Really really hot. too tiring by half. just jogged the last 8 miles and even that was a struggle
Great Day. Forget the PB's and serious running for the day, just enjoy the occasion. Hot and hillier than expected and thought I was running backwards down the home stretch I was going so slow but enjoyed immensly.
Took it easy - had to really due to crowds & heat - and had a great time!
ran with nicoll
Not enough food and fluid over the 24hrs before made me feel like i couldn't go on by mile 3, could i make it to the 1st water station at mile 5 - yes! and then things just got better, ate some of my wine gums, drank plenty, fab run and fab support all around the course.
Fat Man Runs
I was hoping for two hours but so many factors made this impossible - the heat, trying to get round other runners and being held up twice to let ambulances go past.
It was astonishing how so many people were dropping like flies, one guy collapsed in front of me with 200 metres to go - the only surprise is that only four died.
I only hope those that did suffer are on the road to recovery soon.
The support was fantastic though and the feeling going over the Tyne bridge with the Red Arrows doing a fly past just made my day.
My 1st ever race , god it was hot great day though , looking forward to next year .
Very warm day. First half marathon. Could have run quicker. A few injuries. Will get better
This was my first ever run since school. I ran with my brother bazza in aid of my daughters death on Aug 15th 2005. Very happy i finished it, love it will be doing losts more of them.. My thoughts to those who lost their life doing the run. love 2 all.......
The heat took everyone by surprise, my friend and I were both over ten minutes off our best. I saw seven people collapsed at the side of the road, 3 of those unconcious , sadly four men died.
What a scorcher, I've now got a nice white vest mark! Would have liked to have gone a bit faster but am happy with getting under two hours (just) for the first time on this course. All in all a cracking day out and loads of ale in Newcastle on Sunday night!
Had a nightmare - woke up feeling rotten and really shouldn't have run, but it's a long way to travel from Portsmouth just to turn round and go home. So set a personal worst by 35 minutes!
Kind of enjoyed it in a twisted kind of way though...
What an experience!!! Loved every second of it....Next year sub 2 hours!
Position 34167th. Chip timing so hopefully pretty accurate as compared with last year. If I'd realised I was so close to 3 hours I'd have maybe mustered a bit more to cross the line on the 'right' side of 3:00:00. Had difficulty with the heat. My pulse was racing away (170+) even by the time I got to the Tyne Bridge and I spent most of the rest of the race walking. The last three miles were hell! Never mind, that'll teach me to train! Back next year... I WILL BE QUICKER NEXT YEAR!!!
Horrible running weather - warm, still and humid. My first half-marathon and I'd expected to get round faster than that but just couldn't turn it up; my running partner was expecting a pb and got a pw instead so it's not just me!
Disaster from start to finish - found it difficult to get going and missed any water before 4.5 miles. Really struggled in the masses. Then ended up helping the girl running in front when she collapsed - 2 others had jumped over her!
My first ever race! Started off far too fast but at least it got me out of the crowds quickly! A wicked day out, promised myself I'd never make myself run again at about mile 9, then promised myself I'd run a marathon about 45 mins later. A very well organised event but could have done with some water during the first, hot few miles.
brilliant event, very hot though
Well, I finished it, but it was slow and hot
Nothing could have prepared me for that heat, considering the day before was showery.
I know it might have been said before but this race is getting overcrowded.
Fantastic day, raised £5,000 for EACH (East Anglia's Children's Hospices).
The race was a personal running disaster (cramps, dehydration & missed PB). After the race, these seem embarassingly insignificant compared to the tragic fatalities.
GNR ...... I've got your number and I'll be back to conquer you in 2006
Very hot, went off too fast and struggled for much of the race. Glad I did it, now I've got a time to beat in '06
It was boiling hot and there weren't enough drinks stations - hillier than I remembered and really crowded. Had to stop to go the loo - lost time (stopped watch whilst queuing) so I was actually running for 2 hours 7 mins despite official time.
Need to do sub 2 hour next year
felt really good personel best
Very hot day. I probably started too quickly because I slowed down too much in the later stages. It was the fastest time I have done this event. Wonderful atmosphere. Goodies included tee shirt, medal, chocolate bar, energy bar, water, pasta, pasta sauce, sweeteners, muscle gel, pepperoni (!). Ran for Leukemia Research and died my hair yellow to match the tee shirt. Got my photo in Runners World ! Had a great start at the front, took about 15 seconds to get under the start line. Chip timing worked well.
First time I've ever ran this far! Only done it because I got a late charity place but it was great! Really hurt and I git cramp after about 7 miles but I finished!
Hurry Up Harkins
Really tough, knee hurt from mile 10 and had to walk.
My second GNR and I did this one for Cancer Research, raising over 1,500 quid. Enjoyed the day, even though I do recall fading towards the end a bit.
bit disappointed as didnt beat last years time.Suffered badly from blisters this year will be back next year to beat my time!!!
Enjoyed the atmosphere of the race, but wasn't really ready, training wise, for a half marathon. Very busy and conjested.
Should have done better but started too fast. First time i did this so didnt know what to expect. Certainly didnt expect a 13.1 mile steady incline - well, thats what this beast feels like.
Race Number: 13680
only 4 months after serious abdominal surgery. Ran in Clown Fancy Dress with wife Anne. Just very thankful to be there at all.
