About Me | |

Harmless and perennially unaccomplished old woman, mostly minding my manners because I'm just a paying guest here. Sometimes I forget. NHS workforce survivor. Prone to toxic optimism, but not deluded enough to believe that anyone can do anything if they set their mind to it or that age is just a number. Quite nice in real life.
I took up running in 2001 to do just one marathon for charity, and here I still am. I have little talent for it, but once every few years I have a brief flash of mediocrity and then burn out. Realistically, I'm more likely to become a casualty than a beneficiary of age-related attrition in the sport, but I'm not going to sit around waiting for it to happen. Show More...

Set out to do 60 minutes easy with some strides. Quite nice out, overcast, light breeze, not cold.
20 minutes warm up, 10 minutes of 50dp efforts with 50dp recoveries (looks like I switched from "pick it up a little" to "run like fuck" after the second effort), 10 minutes easy, 10 minutes of 100dp efforts with 50dp recoveries, 10 minutes easy plus enough not to leave me with 5.9X miles. Discovered afterwards that there's a "skip last recovery" option and I'd used it when creating the session (I reused an old session and only altered the pace of the efforts). Jog home. Really nice out, cold and sunny and a bit of a breeze. Long sleeves, long legs, gilet, but didn't need a hat and gloves.
Set out to do up to 90 minutes easy with the option, which I took, of some striders. 40dp efforts with 40dp recoveries for one mile starting at 5 miles (so mostly downhill on a quiet road). A short 90 minutes easy (would have settled for 60, but I was running OK). Stiff breeze from the west, so the run back towards the town was really nice. Dry and sunny. Gave Infinities a proper go, mainly to see if the soles were better on wet ground than the Triumphs, but the earlier rain didn't come to anything and the ground wasn't wet so I still don't know.

Home from parkrun, going west to pick up my Fetchpoint bug and south east to squish it Having stayed on my feet in the rotten conditions at parkrun, I tripped over my own toes halfway across Station Road. More a gentle crumple than measuring my length; didn't even stop my Garmin but I did have a short walk up the steep bit of the hill before starting to run again.

Opted for Bower Park this weekend so that I wouldn't be leaving the invalid home alone for too long. Besides, I hadn't done it this year and Roy gave me a telling off when I met him in the town a couple of weeks ago. It was fine. Still horrible underfoot, and the low light made it difficult to see the path properly in places, but not the worst run I've ever had there.

I thought yesterday that I might do another long 90 minutes today, but I've got (presumed) viral symptoms above the neck and below the waist and once I set off I discovered that the backs of my thighs were tight. Did just enough to squish my Fetchpoint bug and pick up the low flying Rundles. And it also gets me over 100 miles for the month.

Still quite windy, but dry and sunny. Set out to do the big triangle then made the decision to doodle it up to 7 miles when I got back into town. Legs fine. Heart rate a little higher than I'd expect for the pace/perceived effort, but I just rolled with it because I felt OK. Enjoyed the tail wind coming back from Prospect.

Set out to do that loop knowing that it's a slightly long 90 minutes easy. It felt scruffy and laborious, but I got it done and added a little out and back to bring the distance over 9 miles even though my legs really didn't fancy it. If marathon training was fun all the time, everyone would do them and even I would train properly for them.

1.5 mile warm up, 4 mile at the pessimistic end of goal marathon pace (9.15-9.45mm, chosen so that I had a good chance of holding it going uphill because a successful conservative session is worth more to me just now than a sketchy ambitious session - and I also chose the route to make the tempo section easiest), jog home.
