Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Not a great performance by a long chalk, but quite enjoyable anyway :O)

"It was hot..... damn hot.." ( to quote Robin Williams)
A gorgeous sunny day - a little bit of breeze..
So hydration was the order of the day pre-race!!!!!!!
Orange juice - definitely the hydration fluid of choice for me!!!!!

anyway we met the forum guys near the start near the start about half an hour before the off.. and the tone for the day was set - it was friendly - unhurrried..

The pulsed start worked well, and the race - although pretty crowded the whole way round - seemed to run really smoothly..
I was hoping to run around a 1:40 for this - so I set a target pace of 7:30m/m

I decided to set off at a gentle (ish) pace and see how it went - I didn't want to get the pacing wrong in that heat - so I thought - just run comfortably for the first half and see how you are feeling. So that's what I did, and by about mile 5 - where I came upon Swiss Bobby who was struggling with the conditions.. so I ran with him for a short while - I had realised that I was running easily and that I would be able hold the pace I was at and perhaps push on a bit too..

In races I often focus on the back of someone ahead of me and set them as a goal to pass at some point.. and here I found myself chasing a lady runner who was always that little way ahead of me - running at a great pace - and really evenly.
So for the best part of 8 miles I used her as a target - and my Garmin kept telling me to slow down!!!!!

Shortly after Mile 11 I finally caught and went past her, then heard her pull back alongside me
So - we had a chat - as you do!!!!
I told her that I'd been trying to catch her for about 8 miles,
and she said - when I went past she thought she should stick with me
So I said - tell you what - we'll finish this off together - what do you think...??
So an accord was reached.
She started to tire in the last 3/4 of a mile or so and told me to run on - and I said no - because she had unwittingly paced me through so much of the race - the least I could do was return the favour in the last bit!!!
So that's what happened...
and the final mile and a bit split was the fastest of the day!!!!!!!!!

I have no idea who she was...
Not even her name...

she was after a 1:40 - which she obliterated
and she thanked me for keeping her going from the point at which I caught her.....

What a race....

Ok here are the numbers

Distance:- 13.1 miles
Time:- 1:35:46
Pace:- 7:13 min/mile
AvHR:- 187bpm

scorchio! unofficial hosing most welcome. PB by a mighty 3 seconds. excellent marshalling and well supported. didn't take on enough water.
frisp
Great race, first 2 miles a bit congested. Sunny and warm, great fun! PB by more than 11 mins :)
magoo
Was going for the sub 1:17 on this one and struggled bad from 5 miles on. Very hot day but legs just didn't feel up to it. Struggled to maintain a steady pace and came home in 1:19:45. Want to forget this one and just move on....
Bob
VERY hot day, found the race very tough but semi-satisfied with the time given the conditions.
Nessie
2 miles in I decided that it was too hot to even think about going for a time, so I eased off and just enjoyed the atmosphere. It was great!
Applecross
Ummm, probably the second hottest day of the year, after the Britannic Asset 10 k...
And the end was awful - a lap around Glasgow green when you know the end is only about 100 yards away as the crow flies - aaagh!
Still, dead chuffed I did it though :-)
racheybabes
Yay.....PB!!!!
Doonhamer
Warm up effort for cardiff marathon. Ran 1st 2 miles very easy then next 11 at Marathon pace ( 6'20''). Quite pleased with effort given it was such a warm day
@smiffy_73
Very Very hot over 80° in fact so happy to finish without having to stop or walk. My first half marathon and training was restricted due to shin niggles so all in all reasonably happy. From what I can gather most people ran a PW in the conditions.
El Del
5 Min slower than last year. Scorching hot day
purplehippo
Too hot, striggled the whole way, worst race I've ever ran!!
Hee Jung
first half was fine...thought i would die the second half. disapointed with my time, but pleased i made it to the end.
Hibeedeb
My HM pw!!
Jenson
Wanted to run 9 min miles. Blew up at about 11 miles, disappointed with that but happy to get sub 2 hours on first proper attempt at a half.
IainMcK
One of the hottest days of the year (aound 30C). Struggled after 6 miles and had to take regular walking breaks (for the first time in years) from 9 miles to finish.
Selfish Git!!!
Had Hypo after cycling up to race (28miles) on tandem with a soft toy monkey as the stoker
andy69dude
My first ever half marathon at 16 years old!!! Really nice day very hot! Had a great run until last mile when I just felt as though I stopped dead on my feet! 63rd place
YoungWallace
Nice warm summer's day, my first half marathon too. Little bit drunk afterwards
ian9657
The heat was too much for me and the old Chronic Fatigue kicked in...... I was totally exhausted :-(
clairevmc
Terrible race - it was sooooo hot.
z1000jeff

ilonabean
