I can eat fifty eggs

9:47am, 28 Mar 2024
After yesterday's terrible news, I wanted to give you all a little smile - so I've organised an Easter Egg Hunt on Fetchpoint:

fetcheveryone.com/game-fetchpoint.php

I have started scattering Easter Eggs all over the map, and will add more over the coming days. The person who collects the most by the end of Easter Monday will be crowned our 2024 Fetchpoint Eggspert and will win a prestigious badge. Depending on how much interest you folks show, I might add a few more badges for collecting over a certain number of eggs.

You should see a new tab in the game header, titled 'Egg Hunt!', which will take you to the leaderboard.

If you're already a regular player, you should be egged up already. If you haven't played in a while, it's best if you leave the game (on the game 'Settings' tab) and rejoin. This will egg you up good.

To snaffle an egg, you just need to run, walk, bike or swim within 80 metres of an egg's location. If you click an egg on the map, you can see its 'hit radius'. Just to keep it simple, the eggs themselves are not worth any Fetchpoint points.

I hope it's bug-free, but let me know if you hit any problems.

Happy hunting,
Cool Hand Fetch

Oscar the Grouch :-(

1:44pm, 27 Mar 2024
Unfortunately I have more truly awful news.

It's just been reported to me that Oscar the Grouch, aka Scott Weetch has passed away. The announcement was spotted by Big_G on the Dartmoor Discovery Facebook page. It reads:

"I'm afraid I have some devastating news; Scott Weetch has sadly passed away, having suffered a cardiac arrest. Scott will be familiar to many of you who have run the DD. He loved the race with a passion, having completed it many times over the years.

I was only chatting to him about it at the Abingdon Marathon at the back end of last year, he was his usual witty self, and was looking forward to taking part again this year.

My thoughts are with his wife, Emma and their children, all his friends and fellow club mates at Running Forever RC. A great club, who like all of us at the DD are going to miss him and that magical smile.

RIP my friend ♥️"

He'd been with us on Fetch since 2005 according to his training log, and I'd regularly see him pop up on the cricket thread amongst others. He was logged in to Fetch as recently as Friday evening, and although he'd been reporting hamstring problems, he was running well, and seemed to be in a good place, with events planned and a new job. It's a terrible shock.

If a Fetch fails in a forest...

10:30am, 27 Mar 2024
I've been looking around for an event to aim at as a stepping stone for EfM. And yesterday I found one. It's the 'Greensand Country Ultra' at the end of May:

fetcheveryone.com/races/greensand-country-ultra-9460644

After double-checking the sanity and practicality of my thoughts with the beautiful and fragrant KatieB, I've taken the plunge and thrown my name in the hat.

I'd thought about keeping that under *my* hat, because I really have no clue how I'll get on. But there's never much room in my hats anyway. The distance is a huge unknown, and it's 99% off-road, which is not typically my thing. So I thought about doing it on the quiet, and if it goes badly, I could sneak off into the woods mid-route to make a new life in a mud hut among the squirrels and birds. If a Fetch fails in a forest, and no-one is there to hear it, does he make a sound? Yes, probably. Some variant of "my frigging legs hurt" I expect.

But then I thought no. Sod it. A happy ending or glorious failure. And better to fail at something than not give it a go. Except maybe skydiving or DIY surgery. So I'm pinning my optimism and idiocy to the mast today. I hope it inspires you to give something a go too, whatever that may be. Even if it's learning to speak squirrel.

You may occasionally receive a once-a-week 'Notifications' email. The idea behind it is to remind the folks who haven't logged in for a while that they might have fmails or notifications waiting for them.

It's an opt-in thing, which you can control via Your Profile > Account Settings > Email Consent, which takes you here:

fetcheveryone.com/user-settings-email.php

Anyway... I thought I could make it a more useful thing, by including a summary of your training week. My hope here is that it will encourage the folks who sign up, connect a Garmin, and then bugger off. Knowing that your training data is being turned into pretty things might encourage some of them to come for a look.

I've sent a test email to a few dozen Fetchies, so you might have an email titled 'Fetcheveryone: Your Training Week' in your email inbox right now. Before unleashing it on thousands of inboxes, I wanted to be sure that it's (a) largely error-free; (b) looks ok in popular email clients; and (c) is a somewhat useful thing.

If you'd like to see what it looks like for your data, have a look here:

fetcheveryone.com/weeklyupdate.php

And if you'd like this on a weekly basis, make sure you tick the relevant email consent box (the third one down, on that first link up above) and press 'Save'.

  • Great idea 👍

I can read it ok and the data all looks correct. The layout isn’t great though; it’s very narrow as viewed on my mobile. Maybe it would be different as an email.

I like the content overall too, especially the little bit at the end with the games :-) For me personally, the walking breakdown is overkill and I’d rather see my running ahead of my walking.

But mostly works and a great idea as I said!

One tiny thing - the email is showing in miles currently (or mine is). Is that because I flipped to miles briefly this afternoon to look at something, or will it always be in miles rather than the units set on your log? (The weeklyupdate link above shows km)

Thanks for chaning the logic for the order of running v walking. I suppose a further iteration could make it conditional on something like time spent on the activity; basically, order by what we guess the user is most interested in. But as it is now works well as it is for me.

Lasting Power of Suspicion

10:40am, 19 Mar 2024
Yesterday we took 90 minutes out to talk online to a man from the Co-op about our wills. We haven't had one up until this point, and whilst we could have filled in a template, we wanted to know we'd done an airtight job. All fairly simple stuff - whatever we've got when we've both died in a skydiving accident celebrating our 60th wedding anniversary goes to our kids. That sort of thing.

As part of our 'estate planning' (sounds grand, don't it?), we were also asked to consider granting Lasting Power of Attorney to each other. You probably know about this already, but it basically means that if either of us suddenly becomes mentally infirm, the other can make decisions regarding healthcare and financial stuff without being shut out of frozen accounts or given the cold shoulder by insurance companies, medical people etc. The salesperson had a good line in apocalyptic predictions of our future health, and the difficulties it would leave for the non-stricken partner. The fact that one in two people get cancer at some point in their lives was somehow crowbarred in as a reason to protect against mental instability. Oh my, we should definitely panic about this immediately!

But all was ok. There was a perfect solution for us.

The Co-op had negotiated a great price to arrange this for us. As a couple, we'd pay £1188 plus (and this is where he adopted a somewhat conspiratorial tone, letting us in on the tricksy money-grabbing 'courts' that decide these things) each of the four forms would cost £82 to process. This additional cost was nothing to do with the Co-op - he was very clear about that. Totally out of their hands. He was right about that part.

We said we'd think about it.

It's a lot of money - enough to get us a lovely week away in a cottage somewhere with cash left over for ice creams. But it plays on your mind - the idea of your partner left in distress whilst you are left incapable. We all probably know various people who have at some point lost the ability to care for themselves. I can think of at least a few Fetchies dealing with that right now. It's a sad situation, and it's presented to you starkly in 4K. The way that these things are sold, and the techniques that the salespeople (sorry, 'advisors') use are frankly fascinating. I don't mean that in an especially good way. We are steered gently past logic to emotion. Some would call it exploitative, but it's the world we live in.

I got back to my desk and did some googling. "Are LPA's a good idea?", "What proportion of people have LPA's?", "How much is an LPA?", etc. And then I stumbled upon this:

gov.uk

Wait, what the fudge? But no. Surely I can't just do it myself. So I filled the form in, one page at a time, expecting to come across questions so fiendishly couched in legalese that the act itself would render me incompetent in some Kafkaesque irony. What's your name? I know this one. Your address, and date of birth? All still well within my wheelhouse. And who do you want to make decisions should you become incapacitated? I know this one too. In fact, I'm glowing with pride at my ability. No doubt there's a killer punch coming soon. And there is. It's titled 'Pay now'. Our sweet-talking advisor and new best mate has just taken one straight to the solar plexus, and is out cold.

It's exactly £82 to fill in the forms yourself. You still have to do it four times (once for each person - once for health; once for financials). You can spend the other £1188 on a nice week away in a cottage, which should also go some way towards bolstering mental fortitude, or if not, will just help you focus on enjoying the here and now.

The bird feeder is about 6ft away from my office window. This morning I saw two greenfinches sit for a minute and scoff some sunflower hearts. Apparently they were nearly put on the endangered list a few years ago, but they're making a bit of a comeback. Lovely.

Or, if I already had investments in a discretionary management scheme before I lost capacity to make financial decisions, I want the scheme to continue. • It absolutely is a Very Good Idea to set up LPAs - thank heavens my Dad had sorted this out years before he went completely doolally with Alzheimers, it made it so much easier to deal with his affairs once he was no longer able to do it himself. We set it up via his solicitor, but I don't remember it costing anywhere near that much - Dad paid for it so I'm not sure of the exact cost. I must do this for myself, and set my boys up as attorneys - thanks for the link. Incidentally, not entirely unrelated, but I handled the probate for my Dad's estate, saving myself and my brother a shedload of money. It was not quite as straightforward as I had anticipated, as his estate was on the cusp of incurring inheritance tax, but I managed to work out that we weren't liable because Dad hadn't used any of Mum's tax allowance on the estate when she died. Trying to deal with it all during Covid lockdown was, however, a complete nightmare .....

  • Blimey - by 4 paragraphs in I was bouncing up and down on my seat shouting at the screen "No! LPA is easy! Do it yourself!" Glad you realised before handing over any money. Charging that amount is an absolute scam. Worth noting that if you DON'T have an LPA in place and you (or the person you're acting on behalf of) lose mental capacity, then you can't then set it up and you have to go to the Office of the Public Guardian - which is way more complex, and realistically does need solicitors, and cost me about £3k when I had to do it for both of my parents. So, yes, LPA, just get it done, everyone!

Fetch Virtual Challenge 2024 bunting

12:13pm, 18 Mar 2024
Ok folks, you can now sign up, and get your first look at the routes before we kick off at the end of this month:

fetcheveryone.com/fetchvirtualchallenge2024.php

Some useful changes
This year I've embedded the StreetView into the page itself, because I think it's a nice feature so let's make it as easy as possible to find out where you land after every excursion. And I've added a very obvious 'FIND' button next to each person on the leaderboard, so you can go see what your friends are looking at. You can also click the checkpoints to see the view at each one (although it's pretty tricky to make sure that they correspond exactly to the best view, AND also pointing in the right direction!) Don't forget that you can drag the StreetView image around, to give you a 360 view.

The Run/Walk Route
The run/walk route this year has been designed by McGoohan as tribute to Swittle. It begins in Margate near 'Another Time', an Anthony Gormley sculpture. Then it takes in a variety of other Gormley sculptures, and a series of places that were of importance to our pal. It ends with a little section of the Sefton Coastal Path, overlooking his beloved iron men. McG will give you some more detail on that in a blog at some point between now and kick off.

The Swim Route
Sushi has designed this year's swim route. It starts at the northern tip of Loch Ness, and takes you along its length, then through Loch Lochy (presumably named by the same voting process that gave you Boaty McBoatface and Brexit) and along the Caledonian Canal to Torcastle and Fort William. The StreetView might be a bit challenging for swimmers, but I've had a look at the checkpoints, and you do get to put your heads above water occasionally :-)

The Bike Route
And I've pulled together a route for the cyclists. After travelling down the west coast of the USA last year, I thought we'd tackle India this year. The StreetView images are fascinating, starting on a busy street-cum-marketplace near the Hooghly River in Kolkata. It then flirts with the coast, travelling through Visakhapatnam, Chennai and a host of towns and cities I have never/barely heard of (but sounded nice). And you just keep going until you run out of land, reaching Kanyakumari on the southern-most tip of the country.

Look for Notes
As you make your way along the routes, look out for little yellow triangles symbolising notes that have been left by other travellers. You can click these to read them; and you can click any point along the route to leave a note for others.

When do we start and finish?
The challenges begin (as usual) on the day the clocks go forward - and this year that's March 31st (which is also Easter Sunday). There's a heap of badges to collect (which I really must finish making!) and as always, if you can't complete the challenges by the end (when the clocks go back on October 27th), I will leave the page open for you to track your progress. We still have various people completing last year's challenge, and even the year before that, and even a couple of people still looking at the year before that! So no worries, do your thing and have fun :-)

Swittle's Funeral

5:23pm, 12 Mar 2024
I've had confirmation that Swittle's funeral will be held on the 5th April at 1.30pm. It's at the Thornton Garden of Rest, Lydiate Ln, Thornton, Liverpool L23 1TP. His friend Oss says: "The family aren’t planning a wake, but they’re happy if members of Fetch want to arrange a get together afterwards. I think his sister and family want to have a quiet time afterwards with a few close friends of Steve."

I am planning to attend the funeral. They've asked if I can get an idea of how many Fetchies may attend, so that they can print the correct number of order of services etc. I've done a simple poll so that you can indicate your choice:

I've posted this on the 'RIP Swittle' thread, and will fmail everyone who offered to donate towards the bench (NB when I am there, I plan to go look at the benches, and hopefully pick one).

Cadence

5:01pm, 11 Mar 2024
Today I've been working on the 'cadence analysis' page.

Here's how it used to look:

Some half-assed graphs that were too short to really show a trend; and some tables of data. And it would just show you one month at a time.

I'd noticed recently that my cadence appears to have increased a bit. Taking some very rough averages, my cadence in 2023 was 167.2; whereas so far in 2024 I'm averaging 169.2. So I wanted to update this tool (which wasn't getting much traffic) to see if I could make it show me some inspiring stuff.

Here's a screenshot of how it looks for me now:

Firstly, there's a proper graph there now. And it covers the last twelve months, not just one month. And it's taller, so it's easier visually to see some trends.

The grey columns on the graph show my mileage at each cadence during the last year. You can see the peak at 168 strides/min, and a drop off on either side. The green columns show the same data, but using the last 90 days only. Fewer miles than in a whole year, obviously, but noticeably shifted towards the right i.e. higher cadences.

And the red line shows why this is a cool thing. It shows my pace at each cadence. For me there's a pretty clear relationship between cadence and pace - so an increase in cadence = WIN :-) The purple line shows stride length - and this mirrors my pace. It's kind of weird to think of it, but when my legs go round faster, they also propel me further with each stride!

At either extreme of the graph, the red and purple lines get a bit wobbly. This is because I haven't done much running at these low/high cadences, so the averages have not had a chance to smooth out. Initially, I thought about excluding cadences where training volume is low - but instead I've enabled zoom on the graph. I'm still figuring out how to make zooming work on mobile, sorry - but if you're on a desktop, you can just click and drag your mouse on the graph to highlight the portion you're interested in (like in the pic), and it'll zoom in to show you just that bit.

Have a play, and see how you get on:

I think I need to shorten my stride (might help avoid injury) in increments while trying not to lose too much off the pace.

Even better - be able to display them side by side - but accept it might be hard to fit it all in meaningfully if you did that.

Down to my last pen

12:51pm, 7 Mar 2024
I've just looked it up. I bought my pack of Pilot V7 pens some time around January 2021. I know this because I blogged about fancying a set. It was a four pack, with black, blue, red and green.

I first explored the joys of coloured pens when I used to do the scorebook for the local cricket team in South Wales. I started doing it when I was about 10. My parents would often be working most of the time on Saturdays, so I ended up hanging out at the cricket club from about midday through to whenever they'd come and pick me up in the evening. I got free cricket teas (which was great when we played at home, because I knew what we'd get; and a bit of a lottery when playing away - I had a short list of 'salad clubs' that I would dread visiting), and got quite good at pool.

A cricket scorebook can be relatively simple, or incredibly intricate. Here's an example that I found online:

preview.redd.it

The different colours in this example represent the different bowlers, so you get an idea of which batters scored their runs off which bowlers. Cricket is an endless bucket of statistics heart :-) So you can see why I like having various coloured pens to work with. If I'm doing little sketches of graphs, page layouts etc, I like using different colours to denote certain things.

Anyway... I started off with four, and now I'm down to one.

Black - this one got used first. Sadly it got lost somewhere. I still think of it at times. #gonetoosoon

Blue - this became my primary choice when the black one went awol. It did its work faithfully until it finally ran out of ink midway through last year.

Red - teacher's choice! This gave me many months of useful service, but today I consigned it to the bin, having noticed a disturbing tendency for it to bleed all over my fingers.

Green - the last great hope. The Ian Lavender of my Pen Army. But following a comedy sketch I saw a few years ago, I also associate green text with people who write unhinged letters of complaint - so it's going to be an interesting few months.

Why don't I just buy a new set? Well it's £8.65 that can stay in the Fetcheveryone pot until I absolutely need it - I totally mean it when I say I try to keep my costs as low as possible. And I want to see this thing through to the end. Greeny deserves that - it's sat with all its siblings for three years waiting for its chance. I can't let Greeny down. Plus I have letters to write.

Anyway said person once told me to "f**k off" in a meeting which was normal then and I duly did because he was very senior and I very junior. A bench for swittle

10:21am, 4 Mar 2024
I've been speaking to Sefton Council about having a memorial bench for swittle. Our first idea was to have something overlooking his beloved Anthony Gormley sculptures on Crosby Beach - but the council have stopped taking applications for this area because it's massively popular.

I asked if there were any other areas where a donation to restore a bench would be welcome, and they suggested Seafront Gardens, which is just in front of Marine Terrace. Roughly here: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Marine+Terrace,+Waterloo,+Liverpool/@53.472354,-3.0310938

The cost of restoring an old bench and adding a plaque is a one-off payment of £200. Here's an example of the benches in the gardens:

I looked at his last few runs, and they all start and end at the north end of the gardens. Sometimes he would head north along the shore to the sculptures; and at other times he would go around Crosby Marine Lake - so this feels like a nice place that he would have visited pretty regularly I guess.

I've done a poll to see what folks think about all this, and to figure out how much we'd need to contribute to cover the cost. So if you'd like to contribute, please tick the appropriate box and I'll work it out and get in touch with you all:

I hope the weather is with you today.

  • I was thinking of a statue in the style of Gormley but recognisably swittle and with a descriptive plaque of his attributes and personality. However, that would be horrendously expensive, even beyond the generosity of Fetchies, so a bench is definitely a good alternative.

  • I'm an old friend of Swittle - from the age of 5 yrs, and in regular contact with him over those many years. I apparantly introduced him to running in 1983. He was deeply impressed when I came back from a 10 mile run and was still able to talk. Soon after, we went to a running shop in Camden to buy some shoes and he never looked back. We shared many thoughts about running and music, and partook of quite a few runs together, although he was in Liverpool, and I'm in Suffolk.

I would like to thank all you Fetchies for your kindness and concern for him - and particularly Fetch for reporting his non-appearance to the police. It's a demonstration of a proper and healthy community. I'm sure Swittle's sister will be happy for this proposal to go ahead - I certainly am.
