Rainbow Kit - update on delivery time...

3:15pm, 26 May 2021
Just had word back from our chums at Ron Hill Specials. They are aiming to get the shirts and vests back to me within two weeks. Our pre-order closes on Tuesday 1st June at midday (get your order in, as there won't be any spares). So I hope to get them out in the post on approx. 18th June, all being well. Thank you for your patience :-)

Fetch Ron Hill Cycling Jerseys

12:25pm, 24 May 2021
When I announced the rainbow kit (see fetcheveryone.com/shop for details), a few people were interested in a cycling jersey. I have spoken to my contacts at Ron Hill Specials, and it's something they produce!

In terms of material, there seem to be several 'variants of interest' - so I wondered if there was a preference amongst those who are interested. Here's a poll:

I haven't heard anything about cost yet, but will add that to the blog as soon as I can. Obviously, whether we go ahead will depend on the demand.

Jimi Hendrix vs Run DMC

3:42pm, 18 May 2021
aka Walk This Way, Purple Haze :-)

If you're a walker, you may well have already seen the updates I've been making the site to make walking a category in its own right. Previously it was just a sub-category of cross-training.

I had to choose a new colour for it, and I've gone with a nice purple :-) Specifically, #990099 if you like RGB hex codes.

Hopefully, I have squished most of the bugs relating to the change, or else paid them off until some future date. I hope you will help me flush them out of the building!

All your existing training entries have been migrated:

Cross Training > Walking becomes Walking > General
Cross Training > Nordic Walking becomes Walking > Nordic Walking
Cross Training > Hiking becomes Walking > Hiking

Can someone who understands please tell me where walking becomes hiking? Is it down to the equipment? Do you have to stay overnight? Mandatory mintcake? Do you need a lifestraw? I *need* to know :-)

Here are a few places where you should already be able to see the benefits of the new category (beyond the purpleness):

Training Home
fetcheveryone.com/training-home.php
At the top of the page, there's a bar that defaults to run data - but if you click the bit that says 'Run' it cycles through your categories. I can see that I am ranked #936 for my annual walking mileage. There used to be a bit of a fudge for cross training, but now walking is there properly - and each of the totals and ranks lead you through to a further relevant bit of analysis.

Benchmarks
fetcheveryone.com/benchmark.php?category=W
You can see your quickest mile, 5k, 10k etc from all of the walks you've registered on Fetch. My fastest walked 5k is 1:03:29, so of course now I want a sub-60 5k walk ;-)

Annual Comparison
fetcheveryone.com/training-summary-annualcomparison.php?category=W
Mine looks a bit daft, because I've only really started logging walks since the start of the castle challenge - but if you're a regular walker, you can see how your 2021 is shaping up.

Training Mileage League
fetcheveryone.com/league-training.php?category=W
Like I said earlier, I am 936th in the walking mileage stakes. Now that it's a proper category, it slots right into this table. And if you want to see something crazy, go look at the mileages of the people on page 1. There are people regularly knocking out 300 miles a month.

365 Table
fetcheveryone.com/training-365.php
This table shows a rolling 365 day sum across all categories. You can see the ebb and flow of everything you've done. Walking fits right in!

All Time Walking League
fetcheveryone.com/training-league-alltime.php?category=W
Wowsers! Dave A has banged out 15,000 miles of walking since 2012. That's pretty nuts, in an awesome kind of way.

Best Ever Month
fetcheveryone.com/training-analysis-bestmonth.php?category=W
Now has a walking option. Easy peasy :-)

Fetch Games
In theory, your WSW, Conquercise and Fetchpoint situations SHOULD be unbroken by this. In all cases, I have left the usual rules in place for anything marked as cross-training. I've just given anything marked as walking the same value as cross-training.

I'll send an fmail out to point all our existing walkers at this blog - and if anyone notices anything that appears to be broken, it's probably simplest for the next day or two if you comment on this blog. That'll give you the opportunity to see if someone else has reported it.

I hope you like it all. I've had one complaint (which was more of a raised eyebrow than a complaint, I think) at the purple-ness, but by and large, it seems to have gone down well. As part of the work that I did, I have centralised the colour scheme - which means that in theory I could let each person pick their own colours :-) But that's maybe for another day.

I am also open to your suggestions for other top-level categories, now that the shackles are kind-of off. I've been wondering about some sort of 'workout' category, to cover all the mysterious dark magic that goes down in gyms - but I don't know too much about that, beyond the fact that I *think* you're supposed to take pictures of yourself in the mirror standing in a very unnatural way and post them on t'gram.

Have an A1 day :-)

The return of parkrun - a poll

10:55am, 14 May 2021
In theory, parkrun returns on June 5th, or perhaps a little later in some areas. As we get closer to its potential return, I've been following our parkrun thread with interest. There's been a lot of interesting viewpoints and suggestions. Here it is: fetcheveryone.com/forum/parkrun-thread-26887/

One of the obvious issues is the congregation of large volumes of people, and along with that, the willingness of landowners to allow the events to go ahead. I don't know if parkrun HQ have surveyed any would-be participants, and if so whether they have published any of the results - but I thought that it would be a good subject for a Fetch poll.

Assume that your local parkrun is ready to begin. What's your view on attending?

Feel free to add a comment, or to dive into the parkrun thread :-)

  • I've been back volunteering at junior parkrun for the 3 weeks - it has been more popular than before lockdown despite the restrictions in age.

It's all been working perfectly, we have had as many adults running as children and as many again helping/spectating! There have been 65-85 finishers each week.

This shows me how many adults want parkun to return as in most cases it isn't the 4 to 10 year olds that were desperate to come to the park 😁

The regular parkusers have loved seeing ud back, we've had so many positive comments :-)

I won't rush back as I'm not ready for quite such a crowd. Like Elsie we aren't far away from areas with an increase in cases due to the Indian variant. I've never been involved in the organisation side, but I do think parkrun's all or nothing approach is unfortunate. Across all areas of life we are having to do things differently and monitor the results. Everyone has had to compromise and adapt, I don't really understand why parkrun think they must be different.

Loads of people have taken up running in lockdown, so I can't see the numbers being any lower in future. I have barely run at all recently as I'm just not enjoying it and I just don't see the point of walking a parkrun as my home parkrun is not entirely supportive of walkers, most just run and go after, and I have on occasion been finishing and the funnel is being dismantled as I finish even with others behind me!

Something in the woodshed...

1:31pm, 13 May 2021
With the help of the server company, we're one step closer to making walking a top-level category - and freeing up some other stuff as well (like having "water" as a surface for swimming, for example!).

Unfortunately, there was a slight hiccup this morning. Really slight. The slightiest. Normally, when you update a training entry, you should see an instant update to your monthly, annual and all-time totals. But that link is currently borked - although I hope it'll be sorted in the next hour or so.

I'm running a bit of code every half an hour or so that will pull everything into line - so you may not even notice... but if I don't say anything, then I know that *someone* will notice :-)

Anyways... as you were :-)

But it still shares many of the same attributes e.g. how far, how fast, how much, where - and therefore I think it's well-suited to receiving the same kind of analysis for those that are interested. And being a top-level category opens up so many options for it in terms of the site architecture - I can't see any reason whatsoever not to.

Default to walk

2:25pm, 12 May 2021
Walking is a fast-growing part of the site! In 2016, we logged about 57k miles of walking. In 2020, we logged 381k miles. And so far in 2021, we are up to 251k - so we should hit half a million miles of walking this year. Stuff like the Castles Challenge has no doubt encouraged people to log their walks - but it's also been a nice way to get out of the house during All This.

A few folks, especially those with older GPS devices, have found that their walking gets imported to fetch as 'Cross Training - General' - and they then have to manually change the category. They ask if there's a way that my code can sniff out when they have done a walk, so they don't have to change it every single time.

Some of those older devices have a catch-all "other" mode, or if they *do* have a walking mode, the file that comes to Fetch just lists it as "activity = other".

I could potentially write some code that makes some assumptions about walking speed - but that has the potential to upset folks, and that's the last thing I want.

Instead of that, there's a new setting in the training log:

If you tick the box, then anything that would previously have come across as 'Cross Training - General', will now come across as 'Cross Training - Walking'. Please help people find this feature if you see anyone having trouble with classifying their walks.

To pre-empt a question... yes, I would very much like to make walking a 'top-level' category, alongside run, swim and bike. It's a bit of a grind though, as I am bound by some database design decisions that I made about 17 years ago. The database table only accepts 'R', 'B', 'S' or 'C'(ross-training) as valid categories, and in order to change it, the whole table needs to be recreated - a bit like having to empty out the entire garden shed, just to reach something at the back. On top of that, there are a few other changes I'd like to make to the format of the table - so I'd like to do it all in one hit if I can. And as a result, it's a fairly weighty undertaking.

Anyway... if your walking comes in as 'Cross Train - General', and you want *all* your 'Cross Train - General' to default to walking, that's the checkbox for you :-) If you do other kinds of stuff, like rowing, kayaking, pilates etc, then you're probably best off not ticking it.

A tour of the Fetch Office

3:30pm, 10 May 2021
On my Instagram feed today, I took a few pics of the Fetch office. I never ever want all the action to take place Somewhere Else, so I've uploaded the main pics here too. If you want to see the full set, head over to instagram.com - and do please hit the follow button for more shit in future ;-)

But anyway, here's my little office tour.

Here's my desk - a few piles of junk, but also plenty of room for my lappie and favourite squared paper notepad and V7 pens. I've got a nice big monitor, and a decent pair of Sony headphones for when the washing machine is on! Yep, I *do* share the room with our white goods - you can see them towards the back. And if you look closely, there's a bit of a cobweb to the left of the Delorean on the wall - I am hoping that the spider will come out and grab some flies when the weather warms up. It's all currently decorated with a few prints from Sombrero and phal. There's also a cheeky PS4 plumbed in to the monitor too, for when I need a quick break. Fun fact: the shelf on which my my monitor sits is held up with our 2017 and 2018 Running Awards trophies. They scrapped our category after that (and stopped returning my calls), so I thought I'd make their trophies work for me!

Under the desk is where Stephen likes to take his naps, and where he sleeps overnight. On cold days I like to tuck my feet under his furry backside - and he doesn't seem to mind too much. On bad days I crawl under there with him! As I write this, he's snoring gently - it's a wonderfully calm noise - I love it!

I've also included a picture of our bookcase. I *love* looking at people's bookcases - it's the first thing you see when you step in!

When we moved in to the house, the room existed, but it was all bare blockwork and rafters. About four years ago, I boarded it out, and my dad plastered it all for us. Some of the Insta pics show all that happening, and they're nice to look back on. It's now moved from a dark concrete space to a warm and bright part of the house. And it's *nearly* finished :-) I've still got a few bits of skirting to attach, and a breakfast bar to fit over the washing machine - but you can't go saying stuff like that on Instagram ;-)
