Who Squares Wins: 64 screenshot

1:19pm, 28 Jun 2019
This morning I've been putting together the multi-match grid. Here's a screenshot:

Because the grid looks super-busy, I'm going to add a toggle that will let you turn the values in each square off and on. If you're in the game, they'll show you how many points you'd need to score in that square in order to take ownership.

Over on the leaderboard, it's interesting to see that a lot of the top-ranked players haven't explored more than 100 squares. flanker in fourth has only visited 35 squares, but has managed to retain ownership of 17 of them. His squares are all along the western edge of the grid - in line with the tactic I suggested yesterday.

The owned squares (as opposed to the tied 'cake' squares) are all in the hands of the top 17 players, but this may well change when players get access to live feedback. I've added in an 'Explored' column, which acts as our 'goal difference'. Right now, in order to get in the top 32, you need to own just one square, *or* you need to have explored 90 squares.

There's an outside chance I can get this all ready to access in time for this Monday's new round of 1v1 matches :-)

  • I'll start with a game of 64 based on the top ranked players, as a bit of a trial run. If it's good fun, it'd be easy to start with 128, 256 etc; or have multiple simultaneous matches.

  • Good. I reckon it looks good, it'll be difficult to see what's happening early doors, trying to beat your match in the main game and look at where you are in the top 64...I imagine it'll become clearer as the rounds go on, and become tactical. I also reckon people might play match game as opposed to the main game.....but all this is to be seen.

  • Looks really good idea and would act act as an incentive in those weeks where you are losing against a keen individual opponent. That said with my current losing sequence, I will need to wait for the 256 option to start or try and move up the table! As a side note, would it be possible to add a number next to our name on the Player rankings to save us all having to count 64/128/256 lines!!

  • I've just tried building a 128 player match, and that includes players with rankings of 1018 and above - so pretty much everyone who's concentrating and been round for a few weeks :-) If you *were* relying on the numbers, you'd need to factor in the people who have signalled they're taking a break.

Who Squares Wins: 64 Player Edition

6:54pm, 27 Jun 2019
Keen listeners to the Fetch Podcast will know that I'm plotting a 64 player knockout edition of Who Squares Wins. If you don't know what that is, here's a link to the game:

fetcheveryone.com/wsw.php

How it works: there's a grid of 225 squares surrounding your home point. The furthest ones are about 1.5 miles away from you*. You score points in each square that you visit. BUT CRUCIALLY, you're playing an opponent somewhere else in the world. They are running around their own grid. The goal is to score more points in each square, in order to own that square. The player who controls the most squares at the end of the week-long match is the winner.

It's good fun to play - all you need to do is to sign up, then log your training with a GPS device. The game does the rest. Give it a go: fetcheveryone.com/wsw.php

Anyways...

For a while now, I've been thinking about various multi-player options. My current plan is to kick off a game with 64 players. The idea is that the 64 would all be battling to own squares, with half the field eliminated every week, so we'd be left with 32, 16, 8, 4, 2 and then an eventual winner.

I'm currently running a demo using the squares data from the 64 highest-ranked players, seeing what happens if they were all trying to score points on the same grid. Here are some of my findings :-)

All 225 squares on the board have been explored. This isn't unusual. Several high-ranked players have been able to reach all the squares in their grids. If you're a rural player, the game can be tougher (especially if you don't want to get shot by a farmer), but there's not a lot I can do about that, short of offer to swap houses with you. I'd like that.

The most popular square on the board is the centre square. Again, unsurprising. Most people have their grid centred around home, so every run starts from that centre square (don't worry, your opponent can't see your map, they just see the points you've scored in each square). So far this week, the centre square has been hit 258 times.

The corner squares are the least-visited, with the top-right square getting only 9 visits since this round of matches started on Monday. A while back, I did a 3D plot in Excel, and it made this lovely sorting hat:

There's a strategy tip right there - you've got a better chance of owning some squares if you run round the extremities of your square.

Overall there have been 11,230 visits to squares - that's in about 3.5 days since this week's matches kicked off (they start at midday every Monday, and run for a week).

149 out of the 225 squares on the board are owned outright, with the other 76 tied. The tied squares are represented by a cake symbol :-)

Ownership of those 149 players is in the hands of 21 of the 64 players. That means the other 43 players own no squares. So I'd need to find some sort of 'goal-difference' equivalent to help separate the scores. The number of squares explored sounds like it'd work well.

I also think that we'd see a wider range of owners once I make the 64 player grid available to the players. Right now, those who are playing fiercely are focused on defeating their individual opponents. Adding an extra thing to think about will produce some changes in playing strategy.

Right now, I think that putting the top 64 players into this game would be a nice incentive to encourage players to reach the top 64. But there are a few strategies for getting more players into this version of the game. For starters, there could be a 'division 2' game, with another 64 players. And the 32's that get eliminated from that first week can get put into a new game together.

Gosh, this turned into an effluential post :-) But I hope it encourages some of you to give the basic game a go, because I think it's pretty awesome. Here's that link again: fetcheveryone.com/wsw.php

*sqrt(2) to be precise. The outer parallels of the grid are a mile north, south, east and west of your home point. So the outer corners are sqrt(1^2+1^2) =~1.41 miles away.

  • Just wondering if I have any chance of being in the top 64. Also if I need to move my grid so some of the squares don’t overlap a quarry. Deep water isn’t that conducive to running.

  • I'm currently #21 in the rankings, but I now take a break in weeks when I have a Sunday race (or on holiday); otherwise I miss a crucial WSW day :-) It would be helpful to declare up front when this will start and whether folks want to opt in or out that week, for those reasons.
    Sigh
    8:06pm, 27th Jun 2019
  • I thought about opt-outs Sigh. If we start with 64 available players (pre-excluding players on a break), and during that week, one of the top 32 decided to opt-out, we'd just allow player 33 through to the next round. I envisage a time when we'd have multiple 64-player games all running, at various stages of the knockout process. If you make it into a 64, that'd be 6 weeks you'd need to commit to.

  • Looking at the players who are currently doing well in the 64... Gymfreak is currently the player owning most squares with 26. Her match suggests she's doing well - she's on 70 points. But there are players in other matches who own more than double the number of squares.

So doing well in the 64 perhaps means repeated visits to some core squares, to ensure progress to the next round. She's got some 10's in some of her squares in her match against straitjacket.

Next highest owner in the 64 is Wabo with 21 squares. She's actually losing in her individual match, currently losing 34-80 to Shabs.

It's going to be interesting to see how this affects things :-)

  • In terms of tweaks, I'm not sure how you replace the old race comparison. For me I've noticed 60 day totals seem to be important, but a good 90 day total can help overcome a slump in the middle. Also the what is important, can get away with less long runs and progressives which are replaced with fartlek for 1500m but pay for it in longer races. Not sure I'd get that from any other tool.

Actually the days before race breakdown for types of runs would make it the perfect tool. For example, I'm pretty sure for my best longer distance races, I've done two to three progressives in the weeks leading up to them.

I entered the GPS and then changed the distance in my log to 5 miles. I thought nothing more about it until i looked at my yearly summary fetcheveryone.com/img/summary/2274/a42ee52e555457e78b0d3b3129f2af72.png

Training sub-menu rejig

2:17pm, 26 Jun 2019
In order to pull together all the various bits of training log summarising and analysis, I've had a play about with the 'Train' sub-menu.

I've merged 'Summary' and 'Analysis' into 'Summary & Analysis', and turned that link into a page that offers a (hopefully) clear view of the most popular tools we have available for you to look at your training data. Here's what the S&A page now looks like:

fetcheveryone.com/training-summary.php

L to R, top to bottom:

1) Annual Summary - that's the infographic I've just launched.

2) Monthly Summary - obviously, that's the monthly view. I aim to produce a similar infographic for this, so you can get sharing.

3) Weekly Summary - a fairly simple summary, but I like it, because it begat (2) and (1).

4) Hey look, it's an ad for a race. Ads for races are much nicer than those Google Ads, right? If you're a voluntary subscriber, you can turn the Google Ads off (Profile > Settings). What's that? You say you're not a subscriber? You can put that right here: fetcheveryone.com/invite.php

5) Benchmarks - GPS ones (so have a look at yours, and filter out any batshit ones); and more simple ones based on the times and distances recorded in your training log. This page is probably due a bit of a square up.

6) Analyse your pre-race mileage - a fairly recent addition. Pick a common race distance, see your best attempts, and watch your pre-race mileage wiggle upwards across the screen. There's another interesting variant of this graph if you go look at any of our race listings.

7) Race Comparison - an older page, but still a hit with the fans. Pick one of your races, see a range of graphs showing how the build up to that race compares to your best efforts. Plagued by that y-axis problem. I did a bit of work on this today to make it look reasonable on mobile (because it was looking like total ass. Fankoovermuch).

8) Streaks - in recent years, I've got better at balancing training and resting. I have fewer streaks, and as a result (I think), fewer consecutive rest days. Interesting to look at.

I've also promoted it a bit further up the sub-menu, because I think it's worth it! In the process, I've retired a couple of pages that weren't getting a lot of traffic - but if there's (a) anything you miss, or (b) any other bit of analysis you think I could add to this set, then do shout out.

  • @westmoors - I think I've queried this in the past, and the issue is that as each graph is created in its own right it doesn't "know" what the axes of the other comparable graphs would actually be. It would have to iterate through each of the graphs first to work out the upper and lower bounds for each graph before preparing them all, so would be quite server intensive I think?

One request for it though. I like how the new one shows more than two races and that would help with my current situation. My PB 1500m race and second best race are in the same second (0.07 between them), currently the old one picks up the wrong race. Wouldn't matter except my training was better for the first one (I think, more miles anyway). If too difficult, don't worry, fingers crossed I can eradicate the 'problem' soon.

The other one that I use for "notes" is "X-Training - Other" but I suppose you can't exclude that because you don't know that it isn't used for important and intensive training like Cockle Digging which just isn't in the list. 3:44pm, 25 Jun 2019
I've finally got the infographic ready for you to have a look at.

If you go here:

fetcheveryone.com/training-annual.php

it should build it for you (after a potential delay whilst it accumulates all your data).

Those of you who prefer the data in table form can click "Show Data Table" to see the data behind the graphic.

Some notes:

1) I'm not respecting your miles/km choices in the infographic yet.
2) Cyclists, swimmers and cross-trainers. By all means have a look, but don't be angry :-) Katie was quite proud of her 10 metres of swimming ascent. My plan is to create diverging graphics for you too. There's lots of overlap between R/B/S obviously.
3) I've put a cut-and-paste link above the infographic. You're welcome to share it if you're impressed, but it's mainly there right now so you can point me at interesting oddities.
4) the benchmarks in the infographic include times taken from your race portfolio. For example, my 5k time this year doesn't show up in the GPS benchmarks, because it came out as 4.99999999km or something. But so long as the race is in your portfolio, it'll pick up the right distance. Racing benchmarks have a little lightning scar, just like Harry Potter.
4b) you might get the Harry Potter scar for races shorter than the ones you've done. If you've run a marathon at a given pace, it follows that you must be able to run shorter races at that pace too.
5) Those of you who wanted to see your training broken down by category... I've managed to get this into the data table view.
6) When I'm happy that we've knocked the roughest edges off, this will all go under Training > Summary.

Thanks. Looking forward to your feedback.

I do notice that it's picking up benchmarks I've deleted for track (10k benchmark for 2018).

Not sure the five longest runs is useful in this format. I guess it's based on the marathon thing but given it would cover more than one cycle not sure it works. Doesn't matter either way though.

  • I'm reading the infographic as this is how you've trained and the 'benchmark' section as this is what you've achieved. Hence I'd like there to be choices in terms of what shows there as achievement is different for different people.

I actually want to be "short changed", I rarely race above 5000m, so wouldn't have many in the achievement section in terms of races, but in terms of achievements that's what I class as my achievements, not benchmarks which are just nice to know for some runs. A 10 mile benchmark is meaningless to me for example (although with other stats it might show I'm fitter).

Also as a track runner, I delete all track benchmarks as GPS always measures long, so as currently constituted the infographic wouldn't capture my actual races even if they were benchmark distances.

I would like to represent your altitude climbed in terms of something just a bit more... Fetch :-)

The training summary - the morning session

1:15pm, 18 Jun 2019
(For context, see my previous blog)

1) I've added percentages to the different zones

2) I've added LR = Longest Run for each month

3) It now obeys your mile/km preferences.

4) I've added new rows for ascent, cadence, HR and Beats/mile.

fetcheveryone.com/training-annual.php

--

The percentages are a really handy addition. I've been looking at the percentage of training I'm doing in my red zone (quicker than 5k pace ~ 7:30/mile), and my orange zone (quicker than threshold pace ~ 7:50/mile). In good years, I manage 90-100 miles (~11%) in these two zones. So far this year I've accumulated 39 miles, or 9% of my 2019 mileage. Interesting :-)

--

I'm gonna pull together some infographic elements now, and have a play in Photoshop, to see if I can put together some sort of image that illustrates all this in a schexy way :-)

The training summary - a wordier blog

10:00am, 18 Jun 2019
When I shared the link to the new 12 month training summary yesterday, I was just about to stop work to go have my tea - so it was a bit of a minimalist blog :-)

Here's the link again, for those that want to try the prototype:

fetcheveryone.com/training-annual.php

First of all, here are some answers to the questions you raised in the comments:

Would it make more sense for the zones to display percentages rather than miles?
I don't know about more sense, but I can see that it would be useful. A training month where 100% of your effort was in zone 5, but you only ran 1 mile wouldn't do you as much good as a 100 mile month with 10 miles in zone 5. But I'd agree that seeing the percentages as well would be useful.

Don't really understand, but I quite like it
I've had this conversation with Katie too. It's one of those tables that takes a bit of time to interpret, but I still see the monthly and annual summaries as a big work in progress. The first step is being able to collate a large amount of data into one place without crushing the server (it feels like I'm almost there with that, although I'd like to see if I could make it go a bit quicker still). The next step is being able to present that data in a way that *IS* understandable. I've mentioned infographics before (open up Google, and search for images matching 'infographic examples' if you don't know what I mean). I know they're not everyone's cup of tea, but I am hopeful that I can turn the data into something visually appealing. I think they are great for getting people's attention on social media too. There are companies out there that charge for providing summarised data from that other website. It'd be nice to offer this to Fetchies for free.

Also maybe show longest run?
Yep, I reckon that's a good one. The underlying summary data has other useful stuff too, like ascent, wattage, heart rate, cadence, number of training days, length of streaks etc. Watch this space.

It gives me miles not km
It's a fair cop. I normally end up retro-fitting the km conversions for those of you that prefer metric. I'll get that sorted.

I ran a marathon/10k/etc, but it's not showing up in my benchmarks
There are two potential causes here. The benchmarks are based on GPS data. So if your 10k race came out as 9.99k according to your watch, you won't get a benchmark. Secondly, the benchmarks are protected against the occasional GPS glitch. When they're calculated, if you suddenly move a hundred metres in a couple of seconds, it assumes a glitch, and starts afresh after that point. Unfortunately, this tends to be more of an issue for longer races, because of the greater opportunity for such glitches to happen. VLM is a great example - the tunnels and Canary Wharf make the GPS go mad. There's a chance I can fine tune it a bit, but do please allow me a pinch of salt ;-)

Would be nice to highlight the best benchmarks somehow
Yep, agreed. On my list.

Is the data up to date?
I fixed a bug this morning. When you log a bit of training, it now clears the cached data for that month, and for the year. If you're seeing a discrepancy, try logging a fake bit of training, to let it rebuild. Let me know if still not matching up.

Am I missing the big button that takes you from week overview to annual overview?
Well, you could use the back button... but yes, the individual views are not stitched together all that well just yet. The difference now is that we have a proper hierarchy for all these pages to fit together under 'summary', and they can take their place in the second-level menu under 'Train'. And I get to respond to feature 182 :-)

Why isn't 1 mile listed?
Because I'm an idiot. It's there now.

When you bookmark it, could it have a more relevant name than 'Training Summary'?
Yeah, I'll sort that out. Page meta info is something that always ends up being shoved in at the end, and it really shouldn't be.

My best time for a mile is 2 mins 5 seconds
If you go through to this page: fetcheveryone.com/benchmark.php and click 'View more' for each of your GPS benchmarks, you can delete the ones that are obviously bullshit (look for the red X's).

That should keep me going for a bit :-)

12 month summary mega-graph!

4:47pm, 11 Jun 2019
I bet that title got your attention. Who in their right mind doesn't like a 12 month summary mega-graph? I know right.

It's not ready yet, because I've got to make sure that its sheer gravity doesn't crush the server :-) But I've been thinking about how best to bring together a number of pages from the training log that all do *similar* things.

Here are the pages I've been looking at:

Summary of your month
fetcheveryone.com/training-month.php
This is a pretty epic page, but the issue was how to integrate this into something bigger. There were calls for it to be incorporated into the training log - but this new page I've created will allow you to drill down into any month to see it in detail. Just click the month titles in the new page.

Summary of your week
fetcheveryone.com/training-week.php
Ditto really. The columns in the new page will be clickable, allowing you to see what's happening in that particular week.

Benchmarks
fetcheveryone.com/benchmark.php
This is a popular page, so it can probably stand on its own two feet - but I wanted to pull in the monthly bests. These will probably link through to the benchmark table.

Training Summary
fetcheveryone.com/training-summary.php
This was the starting point for me developing the new page. It was decent enough, but a bit dry - and I felt that the colour-coded training zones would bring this page to life. It links through to:

"Training Summary Graphs"
fetcheveryone.com/graph.php
a page full of graphs showing weekly mileage, and a couple of others. The new page aims to bring together the best bits of these two pages, with some added colour-coded beef.

Leave me a comment with your questions and suggestions for how it should work.

Whilst I'm here, I've got a nice list of new donators (going back over the last couple of weeks) to give a shout out to:

  • Nice :-)
Would it make sense to have the first 3 rows of the right-most column populated - total miles, total time, yearly average pace ?
Could the best monthly figure at each distance be highlighted ? The first thing I did in the above example was scan across each row to see the best times.

  • I’ve added those totals since taking the screenshot, and should be able to highlight the bests. Thanks for the feedback.

  • Looks good. I'd like a rolling 12 months if possible rather than calendar year. Or maybe a period of your choosing up to a max of 12 months?

  • Like it! :)

    6:51pm, 11th Jun 2019
  • SPR - the way I’ve built it, you can specify a year and a month in the URL, so that shouldn’t be too hard. The hardest bit right now is the time it takes to pull together all the data.

  • Looks pretty awesome!

  • You tease
    Homer
    10:40am, 12th Jun 2019
  • That looks useful, especially for a year across year comparison. Would you be able to nominate the year, say from 01-02-xx to 21-01-xx. Being really awkward would it be possible to stick your races into a separate row

  • doh!, you know what I meant about the dates :-)
    Ocelot Spleens
    4:13pm, 12th Jun 2019
  • As it stands, you can choose the year and month, but not dates within that month. So you'd get 1st Jan to 31st Dec, or 1st Feb to 31st Jan, or 1st Mar to 28th Feb etc.
