£79.99 off the bottom line

9:44pm, 30 May 2019
Fetcheveryone has very few fixed costs, and I like to keep it that way. Today I got rid of £79.99 per year by cancelling my annually-renewing subscription to Microsoft Office. For the last six months I've been using Thunderbird as my email client instead of Outlook, and I've done some playing with OpenOffice today, and found it to be a more-than-adequate replacement for Excel, which was the most important consideration of all. I'm not exactly a Word power user, and I don't have any call for Powerpoint - so it was nice to be able to shed one of our fixed costs :-)

I pay a monthly subscription for Photoshop, and I think that might be a bit harder to replace - but I'll maybe try downloading an Open Source equivalent and see if I can get my head round it. I am so used to Photoshop though.

This isn't just a money-saving exercise - although frugality is appealing - I'm also thinking ahead to what I might do when my Mac laptop finally dies. Admittedly it's showing no signs of it just now. I'd like the freedom to be portable enough to switch to a Linux system. There's something very Matrix-y about being self-sufficient in Linux :-)

I had a weird dream last night. I bumped into an old boss in a coffee shop. In real life he was always very shrewd and intimidating to me as a 25yo, but he'd metamorphosed into some sort of Gus Fring hybrid. He said his name was KSI, which might mean something if you're under 20. Somehow I got invited to his offices for a potential job working on his new software. I turned up, and the room was full of dozens of very colourful monitors, each showing different games - they were building a new game, and trying to study the successful elements of popular ones.

Working at that job IRL gave me a healthy dose of imposter syndrome. There were lots of extremely studious people who didn't seem to have a sense of humour, and I had to do a lot of surreptitious googling to even take part in a lot of conversations. Luckily I eventually found a group of people I could get on with. My proudest moment was teaching a hard-working Bulgarian the phrase "can't be arsed" and hearing him using it. I got made redundant after a year in the job, when their major client cut their consultant numbers. I sang all the way home.

Bit of a meander :-)

Here's a usability conundrum for those of you still awake. Feature 182

- fetcheveryone.com/featurevoting - calls for links in the 'Monthly Totals' of your training log to our colourful monthly summary: fetcheveryone.com/training-month.php It's had 37 upvotes and no downvotes.

In itself, this would be easy to do. A glasses icon underneath each monthly mileage total would fulfil the vanilla brief. But it causes a few issues: (1) the monthly totals end up being much taller to accommodate an extra icon; (2) the monthly mileage numbers link through to a page of the log containing the training entries for that month. It feels like it would be confusing to have a glasses icon that implies "look at me", just below it.

I'm curious to see whether there are any suggestions for how to make this work in an intuitive way. See what I mean?

  • I used to use Thunderbird and found it pretty good. But as I moved my main email address to gmail I realised the gmail web client was actually better. YMMV of course.

Probably more relevant though is that I used a Linux laptop as my main machine for several years running OpenOffice but actually now use google docs for my own stuff. I’m quite a fan of google sheets in particular.

Not only is the the freedom to use different operating systems nice, the freedom for it to be any machine is great :-) #cloud

  • I have thought on a couple of occasions that it would be good to have a forum where the pros and cons of implementing changes could be discussed. On the one hand I like the simplicity of the current system (propose, vote, resolve) but all the proposals are made without any knowledge of how difficult they may be to implement. The analogy in my head is, imagine asking a car manufacturer if you could have a fuel cap on each side of the car as none of us really want to drag the hose across the car.

I liked the idea, but I'd happily find the same info from the monthly summary. Maybe the option to look up a specific month in the summary page instead, achieves the same thing? For all I know, we can already do that and I've not noticed.

Sorry for the long comment! Keep up the great work :-)

So I'll ask instead, how is the Google maps thing going? Avoiding large bills? I seldom use it now but did the other day when I needed a couple of satellite views on something. Does a map call, then a satellite call count as two chargeable calls? What if I then zoom, or move, the map?

At the moment (unless I’m being really dumb, and haven’t found it) the only way to get the summary is from the link on the home page, which, at least on mobile view, is quite far down the page. Competition

5:11pm, 28 May 2019
Just in case you don't look at the home page, and you don't get the weekly Fetch email, there's a competition on the parkrun reviews page:

fetcheveryone.com/parkrun.php

In short - make sure you've added a review or a route to our collection by midday Monday June 3rd, and I'll pick someone at random to win some lovely 361 Nemesis daps :-)

Pip pip.

PS Before someone asks :-) if you've already added a review, you're already in the draw. But go make sure you've added as many parkruns as you can - there's a leaderboard to be bossed :-)

  • I haven't looked at that tbh. By my reckoning, there are 615 in the UK, and we've added reviews for 494 (80%) of those. That currently leaves 56 overseas parkruns - so that's where the big shortfall is. But I have a couple of unreviewed ones within my 50 mile circle - Barclay and Bicester. In case you haven't spotted, you can see these by looking at the 'reviews' column when viewing your nearest 50.

parkrun reviews - now with routes

8:01pm, 26 May 2019
If you go to this page:

fetcheveryone.com/parkrun.php

you'll see your nearest 50 parkruns.

The ones you've added reviews for will show up in bold with a green tick after them. That's not new :-)

If you click one of the events, there's a new box titled 'Matching Routes' (it's on the right on desktop; or scroll down a bit on mobile).

In that box, I pick out any public routes with an EXACT name match for that parkrun (not case-sensitive though, let's not take the p/P) - so you can quickly check out the route for that event.

There will be some parkruns that don't have any matching routes - and here's where you can be a big help. You can either:

(a) plot out the route using our route plotting tool:
fetcheveryone.com/routes-add.php

or (b) even quicker, find one of your training entries where you ran the route, and look for the 'Save Route as...' box on the map.

In both cases, REMEMBER TO MAKE THE ROUTE PUBLIC, and save it using the exact name, as listed in our reviews :-)

Thanks peeps :-)

I put in a new feature request for an enhancement asking for dates for routes or use of the matching algorithms to group the routes into alternatives, but your way works as well I have some alternative routes already in my routes which I’ve excluded by putting a description in brackets eg (old), (winter) etc.

And I've also added a little check to exclude routes that are less than 4.5k or more than 5.5k (to exclude stuff like 'Bedford parkrun followed by run home').

Fix It Friday; Project Joker Week 2; and some shout outs.

1:02pm, 24 May 2019
A bit of a compendium blog this week.

Fix It Friday

The Server
The big question over the last couple of weeks has been "how's the server doing?". It's been just over a week since the server went down for its operating system upgrade, and I've been watching it closely. I measure the server load automatically every five minutes, and the average load over the last 24 hours is 0.85, with only 7 readings of 2.0 or more. In simple terms, it's kicking ass.

We *did* have a 20 minute window of pain yesterday, from about 9.40am 'til 10am - but this wasn't the server. It was a wider internet problem that was affecting various websites. This fascinating mix of metaphor and nerd from our hosting provider: "there were a number of UDP floods across UK peering points. We've worked with our upstream providers and other ISPs to suggest some black-holing which, we hope, should have helped significantly." So (ss) some a-hole was attempting to clog up a bit of the internet.

Features
We've now had our 200th feature proposal - I'm really pleased how it's working. Looking at the site stats, every time I sort out a feature from the list, there's a nice little bump in traffic, as you all follow the notification to read what's changed. And hopefully whilst you're there, you get round to voting for any features you haven't decided on. I could put little red x's on them, if that helps ;-)

I'll run through some of the recent changes:

FEATURE 164
Drell asked for better tracking of WAVA bests. On your user profile, go to 'Race Times'. There's a new toggle above the list of best times. Use it to switch to show Best WAVA for each year.

FEATURE 155
RunningRonnie asked for the ability to move from one training session to the next without having to go back to the training log. I've added 'Prev' and 'Next' buttons to each of your training entries now.

FEATURE 165
Wine Legs wanted a clearer indicator of *which* feature had been resolved when she clicked her notification. The relevant one now shows up in pink because why not.

FEATURE 158
chunkywizard wanted to filter his race portfolio to find races quickly. There's a little box in the column headings now, where you can start typing characters to filter your list. Handy if you've got dozens of races.

FEATURE 86
Diogenes wanted to tag whereabouts on a route a photo was taken. He says it's slightly less wonderful than he imagined. For shame ;-)

FEATURE 102
Sigh asked that when he views a route, and puts his mouse on the elevation graph, he'd like a dot on the map to show where that bit is. Sorted.

FEATURE 113
PeteFastFeet wanted better back and forward navigation when viewing a month in the training log. If you click 'Edit' in the little white box that contains your current viewing date range, there are links to the previous and next months. Previously, the only options were "This month" and "Last month" - but now they move with you - so if you're on January, they'll say December and February.

Other Fixes
1) I've adjusted the search, so that you choose the type of search you want to do before pressing Go. Lots of you use the search to quickly find a user, or a race. It felt like unnecessary work for the server to search ALL of the search areas every time a request was made.

2) This was a bit of a sporadic one - occasionally I'd get a report from one of you saying that your Garmin data came across with no map, no HR data, no cadence etc. On reimporting, it would be completely fine. I eventually sussed it. It was affecting 1 in 256 training entries. Technical stuff: we store the GPS data in a nested directory structure, with 256 top level directories, each holding 256 sub-directories. The reason for this comes down to making reading and writing of data as quick as possible. Except... there were only 255 top level directories; so therefore 1 in 256 entries were disappearing down a hole.

Shout Outs
The following Fetchies have made a contribution to the running costs of the site over the last week. They're all now enjoying using Fetch with no ads, which feels much calmer. If you're already a voluntary donator, do feel free to switch your ads off - there's a link under Profile > Settings - I won't mind if you all go ahead and do it. And if you're not someone who donates yet, please consider sparing the cost of a pint per month to support your favourite running site. Click some names around the site, and you'll see just how many people do support us. Thanks all :-)

fetcheveryone.com/t-16278818
5 x 0.5mi, with 3 min recoveries. Last one was hard and I had to slow down a wee bit (see training entry for gory details), but overall I was very pleased :-)

Wednesday - Long Run
fetcheveryone.com/t-16283879
Katie went for an evening swim at Box End, so I ran out to meet her, and threw in a couple of extra bits to turn it into a long run. I got a nice heckle from Wine Legs ("Go on Ian, give it some WELLY!") - I bet your neighbours loved that ;-) By and large, a relaxing run, although the last 1.5 miles were a bit rollercoastery.

Friday - Threshold
fetcheveryone.com/t-16290039
Set out for a mile warm up beforehand, wondering whether my legs would be up to it. Really chuffed with the consistency, and sticking another six minutes on last week's effort. I was also reminded of Deegee's piece for the podcast about having little goals as well as big ones - so the extra bit of distance meant I sneaked past May 2016, May 2013, May 2007 and May 2006 to make this my second best May ever (with a week left to take down May 2018!) fetcheveryone.com/training-month.php

Weekly Miles = 18.3
Z5 (<7:30/mi) = 3.2mi

Z4 (<7:50/mi) = 1.9mi

Z3 (<8:10/mi) = 1.1mi

Z2 (<9:00/mi) = 4.2mi

Z1 (<10:00/mi) = 6.2mi

Z0 (>10:00/mi) = 1.7mi

(Trying to do my long runs in zone 1, threshold in zone 4, and intervals in zone 5)

That's probably it for my running this week, unless The Boy has a mega sleep-in on Sunday morning.

Kit
See my previous blog for the bits of kit I've got left in the cupboard. The list is up-to-date, I've been editing it as the orders come in.

The bonus ball

11:49am, 19 May 2019
I have to update yesterday's weekly figures, because I got another run in this morning. Katie got up for a 7am swim at Box End, and as she walked to her car, I legged it after her in my dressing gown (sorry neighbours, I wasn't expecting the sudden gust of wind) and threw my Fetch hoodie at her.

So I got to take a leisurely five miler along the river; through the middle of Great Denham parkrun; and then a very brief bit of speedy road before sitting lakeside and watching the swimmers. There's a ladder where they climb out, with an unfortunate metal bar that has to be ducked under. The owners have wrapped thick foam around it, and I got to see first hand why, as one poor bloke climbed out of the water and hit himself square in the face.

Weekly Miles = 22.3
Z5 (<7:30/mi) = 3.1mi
Z4 (<7:50/mi) = 1.0mi
Z3 (<8:10/mi) = 1.1mi
Z2 (<9:00/mi) = 5.0mi
Z1 (<10:00/mi) = 9.5mi
Z0 (>10:00/mi) = 2.6mi

Average server load in last 24 hours = 0.844 :-)
Peak load in last 24 hours = 2.6 :-)

  • It’s the same server, just an updated operating system. So the numbers are definitely comparable. The old OS imposed limits on how much RAM the database could use - which meant that during busy times, the database would have to do lots of writing to disk. The new OS allows more RAM to be utilised by the database, so it’s way more efficient.

Project Joker - Week 1

12:04pm, 18 May 2019
This week I've managed to do all three of my PJ sessions :-) I used my parkrun time of 22:30 from Marston Vale parkrun about a month back as my benchmark, and I reckon if I could get under 22 in 10 weeks time, that'd be enough encouragement to keep me doing this.

Tuesday Long Run:
fetcheveryone.com/t-16255616

Thursday was Intervals (10 x 400):
fetcheveryone.com/t-16262720
(that only shows the last six, because my watch was playing up)

Today was Tempo Run (25 mins at threshold pace):
fetcheveryone.com/t-16268951

I'm pretty pleased with that as a start, although I think in the coming week, I'll change the sessions round, so I'm not doing the two speedier runs so close together.

This is all well and good, but the key is going to be stringing together a series of weeks like this, so no pats on the back yet. I've lost track of the number of times I've got back on this particular horse, only to end up going over the horsey handlebars into the bushes. Sometimes it's a little twang; sometimes it's school holidays making it harder to fit stuff in; bad weather; code problems; or a bit of apathy here and there. I'll try to post my end-of-the-week stats here over the next nine weeks of PJ; and hopefully that'll encourage me to stay on target, like all good X-Wing pilots :-)

Weekly Miles = 17
Z5 (<7:30/mi) = 3.1mi
Z4 (<7:50/mi) = 0.9mi
Z3 (<8:10/mi) = 0.9mi
Z2 (<9:00/mi) = 4.1mi
Z1 (<10:00/mi) = 6.0mi
Z0 (>10:00/mi) = 2.0mi

Average server load in last 24 hours = 0.83 :-)
Peak load in last 24 hours = 2.91 :-)

Fix It Friday

10:02am, 17 May 2019
I know you'll forgive me for not writing a Fix It Friday blog for a while, but it felt a bit unnecessary to explain what I've been trying to fix :-)

I can see from the comments on yesterday's blog that it was a bit too geeky. In short, I'm watching the server performance like a hawk, and it's doing really well. Perhaps that's all I needed to say :-) Perhaps you can see that for yourself anyway :-)

I also need to catch up with my "list of people who've made a contribution to the site" thing that I do. Here are the lovely people who've donated over the last two weeks, despite the site not exactly being at its best:

sleepylion
Petefastfeet
tpjh201
riggsy99
Raemond
mlmaclean
shineyheadmike
Daddy Shark
There We Are Then
SusanP
dianes22

Thanks to you all, but also thanks to everyone who's already making a contribution, however big or small. Your willingness to stick by me and the website is really wonderful during difficult moments. If you're a serial "ask me next month" person, maybe now would be good. As you've seen, we have the occasional sticky moment, but we battle through stuff. A few quid each month (the average is about £3.50), gives you a site without Google Ads (Profile > Settings if you've not already done that); a shiny gold background on your user profile; and gives me that little bit of extra breathing space to consider stuff like server upgrades, extra hamsters etc.

Here's the link: fetcheveryone.com/invite.php

Now then. Time to get back to tinkering. If you haven't seen it yet, check out Feature Voting: fetcheveryone.com/featurevoting - it's proving really useful for me, and it's hopefully a good way to give you folks the site you want.

Probably Long Eaton parkrun tomorrow morning, if any of you are nearby :-)

A quick update on the server

2:00pm, 16 May 2019
After yesterday, I thought you lot were owed a blog with a little update on the server.

Here's a screenshot I took from the server monitoring tool yesterday:

Those three 'load average' numbers represent the average server load over the last minute; the last five minutes; and the last fifteen minutes. Pretty much anything above 10 means our server is starting to have difficulties. By 25, it's largely unresponsive (in my experience). And 69? :-) I've never seen the load get that high ever. But the fried breakfast I cooked on the lid was lovely.

Since yesterday evening, with the new-and-improved 64 bit server in place, I've been running my own little experiment. I've put a little script on the server that reports the current load. And I've set up a Raspberri Pi on my desk to call that script every five mins, and capture the results. Before you write in, the server company do sturdier stuff than this - but I was just interested in capturing some stats for my own benefit.

I've therefore measured the load 226 times since I put the script in place yesterday evening. The one minute load has been less than 1 (yes, one) on 136 samples; and less than 2 on 204 samples. The peak one minute load was 4.11 just after 9pm yesterday evening. The five minute load (which by definition will smooth out those little peaks) had a highest value of 3.29, and was less than 2 on 208 out of the 226 samples.

It's also worth bearing in mind that we do actually put extra load on the server during the UK night time. The majority of "more than 2" readings were between midnight and 2am.

I'll be tracking these readings for the next little while, to see how the machine is doing - and I liked some of the suggestions about putting some kind of "server status" on the help page. For now, I'll just do the occasional blog to explain where it's at.

I've also asked the question (posed by Dio) about why we don't have a more resilient set of disks on the server, in order to minimise outages. The answer is probably going to be in pounds, but I will let you know what the server company says :-)

All good at Fetch Towers. I hope you're having a good Thursday. We did intervals this morning. Toot toot!

There's different rules for different industries for crisis management. Eg pilots (should) learn their priority : Aviate (get the thing flying again), Navigate (don't fly into a mountain), Communicate (put the passengers out of their misery) (Hmm, could have phrased that better)

Web hosting and app management : Communicate, Communicate, Communicate
(and of course, under promise and over deliver ... if you think it will be an hour, say 3 hrs. If you think 5 mins, say 15)

  • Oh - and I found this ... those numbers Fetch quoted..
(since at first I thought it was utilisation %, and the numbers sounded iffy)

A single-core CPU is like a single lane of traffic. Imagine you are a bridge operator ... sometimes your bridge is so busy there are cars lined up to cross. You want to let folks know how traffic is moving on your bridge. A decent metric would be how many cars are waiting at a particular time. If no cars are waiting, incoming drivers know they can drive across right away. If cars are backed up, drivers know they're in for delays.

So, Bridge Operator, what numbering system are you going to use? How about:

0.00 means there's no traffic on the bridge at all. In fact, between 0.00 and 1.00 means there's no backup, and an arriving car will just go right on.

1.00 means the bridge is exactly at capacity. All is still good, but if traffic gets a little heavier, things are going to slow down.

over 1.00 means there's backup. How much? Well, 2.00 means that there are two lanes worth of cars total -- one lane's worth on the bridge, and one lane's worth waiting. 3.00 means there are three lane's worth total -- one lane's worth on the bridge, and two lanes' worth waiting. Etc.

There is a good service operating

2:27pm, 9 May 2019
Well, you lot are all lovely - but I knew that already. Thank you so much for all your supportive comments on my previous blog. It helps a lot - and it's one of the reasons I know I'm in a very fortunate position. It's one of those cliches when people say "I couldn't do this without you", but in this case, it's absolute fact.

The good news is that the replacement disk drive that was installed yesterday around 6pm seems to have sorted the problem. I'd spent a week chasing my tail trying to optimise my software, but it was a hardware issue.

Since then, I've been monitoring the training data that comes across to us from Garmin (because dozens of these files were failing). We've received 1384 files today, and to the best of my knowledge, none of them have failed. Win :-)

I've also contacted the server people to ask questions about drives, as I believe this is the second drive failure in the last 12 months - and both of these resulted in some downtime. It was my understanding that we had duplicate live drives - if one failed, the other would take over seamlessly. I'll be completely honest, server hardware and configuration is not my area of expertise - but that's also why we have the server package we do, so that all this is/should be covered. The site has been with this company for 12 years now, and on the whole I think they have done a great job. But I feel like I need some questions answered today.

You'll be pleased to know that I had a nice evening with Katie yesterday, on our second run-through of Breaking Bad. And I might also have given myself a bit of leeway on my 'no snacking or drinking' plan for May, which was nice. This morning I got out for a run in the gaps between the drizzle; and I'm just heading out to collect The Boy from school.

Thanks Fetchies. You're awesome.

And the customer doesn't have to pay for all that, it's built in. It's more like old school mainframe and your virtual "server" is actually just a lump of code, not a physical anything. It's massively abstracted from the hardware. Anyhoo, enough of this techie geekery! :-) G

Oof.

4:16pm, 8 May 2019
I've spent the whole day trying to sort out the performance issues on the server. I was supposed to be having the second of two days off today with Katie. She's been awesome, and cool with it all.

I still haven't really got to the bottom of things, and there's some weird behaviour. If you're relying on our auto-import from Garmin, please check that all your runs/rides/swims from the last few days have come across. And if they haven't, you can try the following to export a FIT file from the Garmin site, to import to Fetch: fetcheveryone.com/feedback-faq-garmin.php

However, some users have noticed that FIT files aren't importing right, which (it seems) comes down to something in the bit of third party code that decodes those FIT files. So if you're struggling to make that work, please accept my apologies, and know that I'm focusing on nothing but getting this sorted.

Head's hurting a bit now though. I know that individually, you're probably all fine with it, and could wait a day or two if it came down to it. But collectively, it's my responsibility to keep everything ok, and that's been pretty stressful today.

I've plenty to be grateful for, there are plenty worse situations I could be in, and I know how lucky I am.

Deep breath. Oof. Big oof.

If you're wandering round the forum, and you see someone having site problems, do me a solid and point them at my blog. Thanks, lovely Fetchies.

Or is that just more money? Most hosters using virtual servers do high availability as standard. Or maybe that's just at the big corporate level that I work with. The amount of manual effort that your hoster seems to expend with having to do physical swap outs, a more virtual offering might actually be cheaper for them as well as better for you (and us!). I did several blogs this morning, just to test some issues with adding blogs. There was nothing wrong with our blog code as such, but the server was just pretty busy.

We've had a couple of mentions recently that have increased the number of sign ups to the site. Obviously, this is great on one hand - but it also means our server is handling a greater load.

Will continue to do what I can to speed things up. Thank you all for your patience and good humour.

Fix It Friday: Stuff that came to me in dreams

12:21pm, 3 May 2019
Morning folks :-)

It's your regular Friday round-up of what I've been working on around the site this week. I've been really enjoying seeing how the Feature Requests tool is working. You can take a look at it here: fetcheveryone.com/featurevoting

I've also put links to it on our Feedback / Help page. Getting feedback from all of you is, IMHO, one of the reasons for the longevity of the site (15 years this September!). It's sometimes difficult to keep up with it, but I do try.

The stuff I receive through feedback broadly falls into two categories: (1) it's broken, or (2) it would be better if... [something].

I reckon category 1 should be my priority, because YOU dear reader are already here, and it's my job to make sure things run smoothly for you. But it's always good to be thinking about category 2 as well - to make sure the site continues to offer you a bit of an adventure, and new things to explore.

Responding to new feature requests up 'til recently has largely been a case of either just getting on and doing it (if the request is small), or making a note in an ever-growing private list, and eventually getting back to the person who asked, to say that I would have a good think about how and when I could do it.

Hopefully you'll agree that the stuff I do week on week does constitute quite a bit from both categories; along with a bit from category 3 ("stuff that came to me in dreams").

But the new system for category 2 stuff has the following advantages:

(a) the 250 character limit means the point has to be made clearly
(b) I get a whole bunch of other opinions on the proposed feature
(c) those who provide suggestions get some instant feedback.
(d) it feels like it's going to reduce some of my workload.

The stuff that makes its way to the top of the list* won't always be guaranteed to happen. For example, I'm strongly against editing on the forum, comments etc. Some of the mistakes we've all made over the years have been fun. I'm not sure Is It Prague? would be a thing if we had the ability to go back and edit. Airbrushing is for supermarket running magazines. Sorry.

* aside: I fully agree that we need some filter and sort options, so you can see what you've not voted for etc.

But in general, I can see that if I implement feature XYZ, it will make some people happy. And if I can do that in a way that won't impact the people who voted against it, or doesn't compromise what the site's about, then everyone's a winner.

This Week
I've not just been sitting watching the list. I've done some stuff too :-)

1) On Saturday night, one of our https certificates was complaining that it couldn't renew. If you were up late on Saturday, you might have got a bunch of warnings when trying to view the site. The server people put a quick patch in place to resolve this, and then on Monday night, we upgraded the server operating system to resolve the initial problem.

2) On Tuesday morning, I awoke to a very slow Fetcheveryone. The server people told me that this was a wider problem (small relief, nothing I've done), which they eventually got under control. However, it came at a time when lots of you were logging your morning runs - so quite a few of the auto-imports from Garmin would have failed around this time. If you need to reimport a run, you can find a 'How To' guide here: fetcheveryone.com/feedback-faq-garmin.php

3) On Wednesday morning, I noticed that the site was pretty sluggish. I think initially this was because a bunch of Garmin imports from Tuesday were getting retried. So we effectively had double traffic from them whilst that all got resolved.

4) But even after that settled, there was still some pretty poor responsiveness when posting on the forum. This was one for me :-) Each post in the forum is stored in our database, and each page is made by sewing together up to 10 posts. But we then store each forum page as a chunk of HTML in an individual text file. It's quicker for viewers, because our code can just grab the text file, rather than asking the database for all the relevant posts. Still with me? :-) Good. Every time there's a new post, we remove that text file, so we can remake it with the new post added.

However... if you have too many chunks of HTML stored, it becomes a bigger overhead to find and remove/update the relevant files. This was the case here. We were holding on to cached pages that were over a month old. The likelihood is that most of these weren't being looked at (at least not regularly), so all they were doing was slowing stuff down.

I put something in place that means any cached forum page older than 20 minutes will get deleted. That means our cache has about 200-300 files to juggle, rather than the 91834 files it *was* juggling :-) Every day's a school day :-)

The good news is that I have some potential speed improvements to make elsewhere on the site, by making sure other caches have this balance right.

5) As part of the above, I was noticing lots of double posts on the forum. It turns out these are caused by a simple double click on the submit button. I've put stuff in place that will disable the submit button the moment it's pressed. Touch wood, this seems to have stopped it.

6) Ooh, is this why we get the occasional dodgy trade in Trader? Yes, I think so. I think I've closed that loophole (and hey, Trader players, get your heads together and sort out a feature request, then vote for it ;-) )

On then, to the significant stuff from the Feature Requests list...

FEATURE 32 Increase the gallery pic id field display, so the whole code is shown (now we've gone ast 99,999), and/or include a copy button.

FEATURE 20 Set a walking/hiking goal for the year (in the same way you can set run/bike/swim goals).

FEATURE 23
Photos work best of Fetch when they are in portrait format, but often countryside looks naturally better in landscape format. At the minute landscape photos are rendered to the width of the portrait ones. Any chance of a landscape photos option?
In this case, I've adjusted gallery so that wider-than-they-are-tall images get full screen (with comments below). Feel free to post new request if this doesn't cover it.

FEATURE 70
If you are viewing a month other than the current month in your training log, and you edit and save a particular entry, stop the log defaulting back to the current month once you have saved the changes.

---

And that's it for code fixes this week. I hope that all made sense. I just wanted to add this week's list of people who stepped up to join the ranks of Fetch supporters with either a one-off donation, or the setting up of a monthly amount. They're all awesome, just like you.

Have a great weekend all. Me and Katie will be around mile 22 (near Teardrop Lakes) of Milton Keynes Marathon on Monday with a box of bananas. Look out for us if you're there. Cheers.
