Dr Fetch will see you now

3:39pm, 23 Nov 2015
A few months ago, it looked like this:

and now (we're four rows away from finishing the floor), it looks like this:

Yesterday, me and Katie spent the majority of the day getting the new floor down. Beyond the 'Proud Peacock'-coloured studwall live the washing machine and tumble drier, but everything this side of that will be a double desk, some bookcases, and a psychiatrists couch.

Still to do:

1) Finish floor
2) New sockets
3) New light fittings
4) Paint and fit skirting boards (has anyone got a chop saw?)
5) Boxing in around the washer / drier
6) Fill with furniture
7) Work from home

Only the grumbliest, achiest chocolate... :-)

10:02am, 22 Nov 2015
McGoohan came to our parkrun yesterday! I think I've met him about three times before in real life, all spread out over the last seven years, but it's weird innit - it was just like we've known each other for years. Which of course we kind of have.

parkrun went well (is it just me, or is it doubly hard to start a sentence with a lowercase letter?) - it was penguin-pants cold, so I did a little warm up lap, then jogged to the start to get a good spot (otherwise you get hemmed in). I stood behind a very humble young chap - I said to him "are you one of the fast ones?", and he said "Don't know, really". He came second! I got an SB: 22:14, and it felt pretty good (7:07,7:13,7:12). I think maybe the long runs are helping, as is being about 10lbs lighter than I was six months ago.

The cake shop tempted me with a 'curly wurly brownie', which was so dense I felt myself getting sucked in by it's gravitational pull. And I had two flat whites too. In hindsight, it's not really the best refuelling strategy (even if you ignore the three free chocs I inhaled immediately after finishing the run).

Got home, had scrambled egg on toast, and spent the next 9 hours working my way through the grumbliest achiest stomach I've ever suffered with. This is something I need to get on top of, because it's happened far too many times recently.

Today, I feel much better, and we're just back from 4 miles for me, which in turn was part of 6 miles for Katie (whoop!). I've just had a bit of water so far, and hoping this will give my stomach chance to recover from the run. My guess from a bit of reading around is that it's probably a bit shut down immediately after running - not so much blood flow, a bit dehydrated, and surrounding muscles tired.

Right then, it's time to put the floor down in our new office!

The Stanford Experiment

1:12pm, 20 Nov 2015
Towards the back end of last year, Apple released Swift 1.0, an updated programming language for putting together (amongst other things) iPhone apps. It largely passed me by, because I'd had so many failed attempts trying to write iPhone apps in Objective-C (the previous language). I thought maybe that my insides were all wrong.

So along comes Swift. And within a few months, the online university lectures started popping up. Basically, any book on iPhone programming is out of date if it's more than a year old - it's all changed so much.

I looked through a few, abandoned a few, and eventually settled on this one from Stanford:

itunes.apple.com

I found that the lecturer was voicing the same sort of questions that I have in my head when I'm trying to understand what the fudge is happening.

Whilst I appreciate this may be somewhat underwhelming, here's a screenshot from the app that it's taken me only a few hours to put together:

The top number is the distance travelled in miles, and the second number is the time. 21 seconds is the approximate amount of time I spent walking up and down the street with it, before I started grinning like a loon.

It is SO on.

Snugs - Review

12:11pm, 16 Nov 2015
A few weeks ago, I got an email from a company called Snugs, asking me to try out their custom-fit earphones. For me, the name conjures up a pair of lovely warm ear muffs :-)

As usual with any blog that reviews a product, I want to clarify that I've not been paid to say anything (although I have been given a free pair), so I'll give you my honest opinion, good or bad.

Snugs came about because everyone's earholes are unique - and therefore no in-ear design can fit everyone perfectly. Although I've never struggled too badly with my iPhone headphones, I do find that they can sometimes be a bit uncomfortable, and can sometimes fall out.

For a long while now, pro musicians and people working in noisy environments have had custom-made in-ear plugs and earphones. Some googling reveals that a common technique to create them involves making a cast by shoving silicon into people's ears, and waiting for it to harden (don't try this at home, you numpty). But it was only a matter of time before someone harnessed 3D scanning and printing technology, and Snugs are one such company.

The process begins with a visit to/from an audiologist, who makes you wear some ear-rulers and then puts a probe in your ear and gently wiggles it round whilst it builds up a picture of your ear on the screen right in front of you.

Science bit: there are little markings on the ear-rulers that help the probe work out its position, angle etc, so that it can stitch together all the depth information that it's sensing. It's a bit of a weird feeling, a bit like having a turkey baster hovering around just inside your earhole, but the audiologist (in this case, the founder Paul Jobin) was as gentle as could be.

After a fascinating 20 minutes, the process is done, and all that's left for me to do is to pick colours, and choose a set of headphones for which my Snugs will be created. If you've ever had a pair of earbuds with a set of little rubber sleeves, the idea is that you can throw all the rubber sleeves away, and stick the Snugs on instead.

Once the impression has been taken, your ear shapes are kept on file, so if you change your earbuds, you can get Snugs to create a set that will fit your new earbuds.

About a week later, I got a parcel through the post with my new earbuds. On Paul's suggestion, I went for red and blue, to help me remember that 'red = right ear'. The resultant effect is not dissimilar to something you might find stuck to the underside of a desk during double maths, although Katie says that they look like little elephants, which is far nicer.

The crucial part of course is the fit - and although it takes a little bit of practice to get the angle right, and a bit of a 'screwing' technique (quiet at the back!) to get them in, they fit extremely comfortably.

I work at the dining table in our open plan lounge / dining area / kitchen - and things can sometimes be a bit busy, especially when there's a conversation going on, or the telly on. The Snugs claim to remove about 30dB of noise, which means that they'll vastly reduce the noise of quiet conversation, and take the edge off anything louder. They do seem to achieve that better than the bog standard over-ear foam pair that I have; and when I found a good internet radio station, they helped me get into my own little world without having to blast the music too loud. I’m wearing them right now.

The obvious question for runners is 'what are they like on a run?' - and so of course I've given them a try. My first outing was on a nine miler in drizzle - so an ideal test for long-term comfort. I'd been running for about five miles and pulled my phone out of my pocket to check my email (I know, right!) - and I'd gotten one from the Snugs PR lady, asking me how I'd been getting on (in fairness I'd had them a while). And it was only the email that reminded me that I was wearing them. In short, they are deliciously comfortable, and don't tend to need adjusting at all.

Paul was keen to point out the obvious pitfalls of running whilst having your hearing impaired, and even showed me an app that listens via the mic on your earbuds (assuming your earbuds have a handsfree mic), and gives you a warning when it detects external noise. I run with headphones reasonably often, and didn't really have a problem staying aware of my surroundings. I guess the key is not to assume that having any of your senses partially impaired is an ideal substitute for being extremely careful when near the road.

On subsequent runs, I've enjoyed using the earbuds a lot, and still find them jolly comfortable. I’m no audiophile - in fact I probably ruined my ears a long time ago when I used to go bezzing around in my dad’s Vauxhall Cavalier, windows down, system up, stupid music on - but the sound seems pretty clear to me. But if I'm being picky (and that’s the whole point of this really) there are a few situations when they offer a little reminder that they are not quite perfect.

Occasionally they can 'break the seal' i.e. as you're grunting your merry way along, a little gap opens up that lets in outside noise. So as I ran past a loud lawnmower, it was sort of going rrrr____rrrr____rrrr____. Conversely, the seal can often make you feel a bit like you’re underwater, or that you want to clear your ears. There’s a little tube of “Otoferm” cream in the box - I’ve googled that, and it’s for hearing aids (which of course, are the original in-ear technology) to aid “insertion”, and helps to provide a more consistent seal. Largely though, they are like a good wicket keeper - you don't know they're there.

The Snugs came on a pair of Jaybird Bluebuds, which are Bluetooth-enabled. This means that there’s only one wire, connecting one ear to the other - pretty cool. However, the wire is a bit slack, and it bounces on the back of my neck during running (not at all noticeable when walking). The close fit of the Snugs means that the vibration travels down the wire straight into my ears, so it can introduce a bit of a muffled whumping noise when you’re plodding along. The buds come with a little clip, so that you can shorten the wire, and make it sit against the back of your neck - but unfortunately I can’t find it. Being a plucky scientist type, I’ve used a bit of sticky tape to shorten the wire, and it vastly reduces the interference. This is a good tip for all earphone wearers :-)

I’m in a fortunate position where I get to try stuff like this out - and I really do love these. But I do wonder whether I would have otherwise have contemplated them. The cheapest option (which includes 3D fitting at an audiologist; a pair of £40 earbuds; and production of your very own ear-elephants) is £199; and the Bluetooth pair I have would cost £299 all in. For me, this would be a heck of a lot to spend, when for years (and ears) I have managed ok with headphones at a tenth of the price. Added to that, their very nature means that you can’t just borrow a pair to see how you get on with them. But I know that spending money on sound quality can be something of a pastime, and these definitely feel like they are in that territory - so if this is you, then they are worth a look.

If you're interested, go take a look at the Snugs website:

  • Thanks for that review, very interesting. But ultimately - LOL at the price. That's quite the leap of faith to take for something that might, or might not, be better.

  • I always worried about filling my ears with stuff and not hearing what's going on around me and steered away from earbuds. I bought a set of aftershokz, they weren't cheap but not £199 or £299's worth.

They sit on a neck band and the sound comes from 'speakers' that sit in front of the ear on your cheek bone. The sound is picked up through vibration and comes from the special forces technology market, leaving your ears free to pick up sound from around you. They do sports ones, ones for just noise and ones with a mic for those all important pain in the arse phone calls you don't need while running.

They need charging up, via usb after about 12 hours, and I've found them really good.

Thanks for your review though Mr F

  • I've used custom earplugs in the past (silicon injection method rather than 3D printing) for use when motorbiking, where wind / engine noise can be a real issue. I had a pair of simple earplugs and also a pair with inbuilt earphones for listening to sat-nav, mp3, etc.

As you've noted, the seal isn't always 100% (the silicon is squidgy but still firmer than most earphone sleeves or disposable earplugs, in order to be hard-wearing and long-lasting) and vibration can be transmitted along the cables. I also found that the firm silicon could make my ears extremely painful after extended wear. That was because I used to be in the habit of chewing gum, so the constant movement of the jaw was making a tiny rubbing motion between the earplug and ear canal, which over extended time became very sore indeed. Ouch! The same would possibly happen if you were to wear them for a long time while running due to the bouncing action.

In the end I ditched mine and now just use a good pair of Shure in-ear 'phones with interchangeable sleeves to achieve the right "fit". The sound quality is better, the seal is better, and they're more comfortable - for both biking and running.

  • I bought some custom earmoulds a couple of years ago from a company called ACS Custom. I think they were about £125 including the price of taking the impressions whereas it looks like Snugs want another £40 for that. Admittedly they aren't cheap but for sheer sound quality and comfort (I've used them on multiple 8hr+ flights including sleeping with them in) I wouldn't be without them.

Love, Commitment, Support

1:13pm, 11 Nov 2015
My last blog finished with us heading upstairs to get ready for the wedding :-)

I ironed a shirt for the first time in nearly four years :-)

We got back to the hotel lounge to find Mr and Mrs Jigs, and were soon joined by Loon Dod and Lintie; CB and EB; and new arrivals including JulesR - it was lovely to meet him - what a lovely man!

It all gets a little bit confusing from here on, so excuse the timeline!

We wandered over to the area where the ceremony was being held. There were some signs to point us in the right direction:

and just as we got near the gates, there was a cheer from the nearby rooftop - I wondered if Santababy would come into the venue on a zip wire:

When we all got sat down, I had my hand shook by a beaming Joopsy, who was sitting in the row in front. Fetchies everywhere - we spotted HappyG, and Katypie (cake maker extraordinaire, and a lovely lady too) in the distance :-)

After a traditional bride's prerogative five minute delay, in came Siouxsie, grinning with delight, followed by Santa who was looking lovely, and very happy. Awesome! The guy in charge of the ceremony was a runner; as was the photographer; and just about everyone else it seems! I've never heard so many running stats and parables crammed into a wedding ceremony - and I highly approve. All that was missing was a good graph! The blog title comes from the three important words that we can relate to our running, and to our loved ones. Great stuff!

There were some fun photos, and more introductions for us, and (of course) some champagne. Then Katie got the chance to give Santa a hug, and I got the chance to do some photo bombing :-)

The speeches came before the meal, and although Siouxsie did a fabulous job, the star of the show was Santa's boy. He opened up by saying that he wasn't used to speaking in front of a lot of people, but with a few simple heartfelt words he had me, my wife, our table and most of the room in tears.

The food was good, although I did get told off by HappyG for trying to eat my pudding before my main course!

The first dance was followed by a bit of Scottish dancing, and me and Katie got hustled round the Gay Gordons before we knew what hit us :-)

I was struggling to hear in the main room, so after a while we decamped to a sofa where it was a little bit quieter, but we still ended up with a great big Fetchie photo (thanks Dave_K):

and had a go in the photo booth:

It might sound like hyperbole, but there really was a lot of love at this wedding - clearly two people who are made for each other, and it was a real privilege to be part of it. I heart Fetchie weddings!

The following morning we even made it to Edinburgh parkrun - a big wide path along the sea front, with a frying-pan shaped out-and-back course. We ran with Dvorak, who chatted with us all the way round, and is YET ANOTHER lovely Scottish Fetchie; and z1000jeff, who is not a scary pumpkin avatar, but also a nice man indeed. Despite the drizzle, it was clearly a well-loved parkrun, and we came to the finish line with a cheer from the speedy Jigs', and katypie, complete with the piemobile and adorably saucer-eyed baby pie :-)

It was, in conclusion, all way too brief - we would love to have stayed much longer, and had more time to talk to everyone - so much so that we're already thinking about how and when we can come back! But I do need to build up my stamina, because I had a little doze in the airport:

Congratulations to whwrunner and santababy :-)

The pre-wedding blog!

2:22pm, 10 Nov 2015
What a great few days it's been!

On Thursday morning, our alarm went off at some sort of illegal time, and we stumbled out of the door, and down the M1 to Luton Airport. We ate porridge in a daze at Pret, people-watching - mostly business by the looks of things. In the queue for the plane, we met Mr and Mrs Jigs, who shared our Percy Pigs as we took off, and (before I'd even realised) landed again.

It was still pretty early at this point - too soon to check in to our hotel, so we collected our hire car and drove into the centre of Edinburgh for a nosey around. I recognised the little internet cafe that I used to call in at to check Fetch, on my only previous visit to Edinburgh, which must have been at least 7-8 years ago.

We wandered around the outside of the castle for a bit, had some coffee and food, and then some more wandering. We nearly went into a very swanky place called The Dome, which had more Christmas decorations than Father Christmas's attic; but we ended up in Starbucks instead. A stroll through Princes Street Gardens to get back to the car, and we were off to our hotel.

Katie and I had the most fabulous, dribble-inducing half hour sleep in our lovely room, before getting into our bathrobes and heading for the hotel spa. The man at reception told us we just needed to go to the ground floor in the lift, and it'd be right there. He neglected to mention that we needed to dash across the car park too - but we did that barefoot in our robes and cozzies.

The spa was a bit of fun - with the exception of the thing that shot water at you with fearsome energy from above and below - which was quite uncomfortable, or as Loon Dod later put it: "it hurts ya bollocks" :-) :-) :-)

So yeah, lots of Fetchies to meet, so many that I'm scared of forgetting some. Loon Dod and Lintie; CB and Earlybird, Siouxsie, and of course, Santababy. After a few hellos, we went off for our dinner at the fancy-pants restaurant - the steak and enormous chips was absolutely amazing, but the 'veloute with an egg in it' was a bit nondescript. Unfortunately there was also a tiny bit of plastic in the little jug of sauce that came with my steak - but it didn't stop me cramming the food in until I was full to the beak.

After food, we met up again with the Fetchies, and had a good laugh, especially when we heard from a certain catering manager about the customer who asks for a decaff double espresso. And I also learned how to use the phrase "here's your pish water, ya silly bitch", although any connection between the two is pure conjecture :-)

My eyes were crossing with tiredness (or was it the wine and the lager?), so we toddled off to bed some time around 11, but not before we'd filled out our breakfast card for the morning. It was an extra £3 to have it delivered to our room, which seemed to make a lot of sense. In a fit of bravado (or was it the wine and the lager?) I put my hand up for haggis and black pudding. I figured that I have limited opportunities in my life to try things cooked the way they were intended.

The following morning we set our alarm early-ish, with the intention of going out for a gentle 3 before our breakfast. With no idea of direction, we followed a signpost that said 'Path' that deposited us back on a similar road with an opposite-facing sign also labelled 'Path'. Here's my route - mainly for HappyG to check whether I ended up running through his garden:

http://www.fetcheveryone.com/training-log-view.php?id=11856292

By two miles, we'd nearly lost our sense of direction, but luckily every bush in Scotland has two friendly police officers in a range rover behind it (presumably, based on a sample of one), and we got some directions back to the hotel. However, we were both so pleased and delighted that we were vaguely heading in the right direction, and not about to be arrested for trespassing or murrrrrderrrrr, that neither of us listened to the directions at all. But we ended up back on the dual carriageway, and after a quick check in the petrol station, we found our way back to the hotel. Our allotted breakfast time was approaching, which led to a discovery - I can motivate Katie to run faster by offering scheduled fried food!

We made it in time, and I tried my haggis (it's ok, sort of a bit like fried liver, but the more I thought about where it came from, the less I wanted to eat), and black pudding (sort of nothingy really - I wasn't freaked out by it much, just a bit disappointed).

Coffee with the Fetchies, then it was back upstairs to get ready :-)

Good morning Fetchers, good morning Everyone

8:40am, 9 Nov 2015
The one small thing that's keeping me sane as I stuff envelopes and bags to send out your Fetch subscriber goodies is giving you all 'Test Match Special'-style nicknames. For the unaware, this usually just involves truncating your surname, and adding '-ers' on the end. So Jonathan Agnew is Aggers, Henry Blofeld is Blowers - and so on.

I've got about another 100 bags to ferry to the post office this morning, and 20 envelopes, and then more labels to buy - and even then there's more to do. So don't worry if you haven't received your stuff yet - it's all making it's way to you.
