STATUS After 2020 - 2022 strange couple of years, missing family and friends but no one was seriously ill, and glad pandemic is over. 2023 had a couple of marathons but calf injury hampered start to 2024. Hoping it improves and wishing all FE all the best :-) G

Started running 07 after a nasty mountain bike accident end of 06 (a week in hospital and a spot of plastic surgery) put me off mountain biking. (See fetcheveryone.com/gallery-showphoto.php?id19442 for gruesome detail!) Decided running on 2 feet couldn't be as dangerous! Edinburgh Marathon 08 was the goal. Joined a club, did some training, got injured, got physio'd and fixed. Did it in 3:42. Pleased with the time. Loved the experience. But most of all I love the feeling of running, the camaraderie of the club and the lovely, lovely land of fetch. You are all wonderful! heart Update: Fetch Festive Calendar wanted an update. Errr, I'm not a parsnip. There you go.

What’s the best bit of advice that you would give to new runners, bikers and swimmers? Slow down! Seriously, even if your goal is to get quicker, start slower. You can build up volume and speed more effectively if you don't get injured all the time. Build up gradually. Take breaks. But do build. And believe! Great times await! :-) |

A wee run after parkrun. Thought it was a road. It wasn't! Muddy, rocky trail, but good views! G

Well that was good! Kirkcaldy parkrun at Beveridge Park. My normal trainers, trail, are all wet because I've been leaving them outside (wet shoes drying indoors being deemed a health hazard by she who must be obeyed!), so I was wearing the super shoes, and had to find somewhere that was tarmac only! It's a lovely park, 20 mins from my house (only 5 mins more than my most local!) and I planned to do a bit before and after to top up the miles. Got chatting to people on the way round, one Kirkcaldy Wizard, Michael, was lovely, so we chatted to the finish and a fist bump! Bit quicker than he meant to and a bit slower than I was going to, so probably perfect! Lovely and mild 15C, rising to 17 or 18C later. Great to chat to Andrew, who is now a regional promoter, managing the local co-ordinators, before, after and in golf club with coffee and traybake.
Headed up to see mum after, 20 mins up the road. She was in great shape, bright, if slow and wheezy as always and easily tired. Would she like to try a walk with the rollator to a cafe in her village that I had seen? She started with no, my sister and niece were visiting. I said I could just text them where we were. Then she agreed. A slow walk, the longer route, with less of an incline. Lovely cafe (The Curator), good coffee, cake and some bits of art and nick nacks to look at. Met a German lady and her son. Then back home, a few chores for mum, and home. Great Saturday so far! Off to Forfar Loch tomorrow to look at a boat to maybe (very maybe!) buy. Hope to meet Angus Clydesdale if he is available. Well that was rather fabby. Things moving quickly on sailing front! And a lovely meet up with Angus Clydesdale. More on that below.
On sailing thread Synge and AC had been advising me on boat types I could consider for purchase. AC asked if I had considered a Wanderer. I did a search (Apollo Duck is a common dinghy sale site) and first one that popped up was in... Angus! Forfar Loch to be specific. It was a loch I wanted to visit anyway with my paddleboard, and it has a sailing club! So I contacted the seller and arranged to visit. I wasn't really thinking of buying until next year, so felt a bit of a fraud. But I said openly that I was just looking and the seller seemed happy. He was incredibly helpful, showed me the ropes, and then when I said I would take a club boat out in their race, he said why not take the Wanderer out. And he didn't seem to mind sacrificing racing his own boat. So we did. Was great to be out on the water. It was a bit blowy, maybe 3 gusting 4, with squally showers so quite variable. But lovely in the sun, and when the wind was steady. Loved the wee boat, and it handled fine and was very stable, and I felt had plenty of room. Not racy - think Ford Mondeo rather than Ferrari! Which is fine for me. It was tricky getting in and out of water, which is a big consideration for me, as I will often want to do that alone, for my use case. I'm going to check what else of similar size might be lighter weight, but I don't think there is much. Missus said just to go for it (but she always says that about spending money. I think it's to offset her guilt on massive spending on horses!!) Decision required! At dentist 16.45 out 17.30ish so rush hour. Decided to try local paddle on canal not drive home. Nearest was Sighthill but bit dodgy so went to Ratho instead! Lovely. Had been a nice day 20C but wind picking up so cooling in evening but still lovely. I have perfected a stroke that keeps me straight. C shaped? Pull towards bow, drive down board then twist to j stroke to complete. Need to be strugt on canal or swap every few strokes. Only problem was weeds! I had to clear them a couple of times as I ground to a halt! But other than that, beautiful. Chat to a couple runners and cyclists. At end a um and son on boards, waving to people in gardens and pub! Goodshoulder and corr workout too! G

3 hours of paddleboarding assisting instructor. First session, I started a bit late (was meant to be 10.30 I thought, and knew it would be tight after parkrun but they were already out on water.) Two teens and an adult, they had fun. Second session was mum and teen, aunt and another adult. Then third was family, 8 yr old, teen and mum and dad. All had fun I think! I did. Fell in twice (first time in 2.5 years of doing it! Once chatting to one of the ladies in the group and once trying to get out at island. No problem. Getting back on easy enough! Good thing I wore my wetsuit that day. Very tired at end of day. Helped to put away a couple of the boards as well as my own. Helped someone else pump up a board. My inner chamber might be losing pressure too, not sure. Hope when I get into sailing I can manage a full day! G

Inflate paddleboard. Used my own even though Och Aye Canoe had 4 of the Red brand boards out. So did the instructor though, so all good. Quite fancied trying one of theirs seeing if it felt any different. G

First cross country of winter 24/25 season. East District relays - bit of a mess with entries, partly my fault. We needed 4 men for a team and 3 women. We had 7 men and 5 women! So not quite two of each team. Eventually we had 6 women but still only 7 men. The technique is to guess the teams from the interest, but add whole club to each team, so if someone comes in later you can sub them in. I hadn't done that. Others at club sorted it. Then for declarations (actual names which you can do right up to the day / time of the race) I put names against women's A team, which was seniors, who were Masters and vice versa. Didn't think it mattered. But turns out the Masters women were eyeing a prize winning spot. And they got 3rd. So just before race they were swapping numbers. To be fair I heard many clubs had problems with entries. For instance we had one eligible runner who didn't show in the declarations. Anyway the guy at declarations said contact Scottish Athletics and they can fix it after. Hope so. That's Monday's faff! Women's Masters 3rd which was fab. Men's fast team was unfortunately not all masters. Enjoyed my run. Felt OK in parts and don't think I was the slowest! G
