On Tuesday, I had some proper geek time with the other cricketers. For some reason, we started talking about our bats. B told us that he regularly planes bits off his bats, and sometimes ruins them as a result. A told of a magical place just off the A14 that *only* sells bats. We reminisced about the bats we used to want to own when we were growing up watching the game (me = Gray Nicholls Dynadrive. I bought one as an adult and it got a nasty split that ended its playing days). I got some good advice on repairing the current crack in the bottom of my bat with runny glue - so fingers crossed I've taken care of that.
Here's a video from the previous week. It's some side-on footage of me bowling. I repeat the third ball, and slow it down, as I felt that it was a good one.
Last week's bowling wasn't great overall - but on Tuesday I felt like I got some good rip. I've tried to remove as many variables as I can by always starting my run up at the same point, and focusing on my spinning finger. Shoulder still feels it's letting me down occasionally. Batting went ok - disappointed not to get a more exciting bruise after being hit on the full just above my right nipple. My fault for trying to charge the bowler

I haven't entered many races post-Fexit, because I've not been in PB-shape, and it feels a bit of a waste to shell out just to trot round. But this is undoubtedly a challenge, and would certainly keep me busy for the next six months. #toot #casnewydd

Thanks for all your comments on yesterday's blog. I wasn't joking - that first edition of the page was literally thrown together in about 45 minutes.
I've had a bit more time to muck about now, so I've:
1) added a bunch of Amazon links (I will work through the rest) and images.
2) removed some duplicates and corrected some titles and author names. I've also made the code a bit smarter - it won't allow exact duplicates.
3) given you the option to rate and review. If you'd already upvoted a book, it's assumed that you've given it five stars - but just delete your review, and stick in whatever you think. And you can do a 200 character review of the book too. Have fun
Please do go back for another look, and add your reviews and star ratings:
fetcheveryone.com/books.php
I haven't gone near any search/filter/tagging stuff yet - but I expect I'll do something like that soon.

We have some 200 film reviews in the Hello to Jason Isaacs thread, if you want to import them into this rather fantastic format and then link to the Amazon DVD and/or Amazon Prime Movies buyable versions? (as this was a the original money spinning premise)?HappyG(rrr)
Then you've got kit: reviews never really got off the ground there, but there are some in there.

You really could monetise a lot of the site, at no detriment to Fetch users or impartiality. Basically you just chase along behind them, whenever something is recommended or mentioned and put in a wee link to Amazon via your affiliate link. Done!G

I've thrown together a very quick page that will hopefully allow us to capture all the best books for runners, bikers, swimmers, walkers etc. In the spirit of total honesty, my plan is to see if I can turn it into a little money spinner, by adding Fetch-specific Amazon links. But it could also be genuinely useful - we could add little reviews etc.
Please add all the books that you like, and vote yes for the ones that you think are great. I will (probably tomorrow now) go through and add a bunch of Amazon links, and work out some way of presenting the jazziest ones.

Great idea! Some suggestions: the list of titles/authors needs to be clickable so you can search alphabetically, the option to add a new title should allow a check (like the races feature) to see if it's already listed; plus, I just added a book and it appeared with a vote, I wasn't sure if it was me so I clicked again and it now has 2 votes which might both be me (Runner by Lizzie Hawker).Sigh6:56pm, 28th Oct 2019

I've carried on working with the tagging system since my blog earlier today. Here are some things for you to look out for:
1) Under 'Filters' on your training log, you should now see 'Tagged' as an option. This dropdown contains every tag you've ever applied to your training log. Choose one, and it will filter the list to show only those entries that match. NB the other filters and the date range will still apply - so you might need to broaden the search a little.
2) The tags on each row of your training log link into the filtering scheme. Click one, and it will just filter your list on that tag.
3) Likewise, when you look at an individual training entry in detail, and click the tag, it will take you back to the log, but filtered for that tag.
4) There's a page where you can manage all your training tags. You can find it on the training log under 'Settings'. It takes you here: fetcheveryone.com/training-tag.php It produces a tag cloud - click a tag, and you have the option to rename it. I've found lots of cases where I've used very similar tags e.g. 'loo' and 'toilet'. If you adjust the name of one to match the other, all associated training entries get united too. I enjoyed tidying up my list

On your training log, if you look at the 'Entries' tab (which gives you a list), there's a little dropdown box. It contains stuff like 'Predictions', 'Conditions', 'Speedmarks' etc. I've added a new option, called 'Tags'. Here's a quick link to get you there:
fetcheveryone.com/training.php?view=tags
For a long while, it's been possible to tag individual training entries. And when you click that tag, it shows you all the other training entries that also use it. But unless you knew a specific day when you used a particular tag, it wasn't straightforward to find it again.
So if you choose 'Tags' from the dropdown, it'll show all the tags against all the training entries within range:
and you can also quickly add them. As per my 18th Oct blog ("Let's Jazzercise"), tags allow you to categorise your runs in multiple ways (e.g. a parkrun can also be a threshold run, and it can also be 'rainy' and 'cold' at the same time), but also in any way that you choose (so if you like to call them tempo runs instead of threshold runs, or if you like to call them "quicklegs" or "breathless" or whatever, you can do that).
Sub-categorising your run as "long", "recovery" etc by choosing from the category dropdown will eventually become "tagging the run as long, recovery etc"; and those limited surface and weather options become whatever you want them to be.
See how you get on with that

There are 208 different categories in our database - from 'Running - General' through to the most recent addition of 'Cross Training - Jazzercise'. They've all been requested by various Fetchies over the years, and they're all awesome ways to spend your time I'm sure.
What you might not know, is that next to the category picker for adding training entries, there's an 'Edit your category list' link.
Until yesterday, the editing worked by maintaining a list of categories you'd excluded. I've switched it round so that it instead stores the ones you've included.
This might seem like unnecessary tinkering, especially if you saw the bug this morning, where folks had no categories showing. But there were several popular feature requests that drove it.
Feature 264 asks for the ability to put favourite categories at the top of the list. I can see how this would be necessary with 208 categories - less so with, say, 10 categories. However, storing an order for *included* categories whilst simultaneously storing *excluded* categories doesn't make any sense. Far neater to store an ordered list of included categories.
Feature 184 asks for the ability to put categories in alphabetic order. See above, really. Not quite there with reordering, but let's see if this helps.
Feature 384 is another one that makes me wonder if the folks who voted for it are aware there's an opportunity to edit the list
And (not covered by any feature), the fact that we were store excluded categories meant that any time I added a new category, it would by definition be added to your list of options.
If you've:
(a) never filtered out your unwanted categories before, or
(b) had more than 50 categories on your list,
the server will build you a new list, based on the categories you've already used in your training log, and start you off with those. If you genuinely do more than 50 different training activities, it should pick this up - and you're always welcome to click the 'Edit your category list' link (which should be appearing next to the category picker every place you see it) to add back any that you just like to have listed
If you're not asleep yet, I'd like to point out the tagging system. The best example of the usefulness of this is in the categories. A long time ago, I was asked to add 'Running - parkrun' as a category. I did, although I wasn't especially keen. For me, 'parkrun' can be a half hour chat with Katie, or it can be a tempo run, or a run-walk, or even (Heavens to Murgatroyd) a race
And yet, it's not wrong to call it 'parkrun' either.
The tagging system allows you to categorise a training entry in multiple ways e.g. run, tempo, parkrun, raining, calf, sad. And if you click one of these tags, you get to see all the other training entries that have been tagged in the same way. It's by no means a perfect system (there are some good feature requests that point the way forward esp. #313, #305), and longer term, I'd like to roll it into a neater ball that removed the need for our rigid category structure.

Nice. Allowing for a handful of "custom" training types would be good too, say 5 for each activity type (ideally with an option to rename them at the front end) so that ones that I might like but might be irrelevant to others (e.g. DNF, Run with kids, etc) can be easily added without a change request. I can't remember if I logged that as a suggestion or not.larkim12:32pm, 18th Oct 2019

I'm off to filter! I quite liked it when you auto applied tags based on the Notes added in the description (because I always write notes). By the way, instead of saying "the server does..." could we give your lovely code and its hardware a name? The Fetchinator or FetchBot or The Fetchenatron or something? Competition? Poll?! Good work. You've achieved more than I have this week!HappyG(rrr)

I would use the tags more if I could view the entries tagged in the same format as in the log (ie look at HR, pace etc). To me, the tags are useless unless I can view the same info. Completely agree with this. The list had grown way to big for exclude to work: to me at least it seemed like “want to categorise your runs?”, “yes”, “well first spend half an hour going ‘wth?’ -> delete and then you can do it”roberton
And I agree about new ones appearing.
Interesting about tags as well. I’ll play with that now!9:42pm, 19th Oct 2019
About a week ago, I added a new marker to Fetchpoint. I spawned one at random in my mile circle, and waited a bit to see what would happen. I saw (with pangs of jealousy) that my precious had been moved from its original spot before I had a chance to get my hands on it. Filthy runners and walkers had taken it away in their pocketses.
This morning I set off to make sure I got my hands on it. There was a certain thrill as I ran past the car park opposite Bedford Council's HQ; and then another runner came round the corner, and I nearly stoved his head in to make sure he didn't log his run before me. Wicked, tricksy runner!
My plan was to take it just a little bit closer to Mordor (if you find my precious, it will find the closest point on your run to Mordor and drop it there). In man's tongue, my plan was to leave it on the Kempston Road so that a Dark Rider might cycle it further along (I saw flowerses). But it's got lodged on a little cut-through where I scuttled back to the river to check my reflection.

Here's me bowling a few balls so you can roast my action; then if you're a real sucker for punishment, there's about 11 minutes of me batting:
I don't feel like the bowling went especially well yesterday, but my penultimate ball in the bowling part of the clip felt like a nice one, and landed in the right place.
Bit disappointed with the quality of the GoPro footage - but it is cropped from the original, so maybe that's why it's a bit fuzzy. I will see if I can do some side-on footage next week and get the camera a bit closer. I think the GoPro would survive a hit, but the tripod probably not.
Seven players last night, including two new ones and a couple returning; so we're building slowly. And some of the guys that have turned up regularly have chucked a few extra quid in, so we're just about covering costs. They're a nice bunch

Decent action though, young man. What happens if you bowl a little flatter and faster? Do you lose the turn?3:14pm, 16th Oct 2019 -
I wasn't getting much turn last night - I think when my head is thinking about leg spinners, the wrist comes round a bit, and I get looping topspinners. When I just try to push it through a bit flatter with a neutral wrist, and get it right, they tend to spin a lot. I will see if I can focus on that next week.fetcheveryone3:21pm, 16th Oct 2019

Just calling it that so you know which blog I'm referring to from t'other day.
I've made the server re-process all the training entries that produced sub-60-second-miles, to see whether the current algorithm does better at filtering out the crap. There were over 8000 runs to process.
I'm pleased to say that only 1 out of 8000+ managed to get through the net, producing a mile time of 47 seconds (which is relatively pedestrian compared to 0.25 seconds!). I haven't looked at why it did - but it looks fairly extreme. It looks like someone didn't reset their watch in between two runs that were about a hundred miles apart
Now that I'm happy with that, it's currently reprocessing absolutely everything from 2009. When that's done (hopefully by the end of today), and if things are still ok, I'll push 2010-2014 inclusive through the mincer.
On another note... checkpoints. These are the automatically generated points on your routes that you can try to get faster at. I'd be interested to get your views in the comments on whether you pay them any attention; and how you might improve them given the chance. There are some checkpoint-related feature requests - give them a vote here whilst you're at it: fetcheveryone.com/featurerequests.php?sort=id&keyword=checkpoint

No, they seem completely random and rarely give any useful comparisons. For example, I generally seem to pass between two points via completely different routes which makes the times meaningless.Diogenes2:39pm, 11th Oct 2019

I have used them in the past and probably will in the future but to a fairly small extent. Where I live I have some standard routes and it's pretty hard to join 2 checkpoints with other routes without really trying. So I used them to see that I was improving when I came back from injury. Ok, so I'll keep writing the cricket nets blogs for as long as there's something to talk about
We got five people on Tuesday, but one of them was a new one - so if the ones that couldn't make it this time come back, then we're getting there.
I'm really enjoying the bowling at the moment - much more than the batting. This may be largely down to the fact that I keep damaging bits of myself whilst batting. With bowling, it's (ideally) the same rhythmic action each and every time. With batting, there's the impact of ball on bat, or (often worse) the swing and miss that leaves you without that opposing force to neutralise your energy. It's the batting that has stirred up my neck and shoulders - I'm pretty sure of that. I'm still doing ok though. It's week three, and I got bowled for the first time in about 70 minutes of batting. And I'm claiming mitigating circumstances, because the bowler farted loudly just before he let the ball go
On to the bowling. I'm still bowling plenty of trash, but having purple patches where I'm landing it in the right spot.
The type of bowling I do is called leg spin. It means that from a right-handed bowlers point of view, when the ball lands, it veers ('breaks') sharply to the left.
If you imagine throwing or bowling a ball, the 'neutral' hand position is for your palm and fingers to be right behind it as you let it go. Like picture number 1. This doesn't impart any sideways spin on the ball.
When I bowl a ball, my natural not-really-thinking-about-it hand position is more like picture 2. My hand slides to the left of the ball, and my fingers roll over the top of it - so that the ball is spinning in the direction shown by the seam. This is a standard leg break.
Because of this weird hand position, it's sometimes difficult to land the ball on the right spot. The ball can loop high in the air, or can come charging down towards the pitch - easy for the batter to clatter away.
There are some variations that a leg spinner can produce just by altering the angle of their wrist. Picture 3 shows a top spinner. The back of the hand is pointing forwards, and so instead of spinning the ball from right to left, it drops more quickly, and can bounce higher.
Picture 4 shows a wrong'un aka googly. The wrist is bent further round, so that the back of the hand is pointed towards the batter, and the spin on the ball means that it spins from left to right. This can *really* mess with your head if you're batting.
So my regular ball is number 2 - and I've never felt like I've been able to bowl number 3 or number 4.
What I *have* noticed this week, is that when I've tried to put more revolutions on my leg break, it's actually spun less - to the point that it seems to be travelling straight. The lovely realisation is that because my *natural* hand position tends to produce a leg break, those balls where I am putting in extra effort to spin the ball are *perhaps* turning into top spinners. And (totally not on purpose), I actually bowled a very mild wrong'un on Tuesday - which I am *still* disproportionately excited about.
I described it to Katie as turning up to charms class, and realising that you've just done Wingardium Leviosa - but that you're not quite sure how you did it.
The adventure continues

Excellent. Looking at the pictures I was going to say bowl top spinners with added leg spin. Then when you said it just went straight, you may well have bowled a Shane Warne-like mystery ball, a slider. Had many a happy hour playing cricket when I was a lad. Not in a team - a gang of us would find the nearest patch of grass and throw some wickets up. Then take it in turns bowling, batting & fielding pretending to be whichever England player took our fancy. Sadly left playing cricket behind when adulthood came around. Lovely memories though 🏏😀.Stevewjj1:25pm, 10th Oct 2019

GPS Benchmarks...
Every time you log a run*, the benchmarks code looks through every centimetre of your route, and pulls out the fastest sections of it. In a ten mile run of near-total drudgery, you might have a really excellent kilometre, where everything feels absolutely perfect and you run* like Sarah Connor in Terminator 2. Not Terminator 1, but Terminator 2, where she's all hench. Proper pointy fingers on your hands. Face like steel. That.
For every run*, you'll see a set of benchmarks that represent everything from your best 400m, right up to your best marathon time. Clearly, if your run* is shorter than a marathon, it won't give you a marathon benchmark. But please say you're up to speed with this bit now, so I can get on with the rest of this blog.
Good, thank you
The problem is, that sometimes your GPS will throw a Benny, and transport you three streets away. You break all manner of land speed records, and the whole concept of benchmarks becomes murkier than the deep end of a council swimming pool.
Here's my watch flipping out at Gunnersbury parkrun:
fetcheveryone.com/t-13372113
and here's another one where my GPS thinks I am some sort of neutrino:
fetcheveryone.com/t-7312711
Benny Neutrino. That'd be my rockstar name.
The key then, is to capture these moments where the GPS goes off on one. It's a constant process of discovering new ways in which it can f-up, and working out the best way to correct that data. And how to do so as early as possible, so that the multitude of tools and games in which your GPS data gets used are not exposed to crap.
There are 2.8 million one mile benchmarks in the Fetch database. And amongst those, there are 38,526 instances where folks have broken the four minute mile!
Some of these can be attributed to bike rides accidentally classified as runs - but there are 14,920 cases where folks have broken the ONE minute mile. The crapspeed record for the mile is held by Fetchie Robert Townsend in a fabulous 0.251957 seconds
And the womens' crapspeed record is not that sluggish either, with Sushi. completing a mile in 0.295518 seconds.
The good news is that most of the worst errors are old ones. Over the years, I've been able to catch some of the more obvious errors; and GPS tech has improved too. But it's still nice to have consistent data, and some of us have been here since 2004
Here's the number of sub-one minute miles, broken down by year:
2008 = 0 one minute miles (we didn't record GPS data until some time in 2009)
2009 = 851
2010 = 2392
2011 = 3975
2012 = 4894
2013 = 2799
2014 = 7
2015 = 2
2016 = 0
2017 = 0
2018 = 0
2019 = 0
I'm going to push all of these training runs back through our benchmark calculator, to see if it will be smart enough to eliminate all the bogus numbers. And anything that's still looking bad can be studied like a cockroach that's survived a nuclear blast
That'll take a while to process. More news soon.
*or ride, swim, walk or Geoffreying, or whatever the crazy kids are calling it these days. You know what I mean, right?

Don't worry. I'm not going to blog about every net session.
I was a bit nervous going in to last night's nets - mainly because my neck had been painful for the whole week. I'd done something to it whilst batting.
Thankfully, Katie had worked some amazing magic on it, and I had a wider range of movement.
We got a little increase in numbers - seven players turned up. We just need a few more to turn up each week now, and we'll be ok.
My bowling was a *little bit* better. Certainly I felt better about it. The line is getting better - I didn't put too many into the side netting. The length was still a bit of an issue - dragging quite a few short, and overpitching too. But when they were landing, I was getting some decent spin. The middle finger on my bowling hand is crucial. If I feel the ball fizz as it leaves that finger, I know it'll be a decent ball.
One of the guys who came yesterday evening has played first class cricket. When he batted, he seemed to have so much time - and when he played his strokes, his hands and feet seemed to move incredibly quickly. We each got fifteen minutes of batting - and my sole victory whilst bowling to him was getting him to leave one
Batting went ok. I was a bit tighter perhaps, because my neck was (literally and metaphorically) at the back of my mind. But one of the bowlers had a very shiny new ball, and was getting some bend - so it was a tougher test.
Fun

A couple of days ago, I blogged about the return of the Amazon link into the website footer. All seemed well - in the space of 2-3 days, it had earned in excess of a fiver. That might not seem a lot, but an extra £50-£100 per month can make the difference.
Anyway... I got an automated email today saying "We’ve now reviewed your application to the Associates Program. Unfortunately, it did not meet our program requirements. As a result, we have closed the account under which you had been temporarily approved. Why? We noticed that you are not using tags associated with your store ID in any of the Amazon Special Links you have created on your Site As a result of this, we were unable to determine the source of traffic. This is in violation of our Program Policies..." zzzzz.
Despite me using one of the recommended cut-and-paste snippets from the Amazon website, and despite the fact that it was clearly generating clicks and revenue, they pulled the plug. It sounds like something is broken with the way they assess sites.
I am undeterred. I have signed up again, and this time, I have added a product link to the footer. It's the lovely Fitbit Charge 3 that our Member of the Month nominees are in with a chance of winning. It's definitely there, right?
Let's see what happens. Thanks to everyone that's made a purchase so far
