Did you write a blog yesterday?

3:38pm, 30 Oct 2015
If you did, it should be safe. There's a database table that records the blogs, and another one that records the titles, and the permissions. The latter table crashed - so the content was safe, just not the titles.

So I've called your blog from yesterday 'Unknown Title', and made it private. Feel free to rename it and reshare it.

Thanks

The First Rule of Web Server Maintenance

4:47pm, 27 Oct 2015
...is to always make sure your web server has problems when you've booked some time off for doing other things.

You've probably noticed that the server has been struggling a bit over the last few days - and it's coincided with me taking a couple of days off to help my dad with the plastering in my soon-to-be home office slash utility room slash library slash kennel slash panic room.

Here's what it looked like a few months back:

Then I plasterboarded it all, and it looked like this:

Then my dad turned up, and started doing this:

I've been his helper, mixing plaster, and passing him stuff. I am covered in dust, with lumps of plaster in my hair. On the plus side, my mam has brought more cake than I'd eat in a month. I'm trying my best.

Regarding the server, I am working on resolving the problem. It might go a bit pear shaped tomorrow morning, but hopefully we (that's me and the folks from Positive Internet, who provide the server) are getting on top of it slowly.

Thanks for your patience.

The gain line

11:24am, 19 Oct 2015
Here's the antidote to all that rugby heartache over the weekend:

His team lost too, but he tried his hardest, just like Wales, and England and Scotland and Ireland; and Japan, and New Zealand for that matter. It's not great to see the media and the fans singling out players and coaches (and even referees, although a rule change to let the TMO fix the Scotland penalty would not have gone amiss) for criticism. Yeah, they all make mistakes, and bad decisions, or sometimes they're just not quite good enough. But what matters most to me is that they care. So take heart, Fetchies, and when you're training this week, remember how much you care. Get over that gain line.

My training is going pretty well, except for the fact that my lovely Katie-wife is still uncomfortably and randomly sore after running, which is Not Good.

Last week I managed my longest run since London - 8.1 miles. Not exactly pulling up trees by comparison, but my heart rate was nice and low throughout (sub-70% WHR for 95% of it), and I felt like I was in control and finished well. I also found a lost dog called Rusty (which accounts for a large part of the other 5%).

I managed to do some intervals, for the 5th week in a row - which not something I've managed for about 9 years. I've been running with the C25K group on Friday mornings, and then going straight to West Park (which has lovely smooth tarmac paths, and is doing a fabulous job of Autumn) and doing my session. I've done three weeks of 3x2k (60s breaks), followed by two weeks of 6x1k (2min breaks). I was a wee bit slower this week:

Last week KM's = 4:14,4:12,4:17,4:21,4:25, 4:25 (average = 4:20)
This week = 4:30,4:24,4:28,4:27,4:26,4:23 (average = 4.26)

but I'm seeing some big positives, namely that I feel like I finished stronger / more comfortable this week with more consistent splits, and my heart rate seems to have dropped a fair bit:

Last week HR = 157, 168, 170, 170, 171, 171
This week av HR = 120(clearly dodgy), 162,165,166,167,169

I guess the reduced speed will have accounted for some of that, but I'm still treating it as a bit of a win :-)

My next chance to test this all out is probably not until the end of the month at parkrun - but I would like to beat my SB of 22:31 please.

Alongside the running, we've also been doing a weekly swim, which we've managed for 15 out of the last 18 weeks (the missing ones all coming in the summer holidays). I won't go on about this, but I'm really enjoying the new challenge. I think my speed improvements have plateaued for a while, but I've sussed the bilateral breathing now, which feels a lot like discovering that you can run continuously - rather than just 'drowning with style'.

And the other thing that's been quite surprising is that I've lost weight. I started the year imagining that I would lose weight during marathon training, and was looking forward to that - but I didn't drop a pound. I even gave up drinking for three months too. Nada. But in the last 2-3 months I've gone from 12st10 down to 12st1. That'll do I think, I've found enough bony bits already.

Overall, I'm pleased with the training, but I'd like to turn it into points on the board now. So I'd like a 5k, 10k or half marathon PB please - I don't especially mind which. And I'd like my wife better please. And a big packet of M&M's. Crouch. Bind. Set.

  • Hugs for KatieB. Any idea what it is? Great training there Fetch, well done. Consistency is key - and the gains come in jumps, perhaps 6-8 weeks at a time, and often not when you expect them. Just because you don't get a PB at one race, the one the following week could suddenly be the purple patch. Funny old thing, fitness. Lovin RWC, even the lows. :-) G

Fectch

7:57am, 17 Oct 2015
...is what was very nearly printed on 200 shirts.

Luckily, despite having given my approval for full production, I managed to contact someone at the t-shirt company (via a frantic bit of stalking) to report the error. For the record I didn't create the error, but I failed to spot that it had crept into the design document.

My boy was disappointed to only get 22/25 in his spelling test this week, but thanks to me, he went to bed with a grin. And as he pointed out, the 'typo of death' would have just made them worth more.

My lovely wife also rallied round with the creative suggestions, including registering the domain name and starting a spin-off website.

The dog just looked at me intensely, wondering how anybody could get confused about such a simple concept. Mind you, he still does.

  • Of course, the problem with the Find Fectch idea (which has just occurred to me) is that, rather than go and talk to a fellow fetchie once the T shirt is spotted, people would be more concerned with getting behind the shirt wearer to get a good look at their lower back area. I can see all sorts of misunderstandings arising as a result, none of which I want to get the blame for.

The zipper challenge!

10:47am, 15 Oct 2015
One of the long-standing things on my to do list was a mechanism that quickly allows a new user to get started, by importing a whole batch of training in one go. And similarly, it would be handy for anyone who's had a site hiatus to fill in the gaps quickly before anyone notices.

Well, I've hopefully ticked that box now :-)

There's a new tool here, where you can upload a ZIP file full of TCX, FIT, or GPX files:

http://www.fetcheveryone.com/training-import-zip.php

and the system will automagically (wow - is that a recognised word now? I was expecting Chrome to complain) queue them up and suck them in.

IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF you plan on trying it, what I would highly recommend is that you start with the internet equivalent of a tester pot - so maybe 5 files in one ZIP - just to make sure that the system is recognising your files correctly. It would be a pain in the backside to have to delete a squillion training entries, right? But if all goes to plan, you can upload hundreds at a time.

I will add the import link to the training page at some point soon - I'm just watching how it all hangs together for now, before I make it more widely available.

In other news - the best comment about my dad with his sugar-filled backpack came from Nayan on Facebook, who described it as "Worst carbloading strategy ever!" :-)

Sugar daddy

11:18am, 14 Oct 2015
Not content with learning to rollerskate at 68, my dad has decided to give himself a new challenge.

He's been running for nearly as long as I have, and has always taken December off, because there was always a lot of Christmas work to be done, pre-retirement. This year, he's dropping his longer runs for the month (usually about 6-8 miles), but instead is planning to do some mile long runs on his treadmill. At an incline. Wearing a rucksack. Full of sugar.

I've asked my mam to take photos.

Now in colour!

5:38pm, 13 Oct 2015
The detailed view of your training runs has had a bit of a makeover.

Key changes:

1) you can now set up different colour bands for five different pace brackets - so you can see how much time you spent inside each bracket. The example is taken from some intervals I did - and I've set the red zone up to be my 5k PB pace. I managed to spend 33% or 12mins36secs in this zone; and 52% or 19m41s within the 10k pace zone. You can use the little arrows in the coloured boxes to set these up any way you like (or you can just type the paces into the boxes).

2) similarly for HR training, there are three zones - the red zone would typically be set up to indicate your LT heart rate, and similarly the green zone would show the upper heart rate limit for easy runs. You can set these up how you like. In my example, I managed to get 63% of my run (24m19s) above my LT heart rate.

I've found it interesting to poke all the numbers up and down a bit, and watch how things change. Any changes you make will be stored, so that once you've got your various pace and HR zones set up, they'll persist next time you visit, or when you view a different run. You can set the pace zones independently for running, swimming and biking.

3) Just above the charts, you'll see two little drop-down boxes, allowing you to specify what you want to see on the x-axis (distance or time), and there's also a 'Sampling Rate' option, which replaces the arbitrary 'Flatten / Roughen' options. Each run and ride will automatically pick out a reasonable sample rate - so that your graphs will be nice and smooth - although you're free to choose a very low sample size to see the data in a more jagged format.

4) The new error bars illustrate just how much smoothing is going on. On the pace graph, the vertical bars show you the maximum and minimum recorded speed for that sample. Although we all tend to run and ride at a fairly smooth pace, the accuracy of GPS (can be out by up to 10 metres even when it's working exactly as intended) means that there's a lot of jaggedness that can make the data unreadable. I hope that the error bars help solve that problem. If you're the sort of person who likes to see your max speed, look out for particularly tall error bars - stick your mouse over those and the tooltip will tell you the max speed.

5) The dotted line on the pace graph shows your overall average. It's not a new thing, but now that the graphs have been split out into individual ones, it's a lot saner to have it switched on all the time.

That's it for now. Undoubtedly there will be some bugs, and some unusual behaviour where you've run/rode in a way I didn't anticipate - so feel free to say so. I hope you like it.

  • I like it - a lot :) but I can't tell the difference between the two greens on the graph, any chance the slowest pace band could be blue or something please?

  • This looks good at first glance, lots of fun to be had with the numbers and it might even make me do a few interval sessions just to see the coloured graphs!! Thanks for the motivation..

  • ...but have you done something to stop FIT files being instantly uploaded? My XT this morning took around 4 hours to appear - I thought perhaps because you were "doing stuff" at the time - but this evening's run also hasn't loaded yet. I know it's there because I can see it on Strava!

  • same problem here - Garmin Connect has my run from this morning, but it still hasn't appeared in Fetch yet... interruption coincides with the upgrade, so maybe a little technicolour bug has crept in?

  • The heart rate bad chart does not seem to be working for me. http://www.fetcheveryone.com/training-log-view.php?id=11786273 I think I should see 2.4% in a green band 4.6% in the grey bit in between and 93% in a red band. All I see is a green band above the heart rate line.

Competition Time!!!

9:53am, 7 Oct 2015
The nice folks at GORE-TEX(R) Footwear just don't know when to quit when it comes to giving away freebies, it seems :-)

They're sponsoring the 'European Outdoor Film Tour' - which is basically a showcase for nuttiness - so stuff like longboarding, horseback riding, ice-climbing, single track riding, trial running, extreme climbing, snow freeriding and slacklining. I don't know what all of those things are, but they all sound like the sort of things that people who are cooler than me get up to.

Anyways... long story short, they've given me a couple of tickets to one of their film nights, on November 12th at the Crescent Theatre in Birmingham. Hooray for all those folks who get mardy about stuff that's always London-centric :-) It's become a big tour, with over 200,000 people attending more than 300 events in 14 countries.

Right then... here's the poster - and you can find out more info at eoft.eu

If you want to win the tickets, there's a writing challenge. You've got a maximum of 50 words on the subject of "Your most extreme adventure", and I'll choose a winner on Friday 9th October at MIDDAY. Personally, I don't mind if the most extreme thing you've ever done is bought some balsamic vinegar. Have fun with it :-)
