On Monday, we recorded a special edition of the podcast, with eight contributors all live on Zoom. You can listen to the podcast here: fetcheveryone.com/podcast and you can now watch the video of us all here:

I've had a couple of people ask what this means, so I thought I'd write a quick blog to let all readers of blogs know (at least, those of you that read *my* blog).
It's not a secret code, nor a members-only clique
It stands for 'Weekly Blogging Challenge' - and relates to this forum thread:
fetcheveryone.com/forum/weekly-themed-blogging-challenge-61331/
If you CBA* to go look at the thread, there's a different theme for writing a blog each week, chosen by the folks that read the thread.
Everyone is welcome

One of the proudest moments of my working life was teaching a Bulgarian software contractor this phrase. I am sure that his immense work ethic plummeted as a result.

I've just spoken to the guy at Ron Hill Specials. I was lucky to catch him, because he's the only person going in, just to keep the printing machinery in working order. I suggested that we might have an order for him, and he sounded pretty pleased about that. His customers are events and running clubs, so things have dried up.
So if enough of you want one of your own free will, I'll sort out a preorder page tomorrow. Thank you.

The site will be out of action for a few ten minute patches between 11pm and midnight on Thursday 16th April. That's tomorrow, assuming you're reading this today.
The purpose of the downtime is to make some adjustments to the way the disk space is allocated, to allow more room to store your GPS data.
If you'd prefer that in metaphorical terms, we're knocking a wall through and taking some rubbish to the tip.

[WARNING: Pretentious self-indulgent blog follows.]
I was pointed at a Times Online article a couple of days back, that chose to name some cyclists from *another website* as examples of people pushing the boundaries of exercise during the lockdown. The concern was that Fetch might come under similar scrutiny and bad publicity if it were shown that we were encouraging people to exercise irresponsibly.
So (for the benefit of the recording, and if you CBA to read the rest), just don't be dicks, ok?
There.
The chances are extremely high that you're not being a dick. Being a member of Fetch, or even *shudder* of that other site, doesn't make you more predisposed to being a dick either. But the comments on the article were as you might expect. Pitchfork-waving people blaming cyclists for all the world's ills. Runners getting the shrapnel. Pot shots taken at dog walkers too.
If you put your hand on a hot stove, it hurts. If you do it again, it hurts again. Your brain makes a hypothesis, and you look for evidence to confirm or deny it. Building rules from experience is the starting point of all knowledge, and we are the latest edition of a thousand generations, who have passed on all they know (hi Beany!). It's our greatest achievement. But I think that sometimes we go from experience to rule a bit too soon, and our pride and desire to be right only lets us see that which confirms the conclusion we've already arrived at. Worse still we can shut off experience, and just live by our rules, or those that have been handed to us.
Here are some I hope you have already arrived at.
It's not the cyclists. Or the runners. Or the dog walkers, or Europe, or people who voted Brexit, or men, or BMW drivers, or women, white van drivers, gender, folks with more or less money than you, people with a different colour skin, people with more or less education than you, people who pay to usestrava when they could be using Fetch, or people who don't bother to learn themselves the language.
It's just about respect. Balancing your rights and your responsibility. It's not just about you - it's also about that random stranger coming towards you on the path. And if you're anything like me, stuff like coronavirus makes me want to exhibit that respect all the more conspicuously. Don't get me wrong. I still get mightily fricked off when someone doesn't play fair. But I'm saying 'Good Morning' and smiling more at people (whether they like it or not). I'll give three metres, not two, when I can - and I am grateful and happy when that spirit is returned. I am trying to use my ears and mouth in the ratio they were given to me. I am trying to be grateful for the small things, like bird song, and the sound of the dog snoring.
I am making sure I don't let go of the experience. When you are running, riding, walking or (if you're very lucky) swimming this week, remember that you are ploughing headlong into the future. It hits your nose, bounces off your cheeks, and creeps in through your eyes, ears and mouth. Keep your head up. Keep looking forward. And watch where you're going.
Love,
Fetch x

Runners are the new cyclists. Where I live there are lots of (assumed) new park users. It was a little crazy at first but people have got better at sharing paths; keeping left (or right), not walking 4 abreast etc. Seasoned runners, tend to give a wide berth, or even stop, double back or avoid parks completely.Kieren
Some new users haven't quite figured that out yet and don't seem to want to stop or deviate from course when on an effort run so hopefully the more seasoned of us will set a good example.
With that said, I make an effort to smile and give way and reception from all (in Lon) has been good - not at all like some of the vitriol seen on twitter, newspaper comments sections etc. Maybe the good weather helps with the courtesy but then when the weather is bad, it's only the runners and dog walkers that are out1:48pm, 14th Apr 2020 -

We did an online quiz last night with various family members. I offered to do the sport round. Here are the questions - scroll right down for the answers. How many would you have scored?
1) Which boxing match sold 216,000 Pay Per View tickets in 2019?
2) Since the six nations began in 2000, how many times have Italy avoided the wooden spoon?
3) Which triple Grand National winning racehorse is mentioned repeatedly during the 1980 film The Shining?
4) In which decade were derailleur gears first allowed on bikes in the Tour de France?
5) Which Manchester United footballer famously karate kicked a member of the crowd during a match?
6) How many pieces of wood make up a single set of stumps [i.e. one end] in cricket?
7) Phillippides ran from Athens to Sparta to ask for help in the Battle of Marathon – giving rise to the modern race. According to Wikipedia, how far is it from Athens to Sparta? If you're within ten miles, that's fine.
8) To the nearest hour, what's the record time for the 21 mile English Channel swim?
9) Esports: Which online video game offers the biggest solo prize pot?
10) What does Boris Johnson call table tennis?

I am doing some reading around SEO at the moment. That's Search Engine Optimisation. It just means trying to make adjustments to the content and structure of a website, in order to push it further up the search results when people Google stuff. Put simply:
Higher position = more people visit = more Fetchies
NB what it won't mean is me pulling stuff round 'til it's unrecognisable. It's about making small changes to nudge things in the right direction. So don't worry, there won't be fireworks
What I'm looking for is some typical search phrases that you might use if you were searching for some of the stuff that Fetch offers. Pretend you don't know what Fetch is, but imagine you're: looking for races to enter; or you're looking for other affleets to chat to; or you want to find out how to train better. That sort of thing (and whatever else you can think of).
Imagine the comments box below is the Google search box. Leave as many comments as you like - there are no wrong answers. With your help, I can come up with a set of search phrases, and then start by benchmarking how Fetch does. Once I've got that, I can work on trying to make some improvements.
One interesting note - did you know that Google will boost the relevance of sites that you regularly visit? So stuff that's been worthwhile for you before is more likely to get suggested again. For that reason, any benchmarking should be done whilst logged out of a Google account, or an excellent shortcut is to go into private mode. I knew there had to be a second use for that
Please put yourself into the shoes of a noob who doesn't know about Fetch already, and leave lots of comments
Thank you

I've got various nice memories of teachers to recall.
First, was Mr Hale, headmaster of our junior school. He would call into our classroom sometimes, and usually either teach us a maths trick (like a way to remember times tables), or to pose a question e.g. what do all the numbers on a metre rule add up to? I guess he inspired an enjoyment of maths puzzles in me. And he also organised the first cricket match I ever played in.
In secondary school, our Maths teacher Mr Coombes was a very quiet man, and a very heavy smoker. It was clear that he loved maths though, and he even managed to make it bearable, even for those in the class who didn't really like it. Unfortunately, he left suddenly during my A-levels, and the teachers who came in his place were fricking awful :-/
Our physics teacher was also awesome. Mr Moseley, aka Dungeon Master. I used to call by the science prep room during breaktimes, and he'd let me know the cricket score. At parents evening, he told my parents I was a silly sod.
I also have fond recollections of Mr Bradley, my A-level economics teacher. He was a loud and effervescent man with a huge black moustache. A keen rower, he would sometimes sit down in the centre of our U-shaped desk arrangement, and illustrate his rowing technique whilst engaging us all in debate on microeconomics. He was full of proclamations, helping us to see through advertising techniques (e.g. "A Mars a day, makes you fat"), put the world to rights ("no-one under 35 should be allowed to vote, you don't know enough"), and some softer touches ("it's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice"). Not all of his proclamations stand the test of political correctness in the intervening 25 years ("there are only two types of boys that wear earrings, which are you?"), but he was undoubtedly a fascinating person who commanded respect.
Bottom of the list was my RE teacher, who gave me my school nickname which stayed with me for seven years; and all the B&H-chain-smoking PE teachers, who may well have put me off running for about ten years. Overall though, I can't complain - and I feel sad not to mention all the other lovely memories I have with various teachers.

For the ruler: 4950?6:46pm, 11th Apr 2020 -
The trick with the ruler is to fold it in half. So 1 aligns with 100. 2 aligns with 99. 3 aligns with 98. Etc. You end up with 50 x 101 = 5050.fetcheveryone6:54pm, 11th Apr 2020

I went with 0 aligns with 100, 1 with 99 etc. I then cocked up the base 0 so had 49*100 + 50 instead of 50*100 + 50.Pothunter10:14pm, 11th Apr 2020
(NB with both of the pics, you might want to click them to see larger clearer versions)
Here's the old version of the training league:
I had a few feature requests that related to it, so here's the new version (or you can go see it at Leagues > Training):
Some things to note:
1) if you've got ads switched off (i.e. you're a voluntary supporter of the site), the table is now full screen width - a bit more room for the numbers.
2) whichever filters you've chosen, it should do a much better job at delivering you to the page that you feature on.
3) the table is broken into groups of 50 now, not 20 as it was before.
4) the page changer is over on the right. See?
5) the first dropdown shows 'Distance (mi)', or 'Distance (km)' depending on your unit preferences. But there's also a 'Time' option. This isn't new, but the resultant columns display in hours and minutes now, not minutes - so they're a bit easier on the brain.
6) the second dropdown is Run/Swim/Bike, but there's also a new 'All Training' option here, if you'd like to see your total training time over the year (there's a thread for people who like doing that)
7) the third dropdown is a brand new one. Default is 'All Genders', or there's a 'Male' and 'Female' option. As always, happy to add further options here - please send me a feedback to discuss.
8) fourth dropdown is also new - age brackets from 20+, 25+, 30+, all the way to 100+. Handy for seeing what other people in your category are doing.
9) fifth dropdown - choose from All Fetchies, or those assigned to one of your clubs, or just the list of people you're following. This used to be Buddies rather than 'People you're Following', but I'm trying to apply the difference between those two consistently i.e. a buddy is someone *you* allow to see more of your profile; whereas following is all about getting notified when someone else does something.
And that's about it. I hope the improvements work well
EDIT: Here's a link to it: fetcheveryone.com/league-training.php

I'd quite like to see myself on the Following option along with those I've chosen to follow, to see how I'm comparing. I'm sure you could argue that you are really following yourself anyway. What do you think ?
