New home and away shirts and vests

3:28pm, 28 Oct 2021
With the Avoid Everyone and Rainbow kit, it's been a while since I've put together a batch of conventional Fetch kit. I've made some slight adjustments to the design to try to make them a bit fancier looking. It's not very obvious on the shrunk-down images below, but there's a faint hexagon pattern on these, and there's a dark-light-dark colour gradient from the top to the bottom of the shirt. The vests aren't shown, but would look very similar. As always, it'll be a V neck on the ladies shirts (again, not shown).

These will be manufactured by Ron Hill Specials again, so there'll be a little Ron Hill diamond logo on the blank breast. They have also said that they can offer me a four week turnaround, so I think that if I can get an order in by (say) November 5th, then they should be with me by December 3rd, which gives me time to get them out to you in plenty of time for Christmas.

Leave me a comment to let me know what you think. If you're all kitted out, it might steer me towards waiting a while before doing these - but if you're all mad for it, then let's crack on. Thanks :-)

Benchmark league - a few more updates

1:23pm, 28 Oct 2021
I've made some amendments to the benchmark league table:

1) if you are a little way down the table, you don't have to scroll any more. Your performance appears at the very top, showing you your position and the percentile you are in.

2) gold, silver and bronze are lovely and shiny.

3) if the table has at least 20 rows, there are row separators to mark the 90th, 80th, 80th etc percentiles to give you targets on your way to the top.

4) I've added filters to let you trim the results by age and gender.

5) I've been keeping a regular eye on the tops of the tables for accidental car journeys etc. I only really need to look at the 400 metre table, because (a) most people realise when the mile split beeps start racking up, and (b) once a bad entry is reported, it's pulled from all the tables until the owner puts it right.

6) I've added the table as a sub-menu option in the Leagues section of the site.

Benchmark league table

5:32pm, 25 Oct 2021
I've been amending the benchmarks league table today. It's the one that lets you compare your recent best benchmarks with those of others. Kind of like an ever-present race at every distance.

fetcheveryone.com/league-weekly.php

I've added several new features to it:

1) it now includes biking benchmarks
2) it now includes longer benchmarks - from 50k up to 200k. I am backfilling these from the training log, and most of October is now indexed. It'll be a couple of days before older stuff shows up on your benchmarks page, but the recent stuff should all be there.
3) there's a 'Query' button. If you find a car journey, or something weird, you can click the button. That comes through to me, and if I agree that it needs sorting, I press another button which removes it from the table and notifies the user. The offending entry is moved to Cross Training until the user has adjusted it, so if they are AFK, it doesn't matter.

Have fun with it.

  • Thanks for that - Looks good & nice to see the walking/cycling too. Looks like my data needs more of a datacleanse than I realised!! One small point (and this might be because of the data still populating) but in my 20 mile bike benchmark I only have one ride but in the marathon and longer distances there are plenty of others?

Hill areas

10:03am, 22 Oct 2021
Yesterday I found a new hill that felt like the toughest one I've ever cycled up.

Here's my training entry:

fetcheveryone.com/t-19804171

It's the bit just after the 8mi/13km marker. Looking at my splits broken down into 100m chunks, I went as slow as 6 miles an hour at one point :-) I could almost have got off and ran up quicker, but I'm still not feeling able to run at the moment.

By my reckoning, it's a gain of about 55 metres over the course of 1.2 miles. That's an average gradient of about 2.8% I think, which doesn't sound horrendous, but maybe it was the length of time it went on for.

Perhaps I was already a bit tired. I've biked 172 miles since Sep 29th, which is easily more than any previous dalliance with cycling (certainly in the last 10 years). By and large I've enjoyed it. I've even mentioned to Katie that I am tempted by the idea of a sportive or point to point.

I'd already encountered some hills (Kirk Hallam was deeply unpleasant), uneven roads (miles 2 and 3 were like riding over solidified lava), a few over-familiar lorries, a U turn when I went the wrong way, and a swine of a head wind. So much that I'd say the first six miles of this ride were a pretty awful experience.

Luckily I'd cheered up a bit, after cycling past a nice old windmill, and getting my legs back under me whilst coasting down Cat and Fiddle Lane [I love odd names like that. My favourite is probably Betty Haunt Lane on the Isle of Wight.], and finding some smoother, quieter roads to ride on. The village of Stanley had a nice looking house for sale with views over the fields - and my mind was starting to wander to nicer things.

Then the hill. There's not much to tell really. Slug it up to the top. Try not to lose all momentum. Try to make it clear to road users coming the other way that you've not lost the plot. Try and remember the plot. Check again to see if there's another easier gear you can switch to. Try and figure out how you'll ever get your bike up to cruising speed even after the road has flattened out. Make mental notes to (a) tackle this again and do a bit better, but also (b) never come this way again.

Garmin gives me a 1.53 mile 'segment'* around this bit, so it's obviously something that more regular cyclists like to tackle. The fastest person appears to have completed that 1.53 miles in 2m48s (that's nearly 33mph - surely that can't be right?), but then the whole rest of the top 20 are between 4m57s and 5m15s, so I guess that's achievable. It gave me 9m18s :-)

* I wonder if I should expand Fetch Miles to make them any distance. We could call them chunks. "I'm just off to blow some chunks" you'd say.

One more wrong turn (I should have turned left at about 9.5 miles to have a nosey at Locko Park), and then it was relatively plain sailing the rest of the way.

There are always bigger hills. And each one makes the smaller ones just that little bit easier.

  • "There are always bigger hills. And each one makes the smaller ones just that little bit easier."

And doing them more often makes them easier still ...
(as does doing them earlier in the ride, without lots of miles already taken out of legs and lungs)

And a philiosphical thought: Why do hills get steeper as you get closer to the top?

Any hill can be hard. Just depends on how fast you try to go up them. Have to agree that 33mph does seem a bit quick. Wasn't Julian Alaphilippe, was it?
It's right that the hills do get a bit easier the more that you do them, and the added bonus is that cycling uphill uses a lot of the same muscles as running uphill does. Win win..

'b'uffs then

12:11pm, 20 Oct 2021
With thanks to Old Croc, I can now refer to our necktubes as buffs. Just no capital B's, because that's the brand name. But 'buff' is fine. I just wanted to clarify, because a whole bunch of commenters have asked me what the difference is. And there's none really.

Anway, here are the two designs that I will go with - and my plan is to buy 100 of each. I've amended design 1 to make the Fetch logo a bit bigger, but it's my hope that the colours are enough to identify you to other Fetchies.

And here's design 2, which is a wee bit more understated (if you can call something that has every colour of the rainbow in it 'understated').

I'll be selling these for £8 each (inc. p&p), and will set up a preorder for those that don't want to miss out. All being well, there's a 3-5 week delivery time, which means that if I order later on today, they should be with me between 10th-24th November, for immediate dispatching to you.

If you're interested in either (or neither!), please update your vote on the poll, and I can contact all the positives and maybes as soon as I've got the pre-order ready. Thanks!

Buffs (well, neck tubes)

4:05pm, 19 Oct 2021
At some point over the last year or two, Buff UK appear to have disappeared. I have just contacted them via their main site (they are in Barcelona) to see if they still ship to the UK (and if so, just how much extra it costs since f**king Brexit). I am not especially hopeful.

But... I have another potential supplier, and because what they supply aren't Buffs (let's call them neck tubes, bandanas, or lightweight head supports), the price is a bit more reasonable. I sold the Buffs at £15 each, but I was thinking that I could sell these for £8.

My plan is to produce a new design using Fetch colours. I'd aim to order a batch within the next week, and they should be with me for dispatch by early December.

To proceed, I need to get an idea of how many of you might be interested at £8 a shot (which would include p&p). So here's a poll:

Thanks!

PS Those of you who are waiting on your rainbow kit, that should be arriving with me this Friday, and I'll get it out same day if I can.

PPS For the inevitable question about cycling jerseys, I've asked if RHS can include a sample with my order, so I can make a call on whether to order some of those. Probs more traditional Fetch colours.

PPPS Does anyone know where I might be able to source about 50 units of bespoke handlebar tape?

Report dodgy GPS stuff

3:27pm, 18 Oct 2021
Every so often, I am asked to sort out a training entry where the owner has forgotten to press stop before getting in their car and driving off. It messes up the benchmarks, it messes up Conquercise, it messes up league tables... lots.

You lot are always awesome at helping keep the site the right way up. This feels like an ideal opportunity to turn a big task into a hundred little ones.

On any training entry, there's a new link at the very bottom, where you can report a training entry where you think this has happened.

Will someone be angry with me?
It's anonymous. I'm the only person who knows who has reported a training entry. So no worries about anyone gammoning up at you :-) Obviously, if you spam the link for lots of undeserving training entries, I reserve the right to go a bit pink.

What happens if I report a training entry?
I get a notification each time there's a report. If I agree with the report, my plan* is to have a special admin button that will recategorise the training entry as something like "Error - GPS", and trigger an fmail to the relevant user. The fmail will explain how to trim dodgy bits off your GPS trace, so that hopefully the person can put it right. And by recategorising it, that should hopefully remove it from the majority of places where it might cause problems, so if the user takes six months to see the message, it won't matter too much.

There are occasions when you can't see someone's training - if they've chosen not to share it. But in that case, let me know via feedback, and I can kick off the process.

*haven't built this bit yet :-) But for now, having an easy way for you to report this stuff is a good start.

The benchmark system looks out for any sudden Bolt-like leaps in your GPS trace, to avoid giving you unexpectedly fast times. An apology for people who follow my training

4:23pm, 14 Oct 2021
Over the next week or so, I have some work to do to get Fetch ready for a Garmin update. They're changing the way they distribute new training data to Fetch and other sites.

If you're interested in the mechanics: instead of broadcasting the data directly to Fetch, they just send a notification to say that there's new data available, and in turn I send a request to grab it.

And if you prefer an analogy, the old system involves me delivering your breakfast to you in bed, but you might be asleep or out. With the new system, I just yell up the stairs and you come get it yourself - and it's your stupid fault if it's cold by the time you get it. But don't worry - I keep yelling until you do *something* about it - but then it's up to you.

So I will be doing some testing, whereby I generate some nonsense training with my Garmin, so I can make sure the process works well.

This shouldn't affect any of your own training - that'll all still come via the existing method until I've got the new method working well.

But if you are one of the people who follow my training, you might get more notifications than usual - I apologise if that gets annoying. You could unfollow me until I'm done, I guess.

Just letting you know.

Aside: one of the snippets of info I've picked up could prove useful. When Garmin send a notification of a new piece of training, there's a new 'flag' that says if it's automatically imported or manually added. I don't know for sure, but this *might* offer a route to grab data that you've managed to send to Garmin from other sites like Zwift, or from watch manufacturers that don't return my calls, like COROS. Maybe. Not a guarantee!

New cycling and swimming badges

9:36am, 13 Oct 2021
For those of you confused by a sudden influx of cycling and swimming badges...

I've added 30 new biking badges and 20 new swimming badges for overall distance. Even if you've not done either recently, when the site checks your eligibility for new badges, it will give you any that you're owing for training banked in the past.

Ta :-)

New Conquercise Feature: Grids

4:46pm, 12 Oct 2021
If you play Conquercise (and why wouldn't you? It's epic!), there's a new score box at the top of the page, giving you a Grid score.

Have a look at this picture:

The pink rectangle is my level 1 grid - all eight of the zones that surround my home zone. I have explored all of these within the last 12 months, so I get a tick in the box as a level 1 grid person.

The cyan rectangle is my level 2 grid - but in order to be a level 2 grid person, I need to maintain my level 1 zones, and go visit those two zones that I've marked with cyan dots.

The further out you go, the more zones you have to visit.

Level 1 = 9 zones (home zone + 8 surrounding)
Level 2 = 25 zones (all the level 1 zones + 16 surrounding)
Level 3 = 49 zones (all the level 2 zones + the 24 surrounding)
etc.

It's a bit unfortunate for you folks who live by the sea or on desert islands - but hey, you live by the sea, you're already living the dream, and swimming counts! And if you live near some sort of restricted Area 51 type place, you might find you hit a ceiling - but hey, if you live that close, you're probably more concerned about anal probes and abductions and the like.

I might do some badges for each level :-) And I'm interested to know how big your grid score gets. One of our leading players is only a level 1 :-O

Sprouting a tiny biking antler :-)

1:49pm, 8 Oct 2021
I promise I'll stop talking about the new gradient graph soon - but I just got a little bit excited when I uploaded my latest ride (just an hour, but Derbyshire, not Bedfordshire) and discovered that I've done enough to earn my +3 column:

The lower graph is my latest one, complete with the extra column. I know I'm just a noob, but it feels like I've sprouted a tiny antler. Except... that's not the best metaphor really, as I don't feel like I want to be the head moose or anything like that. At least it's two wheels away from Clarksontalk.

The gradient antlers has given me an idea for a set of badges :-)

I've ordered a book called Bicycling Magazine's 1100 Best All-time Tips second hand: amzn.to - I vetoed other options that had sections on 'how to avoid fashion errors'. I think I would need more than a section, for a start.

I went past this sign the other day. Anyone?

Struggling with my big ring

5:35pm, 5 Oct 2021
I am still swearing when I go up hills, but thanks to something I found in the forum a couple of days ago, I *think* I've got my technique just a little bit better.

It's this thread:

fetcheveryone.com/forum/changing-gears-correctly-51284/1

and it's all about how best to use your gears when approaching a hill. It's from 2012 too - so I only found it thanks to the work of the legendary thread tagging team :-)

If you CBA to go read it, the basic lesson appears to be this. Regular cyclists - please forgive me if my terminology is crunchier than my gear changes :-)

Newbie cyclists can often struggle up a hill on their 'big ring'*, moving down through the gears on the back wheel until they need to switch down the front gear too for a bit of help. The clanking loss of momentum and the sudden spinning feet is not easy to take, and the forces involved can also result in your chain coming off. The answer is to anticipate the hill; get onto your smaller ring sooner; and change *up* a couple of gears on your cassette (that's the set of cogs on the back wheel I think) to balance out the change in gear ratio.

A bit of practice today, and I was flipping down onto my small ring, and flipping up a few gears on the cassette without any big loss of momentum nor any big clank. As the hill got tougher, I could move down the cassette towards my lowest gear, and do so smoothly - which really felt like it helped. I can't say I got up the hills any easier, but the process felt a lot smoother.

Another good place to ask noob questions is here:

fetcheveryone.com/forum/cycling-for-noobs-61379

I've had some great advice there already.

Can anyone recommend a good book for a newbie cyclist to read? With tips and stuff? I know there are probably websites, but I do like some non-screen stuff too :-) and books = heart :-)

*that's the biggest cog that lives where your pedals are. It has nothing to do with sitting too firmly on your saddle.

  • Being such a technophile, what helped me was when I splurged out on a Garmin Edge, and when I saw my speed start to drop off, I learnt to change down the gears earlier. By the time I feel it getting tough, I've already lost about half my speed.
    Sigh
    6:37pm, 5th Oct 2021
  • Yep anticipate the hills and get on the small ring early if you're not going to get up on the big 'un. Things you can do to mitigate clanking, destroying and dropping the chain, take pressure of when changing, you know when the bike is in a stand in the shop and the guy is flicking up and down with no noise? That's because there is no resistance with the wheels in the air. Get Di2 way more precise then a human. Or go 1x same range of gears just bigger jumps But the reduced weight should cancel out any negatives. hope that helps.

Cycling: gradient vs pace

1:42pm, 5 Oct 2021
Thanks for all the comments on yesterday's blog. I do understand that gradient is not the only factor that influences pace. But I think that surface conditions, traffic, nerve, weather and momentum are all things that average out over sufficient time.

Here's a visual of what I've been working on, using a high mileage cyclist as an example, and looking at all their cycling over the past 365 days. I've tried to filter out frequent stoppages, and short 'utility' rides. I've excluded a few categories to remove the folks in their sheds or pretending to be on the Isle of Naboombu, or whatever it's called...

I filter the data, breaking it into chunks and only using those chunks where there's a consistent gradient change happening. [Aside: this is probably why this prototype has a low volume of 0% gradient data, but I'll fix that.]

Above the black bar, you can see how much time this cyclist spent at each gradient.

Below the bar, the average km/hr figures (the green numbers) show a nice trend. The dark grey bars represent the standard deviation, and I've also included the max and min values I found in each bar, so you can see how much deviation from the mean there is.

Overall, having inspected this graph for quite a few cyclists now, it feels like there is less variation in the uphill stuff. In just about every case I've looked at, those averages all slide nicely into an exponential glove :-) On the downhill, there's more variation, but from -1% down to about -6 or -7%, it's possible to draw a straight line through the points for most of the riders I looked at. After this point (and this was what I was thinking about yesterday), there's some sort of diseconomy of scale going on :-) Speed is still increasing, but the increases are flattening out. NB, even though the -7% gradient only represents 0.5% of the cyclist's distance, that's still about 20kms of data.

Here's another couple of examples (again, please ignore the gappy teeth at 0% gradient) from other riders:

What's the point of all this? Well, I hope it's nice to look at, even if it's just whilst you drink your coffee, or whenever Faceplant is down. If it gives you any insights into your cycling, that's great (it tells me that I haven't found any proper hills in Bedfordshire yet, and that I most definitely need to do more cycling). It tells me how much an uphill will slow me down, so I can try to prove it wrong. It may tell me what sort of gradient/pace I start to feel a bit nervous at. It teases out my 'flat' pace (or at least it will do that much better once I've fixed the gappy tooth). It could also prove useful in finding a way to compare the difficulty of two different ascent profiles, or estimating the time for a route, given flat pace.

I'll hopefully get something that you can all take a look at soon.

A question for cyclists

5:32pm, 4 Oct 2021
Today (and in fact, for quite a bit of Friday) I have been considering Feature Request 1199:

In the training entry it gives me the average speed by direction - is there any way to also show the average speed by incline? e.g [h]ow much does a +4% gradient slow me down? (I appreciate there may be difficulties in how this is calculated).

Midway through, I realised that it was important to consider uphill and downhill as two different things. Even my tiny bit of cycling over the last week has reminded me that each is a different skill.

After quite a bit of fiddling around, I've built something that feels like it's returning some pretty consistently cool results. But there's an interesting quirk with the downhill gradients, and it makes a lot of sense really. Using data from our highest-mileage cyclists, I noticed a trend in quite a few of them (virtually all of our top 10 highest-mileage riders). Their downhill speed increased as the gradient got steeper, but this increase tails off after a point.

Here's my question then (and I'll share my info when I've done some more work on this tool). At what percentage gradient do you feel "enough is enough", and switch more of your focus to just not falling off?

  • Not sure it's quite as simple as that, it can depend on things like road surface, bends, etc. And for going downhill, the point I start to apply my brakes rather than just go for it depends on road surface traffic, bends, and whether I've got my helmet on!

  • I would have thought that the major factor in the increase in speed as the gradient got steeper tailing off after a point would be due to wind resistance - the faster one goes, the more wind resistance is created.

It's a bit like if one has run on the flat against the wind, then turns around and runs with the tailwind, one runs faster for the same effort.

When I was cycle touring up and down proper mountains, I think my greatest downhill gradient was about 20%, but that was for only about 1/4 mile so I didn't reach a great speed. My greatest downhill speeds were 78kph and 48mph (about the same as each other) on not so steep gradients but down longer hills so I was able to build up the speed. My fastest speed on the "flat" was actually up a gentle slope (2-3%?) - I reached 40mph, thanks to a tremendously strong wind directly behind me, which backs up my thoughts about wind resistance.

  • I know of a 25% hill where you can comfortably go 40mph+ and flattens out nicely before the end, but then there's downhills on the mountain bike that are more about technique and just staying on the bike than speed!

I imagine, for me at least, that there is a tail off in running speed with gradient as well - running down the steep stuff is definitely not as easy as the gentle downhills...
    CBN
    7:14pm, 4th Oct 2021
  • It's not as simple as speed for gradient. We have hit practically 60mph on a short section of 25% decline with a clear run out on the Tandem - but the same gradient on the switchback descent of hardknott pass would be more like 15mph average - because controlling the speed becomes more of an issue.
We have also regularly seen around 50mph on the wide and less steep road descents on the various Canary Islands.
It WOULD be really interesting to see the slowing effect of various inclines too.

As a side issue - I would be more interested in the calculation that the number of metres/per mile climbed over a ride changed the overall speed.

as a rough calculation of most of the rides (road rides obviously) we've done over the past few years - I have concluded that 10m/mile over the duration of a ride equates to an average speed reduction of about 2mph
    or for each 5m/mile, it's 1mph less.

I'd like to see a calculator which predicts your theoretical 'flat' speed based on your speeds for a variety of 'hillinesses'

  • It depends on the technicality of the descent, as some have said above. Plus, it depends on your own personal abilities, what type of bike you are on, weather conditions, and your own level of risk (AKA your bottle). And these things fluctuate, sometimes ride by ride.

So, good luck with finding an algorithm to fit all that together, Lord Fetch. I even think Charlie Epps would have had a problem with this one.

  • what the coaches often use is a measure called VAM which is velocità ascensionale media or mean ascent Velocity and is measured in metres/hour and would be measured over the whole climb.

In terms of descending I am pretty risk adverse on a bike and 60kph is about the limit on a typical British road descent but have hit 75-80kph on a dual carriageway descent that was straight on a day with good conditions. The percentage incline isn't really that relevant as long as I can control the speed. Obviously weather conditions can make a huge difference though

But they stayed upright - allowing for a few rear wheel drifts, unlike quite a few of the men.

For Doctor K

12:42pm, 2 Oct 2021
In terms of participation today, Katie and I were a bit up against it. Katie has hurt her back, so she's only making short journeys around the house to stay mobile; and my calf has tightened further over the last few days, to the point where even walking a purposeful 3.1 miles might be a bit of an ask. I was still able to get out on my bike, as that doesn't seem to have an impact on my calf - but my 10m11s 5k time would probably represent the worst prediction of the day.

But (from my point of view at least), it's more important that today is about remembering than it is about competing. I didn't meet Doctor K, but I did meet Pricey, who passed away very suddenly in 2018 in his thirties. He was a talented runner, with a 2:37 marathon PB, and the last I saw him was when he wheeled in for a grinning high five at VLM 2018. A lovely guy by all accounts.

We put together our usual conjoined K - I didn't want to put Katie through too many takes, but I think she smashed it.

Maybe we could include biking, swimming and being horizontal in bed for exactly 5000 seconds next time round.

Thank you to everyone who has taken part, and shared your K pics in the gallery, and K blogs too.

  • This really is a nice way to remember the fallen. Some of those you've mentioned have come as a great shock to me. I knew Doctor K was ill, but people like Tigerlily, they just seem to drop off Fetch and you tend to presume they've just gone off to pastures new.

I was wondering if there is any value in having a remembrance wall or something like, so we can remember Fetchies who have passed.

Shan't.

12:36pm, 1 Oct 2021
I've just been emailed by a magazine (no, not that one) who were 'really excited' to see if my marketing department (have you visited my site?) would be interested in taking out an ad alongside their upcoming feature on apps and tools that help you run. I explained (very kindly I hope) that I have no budget for advertising, but hoped that FE might be included in their editorial piece as a viable alternative to 'other' services (yes, that one).

The response I got back implied that their editorial content is up for grabs as well: "to add value to any of our [advertising] campaigns, we can offer some great editorial slots" i.e give us advertising money, and we will say nice things about you too. I have tried to imagine a different interpretation of what was said, but I can't.

It feels like one of those things that you suspect is going on literally *everywhere*, but it's still a shock to see it offered up so baldly. And badly too! Unless their audience really is decimated to their fitness.

If it's obvious to you that this sort of thing goes on, I hope it's equally obvious that it doesn't happen here. I am very grateful to the companies that support us with prizes for our competitions, and will use the word "lovely", but never far from the word "sponsor" - so you know where you stand. If I review a GPS watch and I think it looks like a betamax, I will say so. If I review an energy gel that tastes like day-old sick, I will say so. In doing so, I would also try to work out the good features of the product (e.g. "solidly built", or "the kids won't guzzle them when your back is turned"). Ultimately, there's a hopeful person who has sent me something.

There's a hopeful person wanting me to advertise too - so I definitely won't be outing anyone specific. But I will be saying no.

Truth is that the magazines wouldn’t have any content if companies didn’t pay to advertise in them.
