The Fetch Mile
The time has come to pay homage to the phenomenon known around these parts as the Fetch Mile. Lord Barky of Derbyshire (as he should now be known) was the batonmeister for a wonderful day that saw over fifty runners battle it out over the Imperial standard and a variety of other distances.
Following our first meet in December, it would have been easy to believe that the track had been triple-booked, given the volume of people milling around the stand just before 10am. The early rain had gone, the sun was slowly burning its way through the clouds, and there was a mahooosive Fetch cake, as well as a table full of assorted home-made chunks, wedges and slices of gooey goodness. Forget the fabulous times set by the runners, the cakes were Olympic standard.
The youngsters race (400m) was a joy - the race numbers were as large as some of the entrants. Junior TR1 took first place with an impressive 1:31, whilst special bonus points should be awarded to Little Snail for his impressive starting technique, whilst Iris's boy wins the judges award for hardest fought run by sticking to the outside lane all the way round.
The main event was next, split into three groups - sub-6, 6-8, and 8+. The field was led home by Ally2, setting a new mark for the Fetch Mile of 4:36 - a challenge to all other Fetch Milers out there. Infact, challenge is the wrong word. Bloody impossible is closer to it! First lady was CC2 Speedy Goth in 6:01, also a new PB - which has left her completely speechless.
The hundred metres was something I'd rather forget, but special mentions should go to: Slickster, for winning the AutoPause 100m challenge; to SarahL and IanM for providing a very exciting sprint finish, and to everyone who went "oooooh", when my leg went pop :-)
In running, in cake, and in organisational excellence, this event has set the standard that all other Fetch Mile events will be measured by. Nom nom nom.
