Dad's car was sorted in time for him not to need a lift to the Thursday Club so I came down to the coast for a walk. Tarmac, grassy tracks along the golf course, beach, and up to the dragon where I had a chat with a local woman who was entertaining her grandchildren from Walthamstow. Started off nice, few spots of rain midway, roasting again by the end.
Not a run of quality, but a run. 23degC when I finished, almost still, very sunny. That was enough.

Cleared out and washed the pot that had the cosmos in it in the summer of 2022, found some bulbs that look salvageable, can't remember if I had fancy tulips or daffs in there (it's probably in my training log) but I'll let them dry and plant them in a pot later to give them a chance. Fresh compost and moved the surviving yellow conifer into it along with iris reticulata Pauline round the edges.
Washed out the four empty green troughs (must relocate the scraggly looking but not deceased sempervivens in the other two) and filled three of them with iris reticulata. Had misjudged - they take 24 each, packed in fairly close. Need to buy another 24 each of Clairette, Harmony and Frozen Planet to make a tidy display. And a dozen more Pauline to go into the pot with the yew sprigs. The rain came on towards the end, otherwise I'd have put what I think are the Golden Bells daffs that didn't come up last year and the crocuses into the front lawn. If I can get the gypsophila into the ground in time (it's still flowering mightily) I'll have capacity for lots more tulips. 13th Sep 2023, 5:28pm

Fetchpoint debugging. Bordering on being too windy for the road bike.
![]()
Dry and windy, so I put on a load of washing, accepted a quote for the garden railings, and decided to put my wellies on (because the lawns are sodden) and get a few garden jobs done. Established that we do have a lawn edging tool and I don't need to buy one.
Popped the Golden Bells daffodils that came up blind in containers last year into the side lawn to give them a chance. Went to prune the climbing rose right back now that the garden waste bin has been emptied. Found half a dozen hefty briars coming off the rootstock so I cut it back as far as I could and then dug it out. If I have DOMS tomorrow, that'll be the reason. Cleared out the troughs with the scraggly-looking houseleeks in them (put some of the healthier fragments into small terracotta pots in case they're salvageable) and washed them along with some of the other shallow pots. I'll be able to get the early-flowering bulbs potted up as soon as they arrive. I wonder if the fencing contractors will dig out the lonicera stump when they're here with a digger. 20th Sep 2023, 3:29pm

Removing turf to try to create a border on the lawn side of the front path, and digging out the couch grass and buttercups that had invaded the compost on the previously excavated quarter-circle by the pavement. Couldn't do the whole thing as it would have made the garden waste bin too heavy, and also, it's boring. The soil is (still!) full of flints and would benefit from sieving. Need to go shopping for weedkiller and a weed howker-ooter.

Before going out I'd extracted all the numbers I need for a sub-4 marathon training plan from Hanson, and decided to practise by doing 1.5 mile warm up, 2 x 2 miles at PMP with 0.5 mile recovery, and jog home. I went off the idea very quickly when faced with running into a wall of wind for most of the first two mile effort, and opted for 200dp efforts on the half mile from 1.5 miles. Aimed for at least 6, pleased with 10. They're just about visible on the cadence chart, but pace and heart rate were all over the place due to the wind and the undulations. Intended session for today was a two hour run on slightly tired legs. Don't suspect my coach of moving the goalposts, it was my own Hanson-inspired idea. When I set off my legs felt *so* tired that I thought the Arkleby/Plumbland/Threapland loop might be sufficient, but when I was no longer running uphill and into the wind they livened up and Mile 5, slightly downhill and with a tail wind, was a reminder of what easy running feels like. Last minute decision to do the out and back to Bothel, which committed me to 10 miles, and then Harriston to round it up to 2 hours.
Rained on and off, never enough to get me so wet that the wind couldn't blow-dry me. It wasn't at all cold. The forecast storm arrived when I was half a mile from home. Felt as if I was chafing in a delicate spot around 4 miles in. I NEVER, EVER get chafing. Uncomfortable on and off for the rest of the run but didn't get worse. I think it's just a cold sore, of which we have had a small infestation in the household recently. Front loading the week as I have a half marathon on Sunday. 26th Sep 2023, 1:15pm

Cleared a load of flints from the new front border. Removed most of the bulk of the ferns from the ericaceous part of the raised bed. They've done really well there but the pieris is starting to need more space. Moved the gypsophila from their containers to the other part of the raised bed, along with some crocuses. Was reminded that the reason I created the raised bed was to avoid dealing with sodding bastard flints. Put the surviving daffodil bulbs that had also been in the containers into new pots with the violas to give them a chance rather than composting them. Gave the roses a vicious pruning. Need to decide where to move them to so that the round conifers can go in their pots at the front door. Bit of weeding around the ophiogonus. Also ordered path weedkiller, and Dad's daffodils are on the way so I hope the rest of my bulbs will arrive next week. 29th Sep 2023, 4:51pm

Run marshalling at Keswick. 2.5 miles easy then 25dp efforts with 40dp recoveries (looks like 8, I wasn't counting) to the finish. Stiff legs today 😮

Great Cumbrian Run. Could have been a lot worse!
Gun time 2:14:01, chip time 2:13:18. Really nice conditions for running at a conservative effort level. Would have been warm for racing flat out. But my legs were on strike until 11am. 1st Oct 2023, 12:11pm

Overall verdict, slower than I'd hoped, less slow than I'd feared, nowhere near sub-4 or even sub-4.30 marathon shape, couldn't get much above 70% WHR in the first half but had no difficulty burning my remaining matches in the last two miles.1st Oct 2023, 1:34pm

It's rare that I can log a genuine Recovery Run - less than 24 hours after a key session, less than 40 minutes, WHR under 70%. This was enough running for today. Might do a small bike ride later to get my other Fetchpoint bug.
