards to go from here' always been on the course? I liked it anyway. As for my own performance: what an advert for the Jade Goody marathon-training programme. *UPDATE*
Amazing day, ran with Casper all the way round. So proud of her for digging in over the last 6 miles when she was really struggling and finishing in an amazing time especially considering the amnount of injuries she had during training . Gutted for Death who had to stop 3 times when his knee gave way, but huge respect to him for battling on and finishing when a lot of people would have given up. Amazing crowds and atmosphere all the way round that bought a lump to my throat at times. The run in on birdcage walk was particularly emotional as it was the end of a long journey that started back in July last year when I started running and decided to enter. I will be back for more!! Durbat Had a fantastic day, what an atmosphere. Crowds were fantastic even in the rain. I made it to 22 miles looking forward to Fetch point but wheels came off at 23 mile. Had a little walk and a drink, then gritted teeth to run / jog / hobble last couple of miles. Classic encouragement heading towards the Mall from some Army PT type guy in the crowd '' come on you tosspots its only a road run get going'' brilliant. Never felt so bad during a run before, cold, wet, legs cramping but all forgotten as soon as crossed the line. Go-KL October: Have a good for age place for 08 (and 09), so am already setting my sights on this race. If I can get over this back / groin injury, I reckon I have good base fitness from this year to put in a big push for 08. 02:52 is realistic based on my half marathon times so will look to be training for this sort of time.
Update: 25/2/08: As I had so long off with injury, I am now training to see if I can pull off a sub 3 on less than optimal training like last year.
London Marathon - will put in a full report later. Suffice to say delighted with a three minute PB. The rain tried its best to stop me but I kept on going. Missed out on running my third straight negative split by 1 second! (1:27:05 out 1:27:06) but I guess you can call that even paced... Was always thinking the right leg, either the groin or the knee was going to go but it never did. Was hard work in the final couple of miles but still cannot complain in the slightest. Gobi This all depends on the early part of the year. Worst case should be a sub 2.45 but I admit I am thinking I can go quite a bit faster. Again I will report in nearer the time to update those betters out there.Confident I can run close to 6mm and I will be having a 1week PB.

Hating to sound down but 2.43.07(04 on the watch)

1.20.19 at half way (60 seconds lost to toilet)
2.03.20 at 20 miles (survived the rain but chest sore)
2.35.36 at 25 miles (slowed here for no reason just head gone)
2.43.07 (paced myself home to get a PB)

Knew early I could not run with Coro but thought 2.38 was still on. Race ruined with toilet break at 8miles which my head never really recovered from. Rain made me want to stop at Canary. All in all not happy with my head or my bladder.

gray I'd recommend anyone to walk through St James' Park early on race day when there's nobody about, as I did this morning - everything's set up and it evokes an eerie atmosphere of anticipation. The operation that lies behind this race is nothing short of brilliant and the atmosphere is totally stonking. I loved the Maasai Warriors, the high fives, the sweets, the personal encouragement (despite being referred to on some occasions by possibly dyslexic spectators as 'Gary', and, in one case, 'Gazza'!). I could have snogged the bloke who was giving out the Mars Bars around mile 19 and never want to see another Energy Gel in my entire life. Preparation was blighted by a calf injury but I managed to get round in almost an identical time as my only other FLM. Having sat down to write this, though, 7 hours later, I shall need help getting out of my chair and I'll require my bed moving downstairs. London Marathon: the pain aside, what's not to like? Highland Lad Have been following the sub 3:30 race plan but as this is my very first marathon I have no idea if the conditions will allow this kind of time (for me). I'll be well happy if I can come close to 3.45.

Was in pen 6 so didn't get the best of starts so had some making up to do, knew at this point that I wouldn't get much better than 3.45, anyway, managed to make up some time and was looking good for 3.45. Was really enjoying the atmosphere and the supporters were great. I heard lots of people calling my name, they probably weren't all for me as 'Dave' is quite a common name but to me, they were all shouting for me. Things went wrong at 18 miles, my left knee packed up and I saw 3.45 start do fade. Now with sub 4 on my mind I was determined not to walk and managed to make it in with just under 5 minutes to spare. Over all a fantastic day I will always remember and has made me more determind to crack 3.45. Unaffiliated 3:55:16 3:55:16 3:45:00 3:55:16 52.13
Hills of Death (HOD) Went ok considering got the shites on the way round stopped of a couple of times. Gave Hendo and manly hug. Don't get any easier !See Trazza, Scooby Dave and Getting there run past me. Red tomato was in front of us went past her at 10 mile hopefully she's ok didn't see her again. (Maybe she past us when I nipped into the loo).
Fetchpoint excellent again. 16/17 miles it got tough don't it always dug in deep and got through other side. Wall of sound from Tower Hill till end got me there and then a bout of cramp at 800m to go. Grabbed some water from supporters they seemed to get the hump when I placed it on the pavement beside me. They did tell me to take it ! Felt good crossing the line :) Barnet & District AC, Riverside Runners 3:38:50 3:49:48 3:37:00 3:49:48 53.59
Hipster I only got a last minute marathon place mid February and therefore time is limited to two months marathon training and also this will be my first marathon. As a result there's no pressure in terms of an expected time.

**update** - note to self, never run again with an injury! Knee was twinging from 3 miles and the it wouldn't allow me to go any quicker than 8.45 - 9min miles. Did the 1st half in 1:57 then it was downhill from there as 2nd half was 20 mins slower than the 1st. This was the hardest and most frustrating race I have ever done! I did enjoy the atmosphere and the day, but I can't wait to do another marathon not carrying a time stretching injury. Unaffiliated 3:31:26 3:31:26 3:55:00 4:14:23 47.84

Hollywoof! Sorry to anyone who bet on me... but HUGE thanks to everyone who turned up to support.

In short.... I had fun :-)

Spent the hour in the toilet before the race (I probably won the smelliest toilet of the day)

Then off for the race start...

First couple of miles were slow (almost 9 minutes for the first one) but lots of excellent for conversation - met so many people I knew :-)

Then picked the speed up.... by the time I got to Cutty Sark I was in 7:30 min/mile territory.

Ran with clubmate for a while... then just before Tower Bridge down came the rain and the wind too. It was horrid.

Passed Fetch supporters - gave them a good Flash :-)

Then ran with Running Bhoy - he's a loud nutter... and was supposed to be with a nine minute mile crowd... whereas we went past half way in 1:41:46 - which is 7:46 average... nutter

Carried on into Docklands in the rain - felt odd goin gthe wrong way around (last time I ran FLM the route was reversed and the cobbles were still there).

The mudchute cheer was lovely - I like the pirate lot.

Then Shiraz was there... she briefly joined in but she couldn't keep up with me :-)

Then the legs were tired but I knew there were only 8 miles to go....

Dug in... pushed forwards... one mile at a time.... Pit Stop Crew cheered me up in Docklands (Docklands seemed quieter than it was 3 years ago)

Back through Fetchpoint and lots of high fives - trying to cheer them up in the rain!

Then just four miles to go.... four miles... four bl@@dy miles...

Counting down through the miles... overtaking one person at a time.... and getting overtaken occasionally too...

Then the embankment... the site of big ben... the club support crew just before 25 miles... then push... push... push...

And the legs were screaming and I struggled to maintain 8 minute miles... but people who've seen me said I looked comfortable?! And I looked for JD in the crowd (most years he's normally holding a cow bell at Whitehall) but he wasn't there... so instead I just count down the yards...

And then birdcage walk... and then the site of the palace... and the signs go from 800 to 600 to 400...

And I don't sprint... instead I run tall and cheer and clap the crowd.

Cross the line - smile for the cameras... slow to a walk... then later stop my watch... cool, calm, sophisticated ;-)

Really I quite enjoyed FLM
- the preparation wasn't so good - the cold and skiing in December, the niggle in January, then work getting in the way... and those three marathons/ultras in the last 5 weeks...
- but the race was good
- and I'm happy with my time
- and there were so many other people with so much to celebrate
- and I know how to get faster :-)
- and life's worth enjoying

Impossible is Nothing PB but absolutely gutted not to go under 3 hours. More or less on course (but struggled to hit 2:55 pace) until 21 miles when the wheels came off: legs just gave up the ghost and irrevocably slowed. Once the 3 hour slipped away I lost the will to fight the pain and had a few walks despite the screaming crowds. Gutted. Means I might have to do another one in Autumn. martyb A thoroughly fantastic experience but ultimately a poor time for me. I was absolutely gutted to post this but at the 18mile mark my calfs would not stop cramping. I have never wanted to just give up as much as on that cold and wet afternoon knowing the time I had set for myself was quickly going down the swanny. I swore at the 23 mile mark I was never running a marathon again, but as the medal was hung around my neck I uttered the words Unaffiliated 4:14:29 5:03:53 4:10:00 5:24:59 37.40
MattTheRat Was aiming for sub-3 and bang on target until 21 miles. Then cramp kicked in and it was struggle to the finish. Once I knew the sub-3 was gone I sort of lost the will to live and crawled home. Maybe it was the bug all week, maybe the rain through Docklands, maybe fuelling problems. Never mind, a 7 minutes PB and a GFA time again. Victoria Park Harriers & Tower Hamlets AC 2:51:39 2:59:12 2:59:59 3:04:58 69.42

My First Marathon.
Totally Injury Free for a change. Breezed through first 10 miles 15 mins ahead of 3.45 training plan, although i knew that i would be quicker than that. Docklands was dreary with the onset of rain, locked on to Girl with Winchester Vest from around 17 to 26 which helped me pace to the end. No Leg Pain yet, sure that wont take long!

Mazza aka Fitso Grim - enjoyed the first 6 miles but couldn't wait to finish and get home. Apart from the start when the sun was glorious, I was wet and cold the whole time. Right knee went halfway round. Spent a good 15 mins waiting for loos . By miles 18 my knee had gone completely and I couldn't even run - walk. Hobbled the last 8 miles in serious pain. Not many highlights for me, though I did see quite a lot of the Masai runners and a I had an unrequested leg massage from a very sweet old lady. Nearly an hour and a half slower than my last FLM. Never ever again - unless of course I get a place in the 2009 ballot . Unaffiliated 4:02:00 5:17:00 4:30:00 5:17:00 43.86

Miss Sweden Ok, so I've got an entry. Yippee! I know my Amsterdam time was pretty slow, but there were extenuating circumstances. Let's hope it doesn't happen again!

Well, the race didn't quite go as planned. I had swollen glands on the day (get the excuses in early!) but felt ok to run. However my quads just gave up after about 15 miles. Don't know what happened. One minute they were fine, the next they just cramped up. I also had an extended toilet stop- some poor sod was in the lavvy for about 10 mins before me, clearly not a well puppy. Why do I always choose the wrong one to queue at?

Although I didn't reach my target time I'm hoping that the fact I got a PB will still get those people who bet on me some points! North Shields Polytechnic AC 4:27:26 4:39:11 4:15:00 4:39:11 48.02

Very very slow start - over 12 mins for first mile. Ground to a halt several times due to the congested streets, walked by the Cutty Sark... so by mile 6 came along I was 8 mins behind schedule!

First ever marathon ,runnnig for MenCap, and so far I am looking forward to it (is that normal!?)
Anyway, the time I have predicted is what I'd like to do, but anything less than 4 hours (or am I being too optimistic?) would be a good result!!
Good luck to everyone else doing this run as well.

So frustrating as i could run about a 100 yards then cramp walk and run walk and run etc. for 9 miles. Couldnt even stretch cos the opposing muscle group hamstrings/quads would cramp!!!! GRRRRRR!!! sammyd Well, 4 weeks prior I was up for a sub 3hr, but due to a calf injury, I spent the last 4wks in the pool running and swimming, so reviewed my predction to 3.15/3.20 hours.

it was hard from mile 14, my quads were burning, then when it went cold, I started to cramp up, so last few miles were murder, but got under 3.15, so well pleased considering the injury!!!

**** UPDATE******way hay... really pleased with my first marathon time, everything went according to plan, cruised the 1st 13 miles, garmin packed up a 16 miles so didn't have a clue on pace but started to run quicker until 20, 20-24 my quads were in agony but was running quicker at 6.15-6.20 pace then 24 miles my right knee decides to pack up, hobbled for over a mile, and lost about a minute by putting in a 7.20, had 2 ibuprofen, dropped the 1st, then downed the second ibuprofen without water, mouth instantly dried up, at this point the crowd was keeping me going, luckily jonah caught me up and we picked up the pace again at 25.2, then sprinted the last 1km and finished with a smile.*** Stockport Harriers & AC 2:45:46 2:53:52 3:15:00 2:53:52 72.65

Sunbed Athlete Well chuffed with the time considering i've just came off a 5 wk lay-off.Only had 3 wks training prior to Race day with 30 - 40 mins runs & only 1 big run which was 13 miles.
Got Championship Entry so the day started well with our own toilets/drinks/warm-up area.Headed on to the main road & the stewards marched us forward to the area where the Elite runners were warming-up just before the race start.Gun went off & set out @ 6 min miles pace & stuck to it quite well.Went thru 10 miles in 1hr,then 20 miles in 2.02 then finished with a 2.43:20.Cant complain a bit considering the state of my fitness was in.Definately going back next year hopefully fitter & stronger not on physically but mentally to & hope to have a better shot @ the AAA's C'ships.Superbly organised. The crowds espically over Tower Bridge were fantastic. That helped emensly. The other 3 lads i travelled down with ran 2.30,2.41 & 2.42. SUPERWOMAN63 Well my 2nd time and it didn't disappoint. Set off slow and steady as usual didn't enjoy the rain too much as was soaked and a bit cold but then weather brightened up, had set myself targets to reach CUTTY SARK, TOWER BRIDGE, BIG BEN & the FINISH LINE. I absolutely LOVE Tower Bridge the crowds were brilliant along here having your name on your vest is a MUST the crowd keep you going. EMBANKMENT felt special again and the crowds along here are phenomenal they make your tired legs perk up and made me SMILE a bigger smile than my picture !! Aside from a bit of cramp in my left leg and slight stitch & stomach cramps l felt fine. How lovely to see Big Ben again and here l was determined to dig in as l saw a sign that said 600 metres to go l felt really happy and eventually l saw a sign that said 385 yards to go and that was a lovely sight to see and l ran quite well ( l thought so anyway ) through the middle entrance and lifted my arms high. As l was given my medal l got a bit tearful as l couldn't quite believe l had run my 2nd marathon. The medal was special , l was HAPPY & l felt GREAT. ToastRunner Was hoping and on target for quicker by the rain really got to me but PB by 7 seconds. Also got stitch just before the rain after swallowing a gel too quickly. Overall I think I lost about a minute due to those two issues. One good / bad point was how strong I was at the finish suggesting I can go quick but didn't get everything out of the tank on the day. Really please though with the PB and how I kept concentration despite the external factors, proved the previous sub 2:45 was no fluke and combined with the lessons from last year and this year hope for sub 2:40 soon. UltraCas Hated the crowded course and the noise gave me a headache - I wanted to see what it was like to do a big marathon with lots of support, so now I've done it and confirmed I don't like it - I'll stick to small and friendly in the future. Sorry to everyone who bet one me - up to mile 17 I was a good bet, then I got stuck behind loads of slower people and weaved and weaved and then lost the will to live.

Vicksta Mixed feelings. I got the GFA time I was looking for, but didn't do myself justice at all. I felt totally dreadful from about 12 miles to 20 miles (Couldn't hold a 8 min/mile at 12 miles, yet my HM PB is 7.29 min/mile). Just felt sick and lethargic. Suddenly without warning at 20 miles I felt OK again, and sped up! It was a very similar thing to what happened at Rotterdam last year, then I put it down to the heat, but now i think it is more than that. Very weird. Anyway, will blog it later, its a big PB and a GFA, so am very happy about that! Harlow RC 3:41:48 3:42:59 3:44:59 3:42:59 60.12

Vindicator Longer report to follow, but the story of my 3:30 attempt ends with lots of pain and cramp.
I had a slowish start due to crowding, but soon got in to my stride to catch up the lost time gradually. Cutty Sark came up very quickly and easily. I got a stitch over Tower Bridge as I was getting all emotional (this is the moment that makes the FLM for me) and was swallowing rather than breathing air. An ambition of mine was to get to halfway before the leaders came past on the highway - I almost did it, ~50 metres short! I felt very good here and got to mile 16 feeling I could bang out the 8 minute miles with ease. In Canary Wharf, things started to happen. There were many factors in the downfall. I was having to weave and several people stopped right infront of me. On one occasion this caused a twang in my right hamstring - from then on it felt like it would cramp at amy moment. Legs became stiff, fatigued but fought on at 8:30 pace. Come mile 23/24 my leg felt like it was going to cramp at any second and had to run/walk. In the mall I had a chance of sub 3:40 so forced a sprint, except my hamstring finally gaveway, as did the other. I was on the floor in sight of the finish (and TV cameras) right in the centre of the grandstand area. I was helped up, cound could only manage a shuffle for the last 100m.
