After the match on Saturday, I shook the hands of 21 other players (as did everyone else tbf). And now, three days later I am full of cold 🤒
It’s my first cold since 2019. By and large I am a mostly solitary being, sitting in my little tin box coding every day, and hanging out with K in the evenings. I feel like one of those South American tribespeople that get discovered in rainforests every now and then - all great until they get exposed to cold germs and they all get wiped out.
So bear with me for a day or two as I ham it up big style 🙃 Signing off for another nose blow.

I played cricket on Sunday
For the first time this season, I've got into the Sunday 2nd XI. In my two previous outings, I'd been picked as a 'making up the numbers' player for the Saturday 2s, and the Sunday 1s - with no major involvement in the game as a non-bowling lower order player.
But finally, I managed to talk myself into batting at number 5 for our game against Elstow
After little burst of pre-match rain, we won the toss and fielded first on what turned out to be a very warm afternoon. I had my Garmin on, and clocked up 8.8km over the course of 40 overs - that's a new record.
The outfield was brown and dry, and a bit uneven, so the ball was travelling around pretty quick. I dropped a catch - but I'm ok with that overall, as it was a fairly difficult chance - running backwards, one outstretched hand, got one finger on it. Two of the opposition batters got fifties, and others hung round with them, so we ended up with a total of 190 to beat off our 40 overs. That's a nice neat rate of 4.75 runs per over to score at.
We started pretty well, with our openers scoring 67 runs before the first wicket fell in the 13th over, at just a smidge quicker than the required rate. But as often happens in all levels of cricket, one wicket can bring more. Fast forward another 7 overs, and we'd added 8 runs and lost two more wickets. 75/3 off 20 overs - both openers and our number 3 out; me wandering out to meet my buddy Laurence with him in single figures and me yet to face a ball.
And then it went well
Me and him added another 54 runs over the next 9 overs, and we were enjoying ourselves. In the gap between overs, we had a little chat and I said we should make sure we carried on batting right to the end and win the game together. He was out next ball
My next batting buddy was Luke - and we added another 29 runs between us before he tried to nurdle a straight one and was given out LBW. And then captain Rob came out to join me, with the score on 158/5 off 34 overs. Six more overs to knock off 32 runs.
The opening bowler had come back on by this point (it's common to bring the first bowlers back to try and close out the game), but this one was a bit erratic, and I ended up playing my favourite shot of the day, guiding a ball that was heading towards my shoulders down to third man for a four. And a couple of balls later, there was a nice clap from the pavilion, as I'd reached my 50
A little raise of the bat, and a little smile to myself, but then back at it.
A couple of good overs for us left us with 18 balls left, and only six more runs needed. The opposition captain brought himself on to bowl. I made the mistake of trying to play back to one that kept a bit low (generally speaking, stuff keeping low is a staple of village cricket, so you should always expect it). I tried to hit it towards square leg, missed it, and it clattered onto my pads and into the stumps
It would have been nice to be there at the end, but I was delighted to have made a good contribution to the team.
The final runs were knocked off, with me still not switched off, and calling to myself (yes, no, wait!) from the boundary edge as the ball got hit around. We won! I got some really nice comments, lots of handshakes, and a hopefulness that I've given a decent account of myself now.
Here's the scorebook (no hi-tec stuff at this ground). The neatness (or lack of) is a bit triggering to me as a child scorer (a bit like a child actor, but you get free cucumber sandwiches), but the numbers next to my name are very pleasing
The team are now second in our league (Division 6 of the Bedfordshire Cricket League), equal on points with the leaders Cople, but they have a better run rate. Sixty of our points come from two games against lowly Blunham who were unable to field a side - so we're perhaps a bit inflated, but we'll take it.

Fingers crossed for selection next week against the titans of the Flitwick 4th XI

I have decided to build a new version of Fetchpoint, and for now at least I am calling it Fetchworld.
The original Fetchpoint was first launched in 2011 - and I don't know of anything else that was like it at the time. The closest thing I was aware of at the time was geocaching - but nothing virtual like this. It predated Pokemon Go by five years
As with any code project, what started as a relatively clean chunk of code has taken on various bug fixes, workarounds and the code equivalent of gaffer tape and string. And it gets to the point where it is sometimes easier to knock down and rebuild, rather than try to build an extension. But if you're a Fetchpoint fan, don't worry - I will leave the original game untouched: fetcheveryone.com/game-fetchpoint.php for as long as people want to play it.
But yes, I would like to build a new version, with some exciting changes to make the game more varied and fun.
It was my hope when building the original game that there would be a lot of players in proximity to each other. Whilst this is true for populous areas like London, it looks like a lot of players have never had the experience of competing directly with other players. So the key difference with Fetchworld will be that everyone will play on the same map. So for example, the Magic Boots of Destiny† will be two miles north of *every* player; the Cockerel of Likely Doom† will patrol the south west; etc. So all players will be chasing the same items at the same time. Wherever you set your home point, your items will come with you.
The original game has the concept of a home circle, with a mile radius around you. Existing players have rightly pointed out that if there are a couple of hundred players, this circle will be fiercely competitive. Yep. But in my head, I am seeing a *much* bigger playing area. Instead of the focus being on a one mile radius, I'm imagining a grid that covers a hundred square miles (10mi X 10mi). So there'll be plenty of opportunity for surprises to be hidden on the map. And before you wonder whether you're gonna have to start plotting 20 mile treks to get to the edge of the grid and back, no you won't. I have some game mechanics in mind that will allow you to unlock parts of the grid so that you can 'fast travel' there. Too complicated? Don't worry, just stick to the basics.
With freedom to rebuild, I have the opportunity to introduce new aspects of the game. One of the key things is the idea of an inventory. Rather than just collecting items that add to your score, there will be things you can pick up for later use. Find a matching pair of the Socks of Undeniable Cosiness† and you could score double points on your next ten outings. Collect six different Fruits of Dubious Provenance† and you could make a potion that makes you immune to the Thorns of Regretful Curiosity† so you can make your way to The Trough of Endless Crumbs†. That sort of thing.
I will also be better placed to lob in themed items for different times of the year. Like the existing Easter eggs, but things like pumpkins, beach balls, Christmas trees, love hearts etc. And there may well be collectibles too - like Panini stickers, but with rare ones hidden around the grid. For example, there are currently 65 Fetch 'Illuminati' (that's the folks who have got the badge for a million page views). I could scatter these around the grid for you to find - some easy, some harder.
To add to the mystery and encourage exploration, I plan to shroud large parts of the grid in darkness. By travelling around it, you'll dispel the darkness and reveal items - some good, some not so good.
With lots of players, interaction between them comes to the fore. Who needs traffic lights when you've taken control of a Fortress of Unyielding Pettiness†, and earn points from anyone that strays too close?
With one grid for all, the concept of marking areas as inaccessible disappears. It may be inaccessible to you without some jiggery-pokery, but not to others. But there will be some items on the map that you ideally *need* to access. If your personally-assigned Beetle of Mild Alarm† gets too close to your house it will ransack your inventory, so you need to put it in its place. In this case, it'll be possible to say "I can't reach it", and the little bugger will respawn somewhere else.
So far I have the bare bones of some code, so it might take a bit of time to get a working prototype - but I have started a thread so that those who are interested can follow for updates.
fetcheveryone.com/forum/fetchworld-63701/
Please hit the watch button on the thread and feel free to ask questions or suggest stuff. I'll share more when I can
† I haven't decided on the items in the game yet, so these are just some random things to wet your whistle.
‡ 28.28 miles actually, to get to the corner of a 10x10 grid, but let's not get distracted.

Exciting stuff... I have had a wish for Fetchpoint for several years, but never made it a feature request because it would be a bit of a rewrite while also being unnoticeable to many players, but maybe it's worth mentioning now. In a nutshell, I live in an area of very iffy mobile signal, and I wish the marker loading routine was more resilient to the internet connection dropping out - when moving the map (deliberately or not), the improved routine would make an asynchronous request, and *only* remove the currently displayed markers if and when a response is received successfully. As it is, I can be out in the Forest chasing bugs, and I move the map and lose visibility of where everything is until I find signal again and refresh the page. The first Everyone Day happened in June 2022, and we've been doing them ever since - on the Sunday nearest to the longest day of the year.
Sadly, we lost Oscar very suddenly in March 2024. We now refer to it as Oscar's Everyone Day - it's dedicated to him and the inspiration he gave us to come together and get moving.
As always, we go with the Sunday nearest the summer solstice, so this year it's Sunday June 22nd.
If you need to put a reminder in your race calendar, I've made a race listing:
fetcheveryone.com/races/oscar-apos-s-everyone-day-11428358
But it's not really a race. It's about recording as much distance as you can on the day. You don't need to do anything special to log it, just make sure it's in your training log.
A totaliser will appear on the site in the lead up to the event, and on Oscar's Everyone Day it will display the total distance we all cover on the day. It doesn't matter what it is - whether it's running, walking, cycling, swimming, or any other exercise that produces distance. You might notice the figures go above zero before the day begins, but that's because our antipodean Fetchies get a timezone head start on the bulk of us.
Oscar's hope was to promote Fetcheveryone, and the benefits of exercise in general. So if you can persuade family or friends out for a walk or a bike ride - or anything that gets folks moving - that'd be lovely. Even if they don't want to faff about joining Fetch, you can still explain why we're doing it, and why it's important.
In previous years, we usually get about three quarters of the way round the earth - hopefully one day we'll complete a full circuit.
Here's a thread where you can share your plans, adventures, and encouragement as we go past arbitrary round numbers:
fetcheveryone.com/forum/oscar-s-everyone-day---sunday-june-22nd-2025-63073
Thank you. RIP Oscar.

How lovely. We're always up on the West Highland Way race, so Fri to Sun is a very busy full 2.5 days of activity. Plenty to log. Will try and see if we can get some others to do so too. RIP OtG.HappyG(rrr)

Comments
That is one of the reasons why I don't shake hands.
Hope you recover soon.
I’ve never been a great fan of hand shaking (I never know whether to look at the hand or the face of my co-shaker. If I go for eye contact the hands end up in the wrong place!!). I’m even less of a hugger and kisser….
These tendencies have been reinforced since Covid.
