Race Distance poll

Here's one for you - which race distance do you think you're most accomplished at?

Background: I'm looking at my WAVA scores for 5k, 10k, 10M and Half - and they fall away like a ski slope. I'm in the process of going big with the data, so I'll share some more info in the weekly newsletter* when I've put it together; but I'm interested to get an idea of how you all feel about your 'ideal' race distance for best results.

  • Hm. Difficult. Define accomplished.... my WAVAs, like yours, are better for shorter distances, but I feel better running at longer distances and feel like there's more improvement to be had there. Which I guess there is. Sorry thinking aloud....

  • Based on WAVA then my sweet spot is 5K/10K and I guess that's because I've run 100+ parkruns which does kind of help understand the distance.

  • I suppose by accomplished I mean "best at". I voted 5k, partially because it's my best WAVA, but also because it's the distance I feel as though I've mastered more than all the others (it's all relative, of course).

  • Indeed. 5k is my best WAVA also but I've hated the past couple of PB/near PBs I've run at that distance whereas I loved my other PBs. Will have a think.

  • You are using "accomplished" in a really loose sense here ;-)? Split between 10K and half, but went for 10K as I've had more "good" races and more consistency at that. Said split definitely does not though, a la Hendo, mean 10 miles.

  • My 'best raced' race was a 10k, but I was always far more at home racing 10milers. Think if I hadn't put so much time into training for and running marathons I'd have got better results at Half marathons - if I was to start running again then I'd definitely only be looking to race 10 mile and Half distances as targets. I'm not sure this answers your question though... *rambles*

  • My wava is much better for 5k than any other distance (well, 57 compared to 51 or 50 for everything else). I feel I have some improvements to come at longer distances if I stay injury free long enough to get more races in!

  • I suspect a lot if people will be best at 5k because that's the distance they've done most, due to parkrun.

  • My best WAVA is for a parkrun which I think was a fluke as I've never got close to it again. Ignoring that result, my WAVA scores are fairly close across the distances. My preferred race distance is definitely the half.

  • Oooh tricky and dependent on your definition of "accomplished"
    I have a very evenly spread highest WAVA across 5k, 10k, 10 miles and HM but, right now, I *feel* most accomplished at 50 miles as that is the distance where I am most competitive (in terms of my placing results)
    I'm "competitive" across the board in terms of wanting to beat everyone - including snakes and ladders

  • I'm seeing some convergence in my WAVAs for my common distances - 5k, 10k and half all in the range 67-70%. But maras, a lowly 58%. I just don't seem to be able to train for / stay fit for / sustain pace for a decent mara time. So to completely unanswer your question, the distance I'm least accomplished at is full mara. Thanks for reading.

  • It is probably something to do with my training, but 5k, I Like intervals, and short tempos, but don't really like long runs, although I think my best WAVA is now a 10k race, I have many more higher WAVAs at 5k, could be parkrun too....My mile time is super-pants though.

  • WAVAs should tell the tale and show that it's relatively rare to be a complete sprinter or a complete 'proper' long distance ie marathon - runner. I think on this site Vrap and I are the -rare - good examples of this. Given equal training for each event I'm pretty sure most people will be 'best' at 5-10k- 10 mile. This is still distance running - it doesn't mean they're sprinters - or marathoners come to that.

    Of course personal preference comes into it too - but I'm pretty sure about the science.

  • WS - your results still make sense as a mile is close to 1500m which is the other real middle distance event. Middle distancers are another breed! I suspect Autumn Leaves is an MD runner at heart (at body perhaps I should say). Whether one WANTS to run the distance one is best suited to is quite another matter!

  • 5k cos I've done more by, er, miles. I think 10 miles is a sensible distance and over in a reasonable time, but worth getting your teeth into. I definitely thought 10 miles would be a good distance for a race about 1hr53 into my half marathon on Sunday.... :)

  • Within any period of time, my WAVA doesn't really vary too much regardless of distance. I appear to be the archetypal "one speed" (one-WAVA)? runner. I have rubbish runs, and good runs. And the distance over which I'm running them doesn't seem to make much difference, subjectively (i.e. I hated/loved it) or objectively (my WAVA is still only so-so).

    What makes a difference is whether have run regularly and enough...

  • I would have thought my most accomplished would be marathon distance and according to my WAVA it is but only by a very small margin when compared to a 10k I did a few weeks before. ( does any of that actually make sense)

  • I go by WAVA. My best is 10K. This is quite nice for me, because it means that I believe I can get better at 5K and half (absolute PB and relative WAVA, obv). Mine is not linear, so tells me I have under achieved in some. Beyond half (i.e. marathon and beyond) I think good WAVA is much harder to achieve. The quantity of good training you have to do to achieve equivalent performance level is beyond most mortals in terms of time, commitment, avoiding injury etc.

    Look forward to your big data analysis though, to see what you come up with. :-) G

  • By the way, I took the question to be "Which distance do you think you have achieved your best result at so far..." rather than "Which distance do you think would be the one that you could do best at..." Actual to date, rather than potential in the future. Which should correlate with data, because you can't do data analysis on the future?! I think the best WAVA I *could* achieve would probably be at 5K or below, possibly mile or even 400-800m. But that's another life, cos I like plodding 10 miles in the hills too much to ever concentrate 5 days per week on track or other speed based training! Different question. :-) G

  • It's only after half that my WAVA falls off (marathon, ouch). My 10k is 1% better than everything else, but I think that's partly because I was 50 instead of 49 when I ran that time, and it was partly a marathon bounce. I suspect that I'd probably do best at 10k if I trained focusing on that, because the times hold up well against halves which I do focus for.

  • [Completely off topic, but I find it interesting how many people both ^^^^ here and in conversation elsewhere rate a 10 mile race as their preferred distance. Why then are there relatively so few 10 mile races?]

    Perhaps our WAVAs decline as the distance gets longer because most humans were simply not designed to run very long distances at a fast-ish pace? If you're chasing a mammoth or being chased by a wolf, 6 miles would be quite a chase. I think one or other of you would have given up well before 26 miles. ;-)

  • I m ight be an oddity, but my best WAVA has always been at HM over the years. 5k and 10k not far behind but even as I keep PBing at distances the HM remains the fastest and best. I drop off a bit at marathon which happens to be the distance of which I would say most of my proudest performances come at, but in theory its not my strength and I havent achieved potential. Neither to I have the out and out pace for shorter distances although off Marathon training I can post decent times.

  • Interesting stuff! My mile, 5k, 10k, 10 mile and HM PBs have a WAVA variance of just over 1%, I've gone with 5k as my most accomplished distance as it's the one at which I feel most in control and have the best overall age gradings.

  • I'm in the plodding club with 10K WAVA a couple of percentage points better than 5K/parkrun. But what I can't fathom is why I consistently seem to run faster 5K segments in my 10K races than I do in stand-alone 5K events. I'm trying to address that with a series of 5K races over the next few weeks.

  • Like you, my best WAVA is 5k and I'm sure it tapers down (is there a graph for that?) but the distance I feel 'best' when doing is the marathon. I really don't like running fast over even short distances. Doesn't translate to better WAVA over long ones though :(

  • My best, WAVA WISE is 10K, but my favourite is HM because it is that much more of a challenge and, for the first 5 or so that I did I saw a consistent improvement.

  • Er my best wava ever was 89% at 60 metres, 100 metres 83% ... 5ks and 10ks 63% at best - everything else slots neatly in between. Conclusive, I think!

  • My performances don't follow the line either. I either punch above my weight at the shorter distances or don't yet have the stamina to reach my full potential over the longer races. Best age-rated performance is at 800m.

  • Did a one-off 5k and found it a bit too quick for me; 10k I can do quite well at a good pace; half-marathons are consistent but I can have the occasional off day; marathons still need some work on. In short, I'm better at 10k or a half-marathon, but tend to only run marathons as they're a challenge!

An ungainly fish

I am sure that all the swimmers amongst you will pick up a few tips on how (not) to swim from that :-)

One of the things we did whilst we were away (I'm back now) was to get a swimming lesson with one of the Club La Santa coaches. I should very quickly say that the video was BEFORE :-) For £23, Katie and I got a one-to-two half hour (which turned into more like 40 minutes) with Rachel from the Green Team, who was excellent.

She had a little chat with us about what we wanted to achieve (improve our front crawl), and our current experience (we swim 1000m once a week, in about 26-27 mins). Then she watched us do a couple of lengths, and set about giving us some advice. This took the form of walking us through some simple drills designed to get us thinking about breathing, rotation, core strength, catch (nothing to do with fish, but instead, the bit where your hand goes in the water to pull the water back), and kick (she pointed out just how much lateral energy I'm wasting). She was epicly patient as our brains struggled to turn the simple instructions into actions, and was clearly pleased when we made little breakthroughs (a-ha! moments). The idea behind it all is that each little drill helps your mind to focus on one part of the stroke, building it all together, so that when you go back to 'length swimming', it all starts to fit together.

I have no after video to share, but I am looking forward to our weekly swim tomorrow morning, where I'll be trying to put some of these things into practice. #fiveyearplan :-)

  • Angus - I will definitely include loads of footage from it in my Club La Santa highlights vLog, and will try to put together some thoughts on the cam too.

    Claypole - Katie filmed me from above the water too, and told me the simple fact that I wasn't keeping my fingers together. A year ago, I wasn't even able to swim continuously without getting into oxygen deficit; and was struggling to keep my face in the water. I'd agree - it's awesome seeing the progression :-)

A five year plan

As you may well have read in Katie's blog, we spent six hours on Saturday rubbing sun cream into ironfolks. I am so glad that we volunteered, and also glad that we chose the option from amongst the others available. The opportunity to spend anything up to a couple of minutes with each competitor, as they prepared their bodies for a marathon, was a real insight.

Our bus took us all the way from the cloudier north of the island to the sun-soaked golden sands south. It was quite a shock to discover they'd been hoarding all the sunshine, but as we said in our taxi back to the airport, we couldn't imagine staying anywhere other than Club La Santa. For me, at least part of this is avoiding the oi oi saveloy Brits on tour kiss me quick phenomenon. In our sun creaming break, I remember looking up at a terrace bar, at the fags and booze obliviousness, and being so glad that we aren't part of it. That's not to say I didn't enjoy some booze - but I think I got through about 4-5 pints of lager in the course of a week :-)

I digress. We arrived and found a hoard of yellow "crew" t-shirts (which will now be one of my favourite race shirts), and were assigned into the Cream Team, under the leadership of the redoubtable Wanda, who was asleep in the massage tent when we arrived at the marquee :-)

Our first job was to lug sun loungers a hundred yards across the beach, whilst Wanda tried to source more sun cream (the existing stock had been pinched whilst she was in the tent), and we got to know a few of our fellow volunteers. The Canadian lady next to me found it to be the least nerve-wracking way to support her ironhusband.

We barely had time for a quick briefing before the news spread that the first bikers were heading into T2. They would rack up, grab their run bag, and get changed in the tent. The more experienced creamers told us to stand back, as the pro's would probably not want anything. And then proceeded to go bouncing up and down the tent, telling everyone "I've just rubbed cream on Helmut Herr / Ivana Glassowater!!!".

You might gather from the last sentence that I know very little about the upper echelons of the triathlon world. And you'd be right. All the leaders came through, looking very toned and focused, but I didn't have a clue who they were. This isn't unique to triathlon if I'm honest. Aside from the household names, I don't know much about elite runners either. Their achievements are great, but my athletic heroes, and the ones I model myself on are the people I see every day on Fetch. And my job here is not to give an account of the race that might appeal to an elite athlete - but to explain what it feels like from the perspective of the rest of us.

For this reason, I got so much more out of the people further down the field. After about 10-15 athletes, the stream of competitors finally thickened up to the point where I got my first customer. All tentativeness is put to one side, and it's all you can do to focus on getting your gloved hand onto every bit of exposed flesh (and a quick rummage under the hemlines to make sure everything is covered). The leading men and ladies are all very firm! The men are slightly more bristly than I'd been led to believe though.

Before too long, the waiting turned into a continuous stream. The austere front runners also gave way to a bit more interaction - and I got into the habit of leading them through the creaming process - sit them down and do the neck whilst they fiddle with their socks; a fatherly smile as you do their ears, asking them if they have a hat; then shoulders, legs, and a Merv Hughes stripe for them to rub in. Over the day, my opening question became honed to "Are you having a good day?", taking it from there. More often than not, the question was a very definite yes, and offered a little insight into their journey so far. As the day progressed, I sat with more and more competitors, and just waited and listened, whilst they got themselves together for the final leg. There was nakedness, hugs, sign language, chaffing and pork pies. There was even a guy in a Fetch Buff who had never heard of the website. Good luck Stefan!

Aside from 90 or so minutes of sprint tri, the closest shared experience I can offer are a few marathons, which were quite hard enough. The thought of a few hours swimming in the sea, a quarter of a day on a bike, and THEN going out to run a marathon, is astounding. Moreso in heat, wind, or any of the other conditions normally associated with reality. There were around 2000 competitors, and around 1750 finishers - a way smaller event than any big city marathon (and yet somehow bigger) - numbers limited by the scale of the event, and the lack of oxygen at the top of Mount Crazy.

And yet, here I am, making a five year plan.

What Club La Santa can learn from parkrun

I am full of dinner and ice cream, and realised that I haven't updated my blog with our latest adventures.

This morning, we made our season's debut at the traditional morning gymnastics by the pool. As far as I'm aware, this routine is as old as the resort - with exactly the same soundtrack too. I have a real soft spot for the music and the routine now :-)

Straight after the gymnastics, lots of people go over to the stadium to meet up for the start of the morning run. And it's something that I have to gripe about, unfortunately - but I do think that with a few small changes, it could be much, much better. The session is led by four members of the 'Green Team', and they each lead a group - a 5k run, a 4k run, a 3k run, and a 2k walk. The problem occurs because each of these groups operate at a designated pace. We joined the 5k group, who run at 8 mins/mile. The team leader runs at this pace, and if you don't run at that pace, you get left behind (or have to run on ahead) - take it or leave it, there's no looking back or looping back.

The route for all the runs is pretty straightforward - it's a figure of eight around the lagoon that sits beside the hotel - so it's nigh on impossible to get lost.

Every other sport that we've encountered here has been wonderfully inclusive - tennis and squash lessons start with how to hold a racket; windsurfing starts on the shore; swimming starts with basic breast stroke technique; and the class instructors (Body Pump, Abs etc) go to great lengths to point out different options for different abilities. It's one of the things that makes Club La Santa so welcoming.

So what about running then? Both of us are comfortable running 5k, and whilst I can run one at 7mins/mile at the moment; and Katie is not far off being able to run one at 8mins/mile - it still represents a level beyond anything that either of us would call "social", and not exactly what I'd call "inclusive". Pertinently, the 4k and 3k runs also came past us, as we trotted around chatting at 9:30/mile - so even the lesser distance groups tend to ring fence their membership through pace.

In our opinion, it would be way more inclusive, and perhaps even easier to marshal, to set everyone off together, in a parkrun style, albeit without any timing system. A simple change that would encourage more participation, and inclusiveness. What do you say, Club La Santa? I must say though, parkrun could definitely improve too, by offering a fabulous and massive selection of breakfast choices straight after each run.

Last night we watched the 'Parade of Nations' - which featured these fascinating ladies who played drums very loudly, and flung them around whilst doing so:



They led a troupe of participating athletes on a march around the hotel, finishing with a final blow out in the square. Aside from them, the highlight was seeing some of the athletes from the islands surrounding Lanzarote, who looked as though they were having the time of their lives :-)

I also took a run out to La Santa - the little fishing village near CLS. There are some nice-looking restaurants and bike cafes here, but I was taken by the rustic little fishing harbour:



Following my promise, I also tried Spanish Monster Munch.



Unfortunately they are poor cousins to the pickled onion taste sensation available in the UK. Think Pom Bears crossed with Walkers French Fries, and you get some idea of the lameness.

We also had some fun today with the TomTom Bandit (it's an action camera - think Go Pro, but then add in that warm fuzzy feeling you get when the people who make it return your emails). The lovely people at Starfish Communications have been kind enough to loan me one. It's waterproof up to 50 metres (with a special extra rubberised lens cap - matron), so we stuck it at the bottom of the swimming pool today whilst we swam up and down. Here's a screen shot from the video - I'll upload more of that when we get back to the UK, so you can all critique my stroke:



Finally, thanks for all your nice comments on the Garmin auto import thing. The problem was actually a result of the outage that we had on the site on Sunday morning (due to a hardware failure on the server). When the site is down, Garmin try again (24hrs later) to send across your files. This double-thickness load the following day was enough to make the alarm bells ring on the Fetch server ("aargh, another server is spamming us"), and shut its doors. So the upshot is that it was actually the Fetch server that caused the problem. Hopefully most of you are well on your way to getting all your missing runs - and I've got a list of "things to do to make sure that never happens again" for when I get back.

  • CLS used to have a variety of morning runs at different paces, which were accessible to almost everyone. I miss that, especially now I'm way out of their league. I've spoken to them about this in the last few years with a view to creating options that are open to the more - ahem - 'mature' customer. I think it may need a bit more effort to achieve but I like the idea of a Parkrun style run.

Cream Me Up, Scotty

Since my last blog, we've had a nice mixture of lazy and busy, which have conspired to see me in bed before 9pm this evening. I generally ache.

On Tuesday, we did three classes:

Ultimate Abs - I filmed this, and will put the video up when I am back. But basically it's like torture for your stomach for a straight half an hour.

Stretch and Relax - a lullaby of stretching routines, and a nice chance to have a lie down in the sun whilst pretending it's cross training.

Body Pump - begins with "surely I haven't put enough weight on this bar", and ends with the sound of screaming muscles. Good music though.

although I was more intrigued by these weird crisps pretending to be Monster Munch. I will investigate and report back:



This morning, we headed to one of the Olympic-sized swimming pools (there are three of them), to do our usual Wednesday morning 1km swim. The 50m version was a bit of a challenge - no wall to push off every 25m, and the walls at either end were like cliff faces, so you couldn't even grab onto the side to spring load yourself for the next length. And the wind was pretty strong too, making little waves, and seemingly making alternate lengths seem twice as hard. I was a good few minutes slower than normal, but I still enjoyed myself. We are booked in for some swim coaching on Sunday. Here's one of the pools:



After breakfast, we went to pick up our press passes for the Ironman, and also made the decision to volunteer - both of which mean we get t-shirts! Baggage drop? Water station? No, for six hours on Saturday, we'll be rubbing sun cream into iron people :-)

This afternoon, we took a wander to do some geocaching, which was almost disastrous, as my phone doesn't have a carrier out here, and the hotel wifi stops just short of where the caches are. But with a bit of luck, and some eagle eyes from Katie, we found one of the two.

Nice bits from home: FaceTime ukulele with my stepson; the news that The Boy has just got his black-white belt; and my sis (who once declared herself to be 'not built for running') signing up for the Cardiff Half.

If you've got a Garmin, and have not seen your runs and rides coming across since Monday... I am aware of it, and have contacted their developer support. I am confident that I've not changed anything at this end, because I was in the sky when it happened - but perhaps they have updated something at their end, and I've not been attentive enough to notice. I'm doing what I can to get it resolved. Thanks for being epic.

I'm going to sleep soon, in the hope that the DOMS won't be so bad in the morning :-)

Greetings from Club La Santa

Ey up!

We've been at CLS for 24 hours now, enough time to have some stuff to report :-) It's Ironman Lanzarote week, so we'll get to see loads of that - and it's clear to see that everyone and everything is gearing up to what should be an exciting day. The expo tents are going up, and I've been having fun trying to work out which of our fellow guests look like nervy ironfolks. I've only done a sprint tri - is there a metal associated with that? Leave me a comment with your suggestions :-) Copperman? Tinman? JohnInman?

Our journey began yesterday morning at 3am, for our drive to Stansted, and a 7am flight to Arrecife. The flight was a little bit delayed, but not until we'd got on the plane, so it felt like a long time in a tube - but I got plenty of reading done.

A €40 taxi ride later, and we arrived for our third visit in four years to this resort. I think it's safe to say that we like it here. Last year's building work continues - now tackling the old reception area - but it's not intrusive or noisy at all.

We're in one of the 'old' apartments that has been given a makeover - I've got no photos to hand, but I will be doing a vLog when I get back, so you'll get to see everything if you're interested. It's simple, but neatly done, and everything seems to be in good order, although we felt it was a bit strange to have to pay €14 for use of the in-room safe. The apartment is at the back of the hotel - I wondered what sort of view we'd get - but from our floor (3) we can see beautiful mountains and sea - and we have a nice secluded balcony. Here's the view:



There's also an interesting view down, peering onto the patios of other apartments - it's a bit like having your own dolls house, or like playing The Sims:



Knackered from our journey, we made it to the pool bar for some food (chicken burger for me, Spanish omelette for K) and a cheeky San Miguel. It was about all we could do after that to get some water and chocolate from the shop, and head back for a kip. The shop is nice with decent prices, and a great variety, and I found myself strangely impressed with these retro souvenir ashtrays :-)



After a kip it was time for another meal - so we headed to the restaurant, where we'd very kindly been given half board by our hosts. I had pasta, fish and some grilled duck, whilst Katie enjoyed lots of salad and paella.



We also booked ourselves into a bunch of classes, including Ab Attack, Stretch and Relax, and Body Pump - all part of the package when you come here; and we enquired about personal swim coaching - although it's pretty busy for some reason - maybe all the iron folks have remembered that they need to be able to swim :-) Fingers crossed, we will be trying that out on Sunday, when all the ironfolks will be sleeping it off.

Early bed for us, but not the end of the proceedings for the day. At about 11pm I woke up with stomach pain, and spent a sweaty white-knuckled half hour getting rid of whatever it was that had disagreed with my innards. The bathroom floor was lovely and cool, and very clean upon close examination :-)

I did wonder about whether to mention it in my blog, because I'm sure it doesn't sound great. But I think it's more important for you to know about my actual experience, rather than some airbrushed version of it that sounds like an infomercial. It means that when I say something was good, which just about everything here IS, I genuinely mean it. And I think it says a lot about how I feel about the food, that I had no qualms about heading for (simple) breakfast this morning. The food has always been great here, and I've lost no confidence in it at all. And it's still in my stomach, which is even better news :-)

So this morning we skipped the 5k, and instead had a leisurely run together after breakfast - the wind is pretty strong at the moment, so the waves along the volcanic north beaches were fabulous. Katie has gone to a yoga class, and I'm reading my book under a parasol beneath a bright but overcast sky, preparing my abs for a pre-planned workout this time.

  • That's a very weird downview. I'd think I'd be a bit self-conscious down there. A sprint tri might make you a ... Nickelman? Try-a-tri would be Magnesiuman. I did think of Zincman - but that would be someone who didn't swim very well.

  • I'd always assumed that ironmans are called ironmans because they are as hard as iron. A sprint tri is quick (or at least quicker) than other tri events so the name should be based on an "as quick as ..." simile. Greasedlightningman or Flashman or Weaselman?

  • Dvorak- yes maybe it would feel a bit strange to be in the lower apartments. i was trying to work out how many of the apartments would be overlooked like that. Ours is 3 flights of stairs up (no lift option for the 2nd and 3rd section) which is fine for us and I'd prefer over being overlooked. However if you have a buggy or are not able to do stairs you would need to be lower.

  • Helegant- no problem with being back over here as such, the accommodation is fine and I almost felt the luxury ones were a waste, for us anyway. I miss overlooking the lagoon and having afternoon sun more than anything. I do wonder if I'd miss the air con in high summer though.

  • Fetch, I saw your charter, and couple bits feedback (if I read it and understood correctly) : As an affiliated AC, I don't think we'd put up any charter or code other than our national body (Scottish Athletics) and our own individual club plans and rules. I don't think we'd recognise any other as having jurisdiction? If you're asking do we support the principles that you stated, then wholeheartedly "Yes" and try to implement them to best of our ability. But not sure we'd use a Fetch badge to attest to it? Just FYI. :-) G

  • I'd agree with Mr G's comment re the charter. I don't think you'll get many clubs adopting them, although I'd hope that nearly all clubs already encompass the principles within their own charter/rules/whatever. Not sure where you are trying to go with the charter thing, other than getting some nice marketing exposure on club websites :-)

  • less than 100 runners, with 20-30 on a club night) and whilst everyone is welcome, our club at the moment isn't suitable for all. we run 10K on a club night. I know that is too far for many but at this moment we don't have anyone who wants to lead a couch to 5K or beginners group. We had in the past had people join us at the mid-point of the run, which kind of works, and I'm a great advocate of parkrun which we recommend for people to get up to speed. We also recommend other local clubs who do have beginners group. So, in short, I'd love to meet your 8 goals, but we can't at the moment. I'd be interested in hearing how other small clubs cope with the wide variance in potential members speeds and distances.

  • CW - I've run with your club a couple of times before now, in a previous life, when I was working away from home in Berkshire. They seemed like a nice bunch at the time. I take your point - it's not always easy. But some creative route planning (coupled with the occasional loop back or lap) can help - and I think so long as there's some consideration made, it's all anyone can really ask for. I will see if I can tweak the wording a bit.

  • If you come again, let me know! We do try and think about these think and would really like to do better so we are open to ideas. We operate a loop back at half way to pick up the back markers and keep the group together and also we have added loops for the speedies so they can run 12K instead of 10K for example. If you vary the route, or provide short-cuts you need someone to run with new members so they don't get lost - we have a buddy system in operation but not everyone wants to reduce their run. We ask the committee members to help out but it really is difficult to cater for all speeds. We do think about this stuff, so I just wanted to highlight some of the challenges.

  • CW - I've looked at the Finch Coasters website a few times since they're local. I've always got the impression (not necessarily correctly) that, even though it says that all are welcome, if you can't hack the distances or keep up you wouldn't be made to feel welcome for long.

    If you are offering nothing to the beginner runner or those who are coming back from injury then it's far more likely that they will join one of the other clubs in the area that do.

  • Hi Molesy, thanks for the feedback. Whenever people enquire about the club we do let them know about the sessions and the range of abilities at the club and suggest they try us out for a few sessions to see if they fit in. If they feel it's not for them we suggest other clubs like Reading Roadrunners. It would be great to expand the depth of our membership and would love some more creative ideas to allow that.

  • Exactly. 3 of our current committee started on C25K programmes with our club. We added almost 70 members last year due to our beginners groups which become self-supporting. I know that you have two very large clubs either side of you CW with RRR and us at Sandhurst, so there is competition. We run different activities every night for different levels, so there is always something for everyone each week and we work hard on helping people transition from one group to the next as they progress if that is what they want. TBH I see no issue with Finch being a club for faster/fitter runners only if that's what the club want to do.

  • I ended up with RRR when I lived in Wokingham after trying FC and RRR. I wasn't fast enough and that was abundantly clear. It's a shame as I know a number of lovely FCs (who weren't on the outrun I did). Also RRR has the track and coaches to bring people on. It does depend what you want from your club, and providing something for everyone is time consuming. But I think new members are often going to be new runners rather than folks moving into the area, and if you want to grow then that's where you'd need to target.

  • I do a track session once a week where the intervals are chosen for me. But when I do my own I like to do either cruise intervals: 4 x 5mins @ threshold/10K pace (Jack Daniels idea), or 10 x 400m/quarter miles (Roger Bannister's lunchtime workout!)

Also try and do a hill session once a week to build up my stamina for a hilly half coming up - for this one, I do four sets of 5 mins continuous with a min recovery in between sets, up and down a moderate hill near home (which gets strangely less 'moderate' on each set ....)

He once famously said, "Why should I practice running slowly?" And he became the greatest runner of his time. Arguably, of all time!
