A video for sharing

5:04pm, 27 May 2020
It's been suggested that I make some short video clips to illustrate some useful bits of the site. Here's the first one - what do you think? If you're on social media, look out for some tweets and FB posts, and if there's any way you can get them in front of friends and clubmates, that'd be triffic :-)

    One suggestion - split even the same one into smaller chunks e.g. 30s. Some social media is keen on v. short things. It can be same material, just chunk it up. Create a playlist for "short 30s tips" and "longer 2 min guides" etc. ? Just a thunk. :-) G

Bees!

11:33am, 27 May 2020
A swarm of bees landed in our garden on Sunday. Luckily Katie knows a beekeeper - she came and collected them, and took them to a nice new hive. Apparently there were about 25,000 - although she is still counting. Here's a little video of them arriving at their new home.

Fetch Introductory Zoom Presentations

3:54pm, 25 May 2020
I've scheduled a bunch of Zoom meetings, for new and potential Fetchies, so they can see some of the things that Fetch can do. I've been in contact with a whole lot of Fetchies who are attached to clubs, and encouraged them to point their club members to the following page:

fetcheveryone.com/zoom

I'll be doing a 15-20 minute presentation of some key features (by sharing my screen), followed up by a 10 minute Q&A.

If you're in a position to share that with your club or group somewhere, along with your recommendation, that'd be great :-)

Have a great Monday, if at all possible!

A promise to all Fetchies

2:41pm, 22 May 2020
[Here's what I put in an email I sent out today, for those of you who aren't opted in to that.]

No paywall. Ever.

This week, strava announced that they were putting multiple features that were previously free behind their paywall. If you're interested, there's a great blog from DC Rainmaker dcrainmaker.com which outlines the changes.

Since it began in 2009, they've attracted over $41m in venture capital, and have hundreds of members of staff, with offices in multiple countries. And there's no denying that they've made an impression. Heck, wouldn't you?

But all that investment needs to come good at some point.

Back in my early career, I worked for a company that made websites. At that time, every company and their dog wanted their first website. Things were rosy. Venture capitalists were throwing money at the company; and as a junior coder, it was all bonuses and table tennis and free snacks.

After a meteoric rise, it ground to a halt less than two years later. The work dried up as the dotcom bubble burst, and the venture capitalists stopped returning our calls. Game over.

strava must do what it takes to become profitable. Who knows what else will go behind the wall? I wish them all the best, and if you want to support them, go for it. I'm just thankful that Fetcheveryone isn't in that position. There's no venture capital behind us, nor a legion of employees. We don't have a paywall, and we never will.

No paywall. Ever.

Of all the decisions I've made about Fetcheveryone, this one feels very right. The roots of the internet are based on sharing knowledge and tools for the greater good. You share parts of your world with the rest of us. Why shouldn't you get the same or greater in return? It's a privilege to provide the arena for that.

When Fetch began, I wanted it to show real people, not airbrushed blemish-free models. But now it feels like we're making a stand on behalf of real people too, because what we offer doesn't change depending on how much money you have to spare.

Fetch survives through voluntary contributions from happy users. Some big, some small (the contributions AND the users – you're all awesome). And whether you contribute or not, you get the same access to everything I can produce. You help me find bugs, you suggest new features, and perhaps most importantly, you bring a piece of you to our community.

I'm not building you up to ask you for a hand out. There isn't a big donate button at the bottom of this message, just my name. And all I want is to make it clear that I think our way is the best, and that you're welcome to be part of it. If you agree, then please share this with anyone you think might like the way we do things. Fetch Everyone.

Best wishes,
Ian Williams aka 'Fetch'

Fetch Virtual Weekend: Replacement Bus Service

5:03pm, 18 May 2020
Sadly, this *isn't* about the idea we had last year about arranging a camping weekend. I'm not sure camping would be much fun over Zoom anyway :-)

No, this is something I'm trying to get going - a replacement bus service for your regular weekend racing adventures. I've created an actual page now, where you can see the folks who got stuck in last week:

fetcheveryone.com/race-virtualweekend.php

There are also buttons for this week's races - feel free to join in.

I've also been emailing lots of race organisers, to see if there's anything that Fetch can do to help (so look out for some ads for rescheduled races coming to your email inboxes soon). And I also got chatting to Sombrero - he's designed some cute wooden medals for virtual racers. There's a link to his medals on the virtual weekend page. I'm also speaking to a couple of other virtual race organisers who are also Fetchies, to see if they'd like to take on one of our virtual distances.

Bing bong.

How has Fetch use changed?

1:10pm, 15 May 2020
Earlier on this week, TomahawkMike asked me about how Fetch usage has changed since the pandemic hit. I thought I'd pull together a few numbers to illustrate some aspects.

Overall page views is a good place to start. There are annual variations, caused by different factors. For example, there's usually a bit of a rush in January, when everyone wants to change their lives. And our December calendar skews things a bit too. Then there's two marathon seasons.

The best comparison is probably to compare each month to the same month the previous year. Doing that shows that our viewing figures have risen every month for 16 straight months :-) Jan 2020 was 3% higher than Jan 2019. Feb 2020 was 11% higher than Feb 2019. Then the virus became really big news. March was up 30%. April was up 37%.

Where's it all coming from?

Not race searches. Usage of the race finder is currently down to about 10% of its usual level from the previous year. Makes sense. There are no races. Everything to do with them is on the back burner. And although our overall page views are well up, the number of 'new' (i.e. not returning) visitors to the site fell quite sharply when the lockdown came - suggesting that we get a lot of our traffic from people looking for events.

Views on the training log initially fell by about 20% during March, but have bounced back, and are a wee bit higher than they were this time last year. I think folks got justifiably nervous when the lockdown has announced but, through a mixture of necessity and ingenuity, have since found ways to get their exercise. Plus the weather's got better.

To break the log down a bit further... here's the April 2019 mileage:

Run = 334818
Swim = 1931
Bike = 177573
Cross = 24793

and here's the April 2020 mileage:

Run = 329707 (down 1.5%)
Swim = 82 (down 96%!!)
Bike = 174402 (down 1.8%)
Cross = 29741 (up 20%)

When you consider all the cancelled marathons in April, that's a decent turnout for the runners. And it's nice to see more of you logging walking. I will get that top-level category sorted out for you one of these days :-)

Aside: Katie's excited and nervous in equal measure to find out that our local OWS venue is open again (with restrictions) as of this Saturday. I hope it's a happy day for swimmers everywhere.

Fmail also fell a bit initially, but is now higher than last year. I hope this reflects more of you staying in touch with each other.

Blog views went up about 30%. We are all in novel circumstances, and reading and writing about them is definitely a thing.

Forum use went up **drastically**. There's been about 70% more traffic on the forum over the last couple of months than the corresponding time last year. I guess that working from home, or in some case not being able to work at all, has offered a bit more time for browsing. But I hope the forum has also offered company and solidarity too, for those that need it.

Gallery views have gone up too. I wonder whether this is anything to do with CV19 at all, and everything to do with the Fetch treasure hunt :-)

The route plotter usage also went up by an f-tonne (82% up in April). I guess more people are looking for daytime routes now that so many have time on their hands, and finding themselves at home rather than running to/from work, or running at lunchtime. Plus maybe it's good to look at where might be quietest. I got caught out by this a little - I reduced our reliance on Googles Map services a couple of years back, when they introduced charges that would have totally crippled us. But I got a £90 bill last month because of the extra map usage - and that's £90 more than it usually is. I'm right on top of it now. They won't get another penny :-)

Games have also been a big go-to. Who Squares Wins has really taken off. April's page views were 252% that of this time last year; and that's up 65% on this March too. No wonder the multiplayer is getting bloody :-) It's our most popular game, based on views.

Fetchpoint is also up - 99% higher than this time last year. Reading the thread, it sounds like the daily bug clear has become ritualistic. Although there's room for more complex tactics, it really can be a simple case of letting the game help you pick your route for the day.

Conquercise saw an initial drop, and then a more modest increase of 17% on last April. That makes sense too. It's harder to find new zones when you're only allowed out once a day, and can't run for longer than you can drive.

The sticker book has taken a nose dive - although I consider a Zoom meeting to be sufficient to say I've met someone :-)

Badges :-) Well, you've all gone nuts for them. I guess it helps that I've been adding some new ones, but it's been another thing for people to focus on, and in turn they've driven you to get involved in other aspects of the site. That's fantastic to see.

In terms of donations, we seem to be doing ok. It was certainly a concern when we entered this chapter in our lives that our income relies on people who would in turn be facing struggles of their own. And I know that there are some folks who have had to tighten their belts and cut out every unnecessary penny. But the Avoid Everyone kit has been a real help, and overall, we're doing pretty good. Most weeks, there are a few new people who have set up a donation, and some lovely folks have lobbed in extra. If being part of the Fetch community was heartwarming before, then it's an absolute fricking internal organ fire risk now.

We watched The Force Awakens last night, and this bit still makes me cry.

So (ss), that's how the site is doing. If you've been sharing your CV19 experience with the site, thank you. I've been trying to make sure I ask people how they're doing with it all, or at least wish them well. It's an absolute b*stard of a virus, but if there's a good side, it's that it reminds us of simple pleasures, and the things that are most important in life.

Big Fetch hugs from me and Katie, and all of us here. X

    I've seen (but not participated in) a few virtual events online and while it's not limited to one day. Limiting it to a few days makes it feel more race like. So maybe give each one a week

    Further suggestion would be rather than having all the events in one week, maybe have each week dedicated to a specific one? Again giving it a bit more of that everyone racing even though you're doing it by yourself.

    Just ideas from a spectator and it's all about what the participants want. I'm currently just trying to get fit in the hope that real racing starts in July. If it doesn't I am fit, maybe I'll consider virtually racing myself although I'm an 'infrequent' real life racer even when fit so no promises, lol.

Beyond that, there's no structure to the meeting, so if you haven't got a suggestion or any comments to make, feel free to admire the top of my head as I get my nose stuck into the Photoshop grindstone :-)

WAVA Standards Update

8:54am, 11 May 2020
Thanks to everyone who voted and commented on my previous blog :-)

I've added a new option in your user settings, which you can find here:

fetcheveryone.com/user-settings.php

It's titled WAVA Factors, and there are two options:

'Always use latest tables', and 'Use 2010 tables'

[If you change it, don't forget to click the Save button at the bottom of the page]

I felt that a 'one or the other' approach worked better than an a step change on an arbitrary date. After all, you didn't suddenly get worse when the new tables came out. But you can flik-flak between the two as much as you like.

Those of you who would like to continue using the 2010 data to score your runs can do so. Your choice will recalculate your WAVA scores on the following pages:

1) your race portfolio
2) the race standards page
3) individual races

Elsewhere (and I'm open to suggestions - this has all been cobbled together a bit quick), WAVA scoring will always use the latest tables - but now you can view your own information against standards of your choosing.

WAVA Standards + Poll

11:02am, 10 May 2020
In the last week, I've updated our WAVA calculators, and set stuff in place to update all recorded race performances to use the new calculation. You'll probably notice your WAVA scores drop a few points across most of your race performances.

Every few years, the underlying data changes. This is because records keep getting broken. Whenever there's an improvement in world-best times within any age group, it effectively means that everyone else gets pushed down the scale a bit.

My view is that all our performances, irrespective of when we recorded them, should be measured against the latest standards. And this means that your previously recorded WAVA scores will tend to diminish over time as the boundaries of what is possible are stretched.

WAVA is, put simply, a measure of "what you can achieve" as a percentage of "what can be achieved" - and its purpose has always been to offer a level playing field for comparison between ages and genders. And this has influenced my decision to apply the same calculation retrospectively. By using the same standards for all historical performances, a run from 2010 *can* be compared to one from 2020. If, during that time, an improvement in elite athletics put downward pressure on WAVA scores, would you think that your 2020 performance was any worse for it?

And although the downward pressure on scores isn't nice for those that have taken pride in reaching certain standards, it's also worth remembering that even if your score for a given year has gone down, so will everyone else. To the extent that if you recorded the 10th best WAVA on Fetch in 2010, that will still be the case.

But I wanted to put it to a vote, see what you all think, and I'll try to find a way forward that looks after everyone. I know that there are folks who would prefer it if WAVA scores were calculated based on the standards at the time. I've created a poll, and encourage you to check the comments before voting, so that those of you with different views can express them.

Thanks :-)

(In not-unrelated news, you might have noticed that your running training entries now come with a WAVA score. As there's no racing at the moment, I am planning to open up our race standards to include runs recorded in training. More on that another time.)

    11:12am, 10th May 2020
  • I have no problem with what you have done :-)

    With regards to your 2nd paragraph, I thought that there was a smoothing applied to WAVA calculations so that an exceptional performance by one individual at one age doesn't skew the figures, rather than WAVA being based on the absolute figure of a world best for each age year.
    Flatlander
    11:13am, 10th May 2020

    Sigh
    12:26pm, 10th May 2020
  • I am in the camp of measuring the performances again the standards of the time where they were set.
    Some of my reason are:
    * we set targets (rightly or wrongly!) against some WAVAs, specially as we get older and our PB times are behind. Time we do in a rce is less relevant that WAVA to compare with the past, and as such it is difficult to see those targets fluctuate.
    * with times progressing, running knowledge and technology evolves, which means it is really same conditions, the impact of new shoes like the vaporfly on WAVAs is going to be decimating, what looked like high performances at the time will compare quiet poorly.
    * I see the WAVA scores in fetch like my record and performance book, once it is written it shouldn't be re-written.
    * I understand WAVAs are relative and that it doesn't affect the time, but judging the past with knowledge of the future seems very counter-intuitive (even by law standards)

I'm surprised at how many prefer the alternative, but I understand, having read the reasoning. If I were in your shoes, I think I'd implement a database field that holds a never-changing snapshot of what the calculation was at the time, as this is clearly important to people, but add another that is liable to being updated when the data change. Bit of headache, potentially, to retrofit some of the interface to present both, but hopefully not too bad

Given that fetch standards are calendar year "achievements", I'd say implement the up to date standards from 01-01-2020 onwards, prior to that live with the fact that they've been "wrong" for the last four years anyway. The only bit I'm almost miffed about is that the old data has vaniished without me having a record of it. Fun with Age Grading :-)

1:52pm, 5 May 2020
Today I've been having fun looking at Age Grading data.

This first graph shows the time (in minutes) that a male runner would need to run in order to hit a particular WAVA percentage. The orange curve at the bottom shows the 25yo runners (who don't get any help from WAVA); whilst the blue curve at the top shows the 80yo runners, who get a bit of help. And each curve in between represents a five year age bracket. The only exception is the 20yo curve, which sits ever-so-slightly above the 25yo curve, as it seems as though male runners don't officially peak until their mid twenties.

I posted that one on Facebook, and monki asked if I knew what the distribution of Fetchies achieving a given grade percentage looked like. So here's the graph, broken down into male and female data:

And just to point out... I'm not the one forcing a binary gender view on this. The WAVA system provides two data sets - one for 'male' and one for 'female'. No offence is intended to anyone who sees themselves in any other way. My contribution here is to make sure that I don't use blue and pink.

  • Interesting that there is a difference in male/female data in achieving WAVA... given how WAVA works you'd expect it to be the same wouldn't you?
    Metro_Nome
    2:16pm, 5th May 2020
  • Are you thinking at all of adjusting the baseline WAVA data to use the 2015 tables? (A lot of me hopes not as my age / preferred distances get hit a lot by that!) Interesting in the gender split. There must be some reason for it as it is so stark. There's a whole host of stereotypical reasons going around my (male) head, but I doubt any of them are truly valid or justifiable, so I won't spew them out!
    larkim
    2:23pm, 5th May 2020
  • The gender WAVA distribution would only be comparable if the leading male & female elites were of an equivalent relative standard compared to the rest of the population. Paula's distance running skewed the results for female distance WAVAs (and given the current record is still way ahead of the rest it probably still does at that age point).
    flanker
    3:20pm, 5th May 2020
  • @larkim - I expect I'll update them at some point.

    @flanker - it's my understanding that world record holders are not considered when building the underlying data tables - so performances that break the mould would not have an impact until the rest of the elite field catches up.
    fetcheveryone
    3:27pm, 5th May 2020
  • @metro_nome - yes, that's what I was expecting. One thing that might have a bearing is the number of people in the sample. There were around 62,000 male performances, and 23,000 female performances in the data. A larger sample might bring about more diversity, and hence a wider-looking distribution? Plus, *penny drops* I realised that I've not filtered for 'best wava by each person', so one person might have 100 70% WAVA performances that might skew the data. I'll rebuild that graph...

  • @flanker - ref Paula, I think the point about her was that she brought the relationship between male and female athletes closer for marathons, but it was still around the 11-12% differential that would be there for most other performances / distances. Whilst WAVA isn't built up just from the WR performances, the broad graph is supposed to be one which "best fits" the world bests across all ages, but Fetch is right that if there are real outliers then those tend to get ignored. And she doesn't hold the WR anymore, so the others have defintely "caught up" (though whether that is shoe related or not, is a different conversation)
