eL Bee! Abingdon - The Gory Details of a First Marathon 'Experience'

The whole reason for running Abingdon was a fact finding mission for me...
How fit am I
What does 26.2 miles actually feel like
What else do I need to look at such as nutrition and hydration
How will I recover from such exertions

and so on and so forth..

It was a nice day too - fed well before the race started and arrived (despite an inadvertent micros detour - remind me that I should LISTEN to my navigator when she knows the way better than I do!!) with enough time to do the toilet thing and hand in bags - as well as meet up with a whole load of Forumites in the Grandstand.

Very relaxed!!

In the absence of my trusty HRM the plan was to run at a pace that was easy enough to be able to be ridiculously verbose, but also for me to run in as efficient a way as possible.
That seems to be around 8 min/mile Pace - so that's what I did..

The first few miles were, of course nice and easy - and after having seen RichK twice - I mentioned to the girl I had been running alongside that it was amazing how he managed to remember everyone!!
It turned out that she was 'Mellifera' from Forum - and she was aiming for a time of 3:27
A quick calculation and I realised that we were likely to be running at about the same pace, but that she would probably leave me later on as I got tired - especially as I hadn't done enough training for any race - let alone a marathon. The first half marathon passed almost before I knew it - the pace was really comfortable, and I felt really rather good.. about 1:44 according to the clock at the roadside there

So far so good!!

A couple of miles later, Mellifera dropped back a bit - and I didn't see her again - I'm still not sure what happened.. but I didn't see her come past me later - Hmmmm!!

Miles 14,15,16, were absolutely fine too - saw RichK again at Mile 16 - He gets everywhere!!!!! - shouting encouragement and 'twas great to see a friendly face!

Mile 17 passed without incident - although I was starting to feel like I had done a bit of work by that point !!!!

Then in mile 18 I felt myself starting to slow - just a bit - but discernibly!! That's OK, I thought I was expecting that if was honest with myself. So I thought - lets just go with this and see how it goes... It was at this point that my breathing became heavier too - and if I'd had my HRM, I'm SURE I'd have seen a notable increase!!!!!
Miles 19 and 20 felt pretty much the same - slightly slower - a bit tired - slightly heavier breathing..
In fact - as I went past the 20 Mile marker I thought - Cumberland AC 2:59:43 4:25:24 4:25:24 46.64

GAZGIB Another marathon disaster started to go wrong at 15 when my legs just seized up. I had deliberately set off at a slow pace of sub 9:00 just to make sure I got all the way round without stopping. So was surpirised at what happene. I had to walk through the town, hoping to find a short cut back to Tilsey park, but at 18 I had run again for a bit so carried on to the final loop which I completed in a jog/walk combi effort. I Managed to run the last 2 miles continously as I realised that in not doing so it would have led to my worse ever time. Bracknell Forest Runners 3:51:08 4:34:42 4:34:42 44.38
Gobi Week after GSR but hope for a pb, feeling stronger than July

UPDATE

I was faster and stronger but come 18 miles I started to tighten up. Focus has very much been the GSR and a lack of long runs and colds these last few weeks just came in to haunt me

that aside I'm stoked as another huge PB Cannock & Stafford AC 2:38:57 3:07:29 3:15:00 3:07:29 65.03

paskha First time doing this marathon. I was really hoping for a PB, but I had THREE pit stops - and I ran too fast to mile 17 (9:30 min miling) started tightening up, knew a PB was out, so enjoyed the company around me. It was a lovely day, had met lots of forumites the previous evg and stayed in a wonderful old monastery type place, which turned out to be an imp archaeological site ... Ronnie Wibbley Sometimes in life strange things happen with no logical explanation. So it was this morning in Abingdon when, blatantly unfit after a summer of illness and no running at all for over a month, I managed a better time than I've ever done when fit.

Mind you, at mile 18 my legs had had enough and told me so in no uncertain terms, and from the 20 mile mark I was just hanging on... I think the only reason I didn't stop with 4 miles to go was that it was too far to contemplate walking back. With a couple of miles to go I realised that I stood a chance of getting sub-4 if I kept staggering in a forward direction, and fortunately enough my legs kept from cramping up until ten seconds after getting my medal.

This is a very nice course with several scenic features en route, even not counting the turkey and pig farms. Marshals were all friendly and encouraging, and the cup of tea afterwards was the best of my life... even if I did have to be helped up the stairs to get to it.
