SUPPORT GROWS FOR TORBAY'S TRIATHLON CLUB

The dream of staging a senior triathlon in the Bay may have come closer to reality with the emergence of a fully-fledged club of its own.

The Torbay Triathlon Club even boasts a world champion in Brixham's Helen Parkinson.

Helen, who recently won the world short-course crown in the Czech Republic, will compete in Torbay colours from now on, after several years with Exeter Tri Club.

The Torbay club has been boosted by new sponsorship from Runner's Guide, the H20 Swim Academy and Colin Lewis Cycles.

Triathletes have trained and competed as a section of Torbay Athletic Club in recent years, but Paul Clark explained: "There was a club in the Bay, but it folded because it didn't have the infrastructure and there weren't enough people to keep it going.

"The sport is becoming more popular now, and there are a lot more people interested.

"Torbay is an ideal place to have a triathlon club, especially as it offers open water swimming.

"We would like to get a triathlon event going here.

"We think it would bring competitors and their families to the area, and we have the facilities to do it.

"There has been a young persons' triathlon run under Torbay AC, and we would hope that it would come under our umbrella next year."

Clark stressed that the other established clubs in Devon are backing their new venture.

"Exeter Tri Club are very keen for there to be another club here, and they're actually encouraging people who live south of Teignmouth to join us.

"There's also the North Devon and Plymouth clubs, and we would like four clubs in Devon so we can have competitions within the county."

Torbay already has some quality performers.

In addition to Helen Parkinson, Matt Robinson won the Bath Triathlon and was picked for the world championships, Sam Glasser, 31, finished 13th in his age-group at the London Triathlon and Andrew Sheehy, 42, recently completed the UK Ironman event in Dorset in eleven hours 18 minutes.

But Clark emphasised: "We are not setting up as an elite club.

"Our main aim is to attract new people into the sport.

"We believe that there are a lot of people who would like to do a triathlon, but they are worried about being shown up.

"We want to help them into the sport, and get them into competing and enjoying themselves, rather than being worried about winning medals."

Club members meet for run training with Torbay AC at Torre Valley North on Tuesday and Thursday evenings (6.30pm).

Sea and pool swimming takes place throughout the year, and Colin Lewis Cycles are offering cycling skills sessions for novices and experienced riders through the summer.
