What is the suggested method for gear changing when you need to work thru your gears when climbing ?
Currently if I'm on the outer front chain ring and have run out of rings on the rear wheel I'm rather clumsily changing the front one and then suddenly in too low a gear and lose momentum as I need to change the rear to get it to the required and comfortable gear.
Is there a suggested technique for switching to the inner front chain ring without going to low too quickly ? Change both gears at the same time ?

You should only change the front ring rarely. IE if on a hilly ride stay in the small ring and work up and down the back cassette. If a flattish ride you can stay in the big ring and move up and down the cassette.
When you do need to change the front ring, ie you are in the big ring and can see a bloody great hill ahead, do it on the flat before you get to the hill and run out of gears! Also on the flat it's not as much strain due to the jump, as you have rolling momentum and then you can adjust the rear after to get the correct gear. Thus you will be in the small ring and can just work it as the hill steepens. Going from big to small ring while grinding up a hill is also likely to lead to a chain off.
You should also avoid riding at the extremes (small ring at front, small ring at back, or large ring at front, large ring at back).
Key word: anticipation.

Depends on your gears - I have a compact and often change up 2 on the back and then drop to the small ring on front, in that order.

not 100% sure on this but I think the best plan is not to get into the situation where you are on opposite extremes of the chainrings - I may have read this somewhere but I could of easily just made it up !!!
Doesn't help much does it ?

As a rule, with a ten speed cassette, I try not to use the biggest (physically) two with the big chainring or smallest two with the small one.

Change down before you need them i.e 20 secs or so therefore your legs are spinning for a bit before they catch up best to be 2 on Front and a middling gear on back and smack down to 1 on front.
Then if it's a big hill you'll be wacking it down on back very soon without chain coming off. I found this to my detrement on LEJOG in Devon and Cornwall.

Thanks for comments, its only on hills that I've been using the inner ring so don't really remember what that would feel like if i go onto that on the flat on seeing a hill but hoping to get out later so will give it a go.
Gobi - I've already tried "shut up legs" on the big ring but thats not happening..........
