Hi ,

A big difference between running and cricket

1:17pm, 12 Mar 2025
It's now just under eight weeks until the Sunday 2nd XI play their first match (Saturday 2's play in seven weeks). I am waiting to buy my whites, because apparently, club membership gives you a free playing shirt and a cap. I doubt very much that the cap will fit me, but it's exciting nevertheless.

I went to nets again on Thursday, after a break of a couple of weeks due to (a) half term and (b) the women taking their turn. It turns out that the women often don't have the numbers to justify a net session, but this is because some of them have county commitments. How cool is that?

My bowling was *somewhat ass* which I was a bit down about, but I felt like the batting went really well. I played some nice back foot shots off the quicker bowlers, and defended well against some accurate spin bowling. Mostly :-)

And here's a crucial difference between running and cricket. If you want to enter a race (with the exception of stuff like VLM) no-one ever says "bad luck mate, we've decided to give someone else a turn this time". But that's what I'm facing as the season approaches.

I've probably only seen about a third of the players in action at nets. Last season, 133 players represented the club in matches. Of these, 67 played for the men's teams. And even if all four of the weekend men's teams pick entirely different players, that's still only 44 places in any given weekend. And there are players who play both Saturday and Sunday games, so the number of places is that bit lower. And I'm a noob.

So there's an inevitable feeling of wonder and excitement about if and when I get my chance to play in matches. My last club was much smaller, and there was an unwritten rule that you'd be pretty much nailed on for a game at some point during the weekend, no matter what your ability. But now I'm competing for action against my own squad-mates. It's an aspect of team sports I had entirely overlooked. I wonder what will happen.

  • My experience from hockey, not cricket ...

67 doesn't sound that many across 4 teams, even if some play more than once.
I suspect, other than the real '1st team' - (whichever day in the higher league position) is relatively stable and the others rely on a core of 7 or 8 regulars and several fill ins. Even if they run as squads of 14 or 15, I suspect those wanting to play each week generally do.

But there's only one way to find out ...
And if you want to play each week, make sure you let them know.

(Oh, and another tip, if you say you'll play, best turn up, not drop out a few days before)

Do they have scorers/umpires? One way to wheedle your way in is to volunteer to do that on the weeks you might be 'rested'? But don't get lablled as scorer or umpire, or you'll never get back to playing.

If rested, let them also know (if you want) you're avaialble for a late call up if needed!

However, I did do scoring for the higher teams sometimes and even did play in the higher grades as an extra. My fielding ability was much better than my other cricketing abilities. I ended up getting a catch in every grade. No one else at the club could say that. Ended up getting a trophy for best clubsman or similar. 😀

  • The last club I played for fielded 3 man's teams on a Saturday and 2 on a Sunday, not sure how many players there were in total but it was a lot. The reason I started playing again was because as the season went on numbers diminished, a mixture of loss of early-season enthusiasm, holiday season and injuries, and I was needed to make numbers up which was cool as I got to play in the same team as my son. Which is a long way of saying I reckon you'll easily be a regular well before the season is over.

  • The best ability is availability, as they say. (I think the phrase was coined to reflect the problem of injured players, but I'm sure it equally applies to people who show up for training and are known to be reliable when picked to play) I did enjoy organising cross country teams at my previous school because anyone who turned up to training and wanted to take part in the races on a Saturday were able to represent the school. All the other sports we played were much more problematic because of limited squad/team sizes.

The 2025 Virtual Challenge is now open for sign ups!

10:25am, 10 Mar 2025
The 2025 challenge page is now ready for you to sign up :-)

This year's run/walk route has been put together by @CumbriAndy and celebrates the Fetch tradition of meet ups that run across bridges! :-)

The cycle route by @Snail includes several stages of the Vuelta a España, taking you on a windy route from Turin to Madrid.

The swim route this year takes you down the Colorado river (I contemplated going the other direction, but the current was a bit strong), and through the Grand Canyon.

You can sign up any time from now, but the races begin on March 30th, to coincide with the clocks going forward. The official end time is October 26th, but you can keep going past the end date for as long as you like. There are still people doing last year's challenge, and I'm still seeing traffic to the 2023, 2022 and 2021 editions.

As always, there are badges to collect for reaching each stage of each race - a whopping 38 badges if you do all three strands. Plus there'll be one for staying ahead of the pacer *at every checkpoint* of any of the races.

Sign up here and tell your friends:

Approve your followers :-) (and a Report button)

3:06pm, 7 Mar 2025
So following on from yesterday's blogs, I've been making some changes to improve online safety.

Firstly, a few people said that they'd like the ability to decide who got to follow them.

You can already decide *what* your followers get notified about in your settings here:

fetcheveryone.com/user-settings-visibility.php

but now when someone asks to follow you, you get the chance to approve or reject that request. A notification will pop up saying XYZ has asked to follow you, and it links through to a page where you can manage your follow requests.

You will all have received a lot of notifications telling you that your existing followers have requested to follow you. Basically, I've put everyone's followers back into a 'pending' state, so you have to approve them. There is an 'Approve All' button to save you having to click them all - or you can cherry pick the ones you want.

If you misunderstood these notifications, or have lost the page where you approve followers, here's a link to it:

fetcheveryone.com/followers-requests.php

--

Secondly, I've added a button to every post on the forum, which allows you to report unsafe content. Just click the button, choose the type of unsafe content you are reporting, and it'll come straight through to me. Based on stats for the whole of 2024, and indeed the preceding 20 years, I think it's homoeopathically unlikely that any of you will ever have to use this button - but it is there if you need it.

Response to your comments re: online safety

10:32pm, 6 Mar 2025
Wide awake (got home from cricket nets about half an hour ago, and I'm still wired), so I thought I'd respond to some of the comments on my previous blog. Thank you for all the compliments amongst the suggestions!

Sigh says: I think it would be good to have a single 'buddies only' option regarding content, which then applies to everything on a user's profile, and giving the user the ability to decide who can follow them. But that doesn't really address the things contemplated by this legislation.

Ironically, creating smaller groups through the buddy system potentially increases the risk of illegal content - because there are fewer eyes on what is being produced. So it brings greater personal freedom and privacy, but with a potential cost. Not that it's a bad idea, but one that needs contemplation to make sure it's done right.

Grast_girl says: Is it at the point where a few trusted users could be moderators (hide content temporarily until you can deal with it), so there's 24 hour coverage and you can get some sleep.

As per my comment on this, once you take away the parkrun idiot and the automated nonsense spam, there are really very few instances that required action. I think the group-reporting of spam works very well though (I'd say most spambot stuff gets cleared out within a couple of hours with no input from me), so perhaps I can look at trialling an extension of this to a general 'Report' button to temporarily hide content that requires a moderator's eyes.

Raetomic Kitten says: I know when very new users start posting there's an option on their posts to flag as potential spam, could a less intrusive option be abolished to flag general as unsafe? Along with the quote/block/pin buttons? And, maybe, a mechanism for warning any user that goes on a flag rampage reporting things that they simply disagree with (I promise not to flag anyone saying Brexit was a good idea, for example) rather than are genuinely harmful.

As per previous comment, I think a general Report button could work. I have already had people report false positives with the spam button, and in those cases I just revoked access to the button to those users. I think once folks got the hang of it, it could be useful.

LindsD says: I bet they were all on the Politics thread (the three).

You're forgetting the Joke of the Day thread :)

Diogenes says: To be serious for a moment, I did wonder what the sign-up process is these day? Do you still just have to enter an email address? Perhaps you could implement some kind of verification process that also required a minimum of information to root out the bots and spammers, and to ensure an account can be tracked back to an individual?

There's a test and a few traps to exclude the most basic of spambots. And a user must click a link in a welcome email in order to gain the ability to contribute to the forum. But tbh most days there are maybe 5-6 signups, and I get an email notification for each one. Often I can see the spambots coming before they know I'm on to them. It's fun to sit and watch them :-)

MsG says: You might be interested in how LFGSS forum is handling this (if you haven't seen already). As it was one person running it, who felt meeting the new requirements was too much; there's now a consortium taking over lfgss.com

Thank you, I will watch them with interest.

phal says: I agree with Sigh - I think there needs to be more choice by the user as to who can follow them - at the minute it sits with the person who wants to follow someone to tick a box and it happens (I know there are buddy settings for blogs and training details) but anyone can choose to follow you and your training pop up in their notifications. I think there needs to be an option where the user gets ‘**** is asking to follow you, are you ok with this?’ Especially as a user of the site you can choose to stay quite anonymous. Again, it’s not necessarily connected to the above, but it is a layer that I wouldn’t mind being considered. I have some followers now who I would choose not to have following me, but I can’t do anything about it, even though I’ve put everything I can behind the ‘buddy’ wall where I can choose who sees it.

I will definitely be implementing the option to accept or reject follow requests. I know it's been a feature request for a couple of months. I will see if I can do it tomorrow, and can even set *all* follow requests to pending, so that you have that option to silently ignore the ones you want to ignore.

MsG says: See feature request 1802 re activity privacy.

Let me see what I can do about that.

MsG says: Mumsnet recently was attacked a couple of times by malicious actors posting CSA images into threads late at night; with no overnight IT presence it took several hours for them to be taken down. The ability to upload pics was disabled, once re-enabled more were posted. They are currently working on additional security. Police are involved. Probably a deliberate attempt to target the users (mostly women not being able to sleep) and the site. Gives you an idea of what can happen out there, sadly.

There are some terrible people in this world. I think some of the extensions to the reporting mechanism will help counter this, although I suspect that Mumsnet is at least an order of magnitude higher profile than FE, and therefore correspondingly more of a target.

Dave W says: But there is now a facility for private conversations to take place. And that’s where there’s a greater possibility of nefarious goings on going on. I don’t know if you monitor any of the DM’s Ian. But that’s the area that would bother me most.

This is not a new facility - fmail has been around for at least 15 years. But I agree (and it's one of the risk factors mentioned in Ofcom's RA Guide) that it requires monitoring. I have a system in place that summarises the content of the DMs so that I can monitor it for illegal content.

  • As per comments below, I think the site appears to run really well, forums very friendly etc and when there have been issues you appear to have tactfully resolved. That said, reading these post/comments I did realise that my knowledge isn't as good as I thought and i had to research a bit to see the difference between friends and buddies and I'm still not quite sure what a follower can see that any other user can't. Would it be worth a simple one-pager to clarify/refresh and also include the settings that can be used to limit what some see. These were probably mentioned at the time they were introduced but i'm not sure they are necessarily obvious especially for a new user

  • @Snail a follower can’t see anything extra - they just get notifications. The buddy system on the other hand lets you give extra privileges to other Fetchies when it comes to viewing your content. Sounds like I need to make this clearer.

  • Thanks - agree re the target and Mumsnet. I think users there were surprised that a large commercial enterprise, didn't have overnight support /mods that could deal quickly with serious issues. They've had previous problems with doxxing amongst other things. Not suggesting any of that applies to this site, more for broader context.

Notable that bikeradar forum closed with just 1 weeks notice due to the laws.

There was discussions on R4 this morning:

    41m15s is the news item

1h51m40s is an interview with Dee who setup Lfgss as well as the Dad of a child whose death led to the laws being written, both have concerns the law is not fit for purpose, but for different reasons.

There's Ofcom person on later too, around 2h34m who reassures that they'd not be enforcing it heavily against smaller organisations where they act in good faith.

Online Safety Act

11:25am, 6 Mar 2025
I've spend a big chunk of time this week (and previous weeks) going through the guidance for writing a risk assessment to comply with the Online Safety Act. It's a lovely 84-page PDF that explains what is necessary in order for any site that allows user interactions to be compliant with the act.

Here's the guide, if you'd like to read it (I recommend just before bed, or after a heavy meal):

ofcom.org.uk

The guide identifies 17 different types of 'priority illegal content', with everything from terrorism to cruelty to animals. And there are 23 different risk factors associated with any site that facilitates interaction between users. Some of these don't apply to us e.g. there's no facility for you to livestream, but most are things that I needed to think about.

It seems that in order to be compliant with the act, one does not necessarily need to stop the bad stuff from happening, just record the risk! So it could be argued that the result is that smaller services like FE have to go through a lot of effort, when there's a very low risk; whilst the big services throw some lawyers at the compliance stuff, but don't necessarily deal with the cess pit of their online content.

But... even though all the evidence I've gathered suggests that there is a very low risk of unsavoury stuff on FE, it has helped me focus on making sure that the site does right by you as users. The process has highlighted areas where I could do some more monitoring; areas where I could offer a bit more protection; and generally brought a bit of structure to my thinking. Things have come a very long way since the halcyon days when the site burst from nowhere to take on the world (before taking it in the [ILLEGAL CONTENT REMOVED] from venture capital-backed services) :-)

And because (I hope you know this) I don't just pay lip service to keeping you safe and happy, I wanted to make sure that my internal review incorporates your feedback. The act is designed to protect you from illegal and harmful content online. So if you think there's anything I should be doing in order to help keep us all safe, I would be very pleased to hear it. As an example, this might be something that you'd like me to monitor more closely; or something you can control via your settings; or it could be about improving the way in which you tell me about your concerns. Anything really - I'm here to listen, and I don't want to just list the risks in some dusty document, I want to do all I can to minimise them. And yes, I know, you're all grown ups - but it's a big bad world out there, so let's do what we can to look after each other.

You can either leave a comment here, or if you'd prefer to do it quietly, feel free to contact me via the feedback mechanism (Help > Report A Problem): fetcheveryone.com/feedback-contact.php

  • I think it would be good to have a single 'buddies only' option regarding content, which then applies to everything on a user's profile, and giving the user the ability to decide who can follow them. But that doesn't really address the things contemplated by this legislation.
    Sigh

  • Is it at the point where a few trusted users could be moderators (hide content temporarily until you can deal with it), so there's 24 hour coverage and you can get some sleep.

  • I know when very new users start posting there's an option on their posts to flag as potential spam, could a less intrusive option be abolished to flag general as unsafe? Along with the quote/block/pin buttons?

And, maybe, a mechanism for warning any user that goes on a flag rampage reporting things that they simply disagree with (I promise not to flag anyone saying Brexit was a good idea, for example) rather than are genuinely harmful.

  • In terms of delegating moderation - I can tell you that last year I removed 176 posts out of 436,127. And 139 of these were the idiot trying to promote his inaugural parkrun group. 30 were automated spam, 4 were removed at the request of the author, and only 3 were removed due to poor user conduct or unacceptable content.

FWIW - I think you do a remarkably good job already. Unsafe/unpleasant/spam posts appear to be removed incredibly quickly. Furthermore, over the years I have observed you skilfully diffuse difficult/tense situations via a quiet word/tactful comment.

Perhaps you could implement some kind of verification process that also required a minimum of information to root out the bots and spammers, and to ensure an account can be tracked back to an individual?

  • I agree with Sigh - I think there needs to be more choice by the user as to who can follow them - at the minute it sits with the person who wants to follow someone to tick a box and it happens (I know there are buddy settings for blogs and training details) but anyone can choose to follow you and your training pop up in their notifications. Ooo that ended up quite long. Sorry….

  • Mumsnet recently was attacked a couple of times by malicious actors posting CSA images into threads late at night; with no overnight IT presence it took several hours for them to be taken down. The ability to upload pics was disabled, once re-enabled more were posted. They are currently working on additional security. Police are involved. Probably a deliberate attempt to target the users (mostly women not being able to sleep) and the site. Gives you an idea of what can happen out there, sadly.

    8:04pm, 6th Mar 2025
  • I agree with the person being followed as the arbiter of who follows them. That’s good sense.

As for the other areas of the site all the public areas I frequent seem pretty well behaved and any overtly nasty or malicious activity gets called out and flagged pretty quick.

But there is now a facility for private conversations to take place. And that’s where there’s a greater possibility of nefarious goings on going on. I don’t know if you monitor any of the DM’s Ian. But that’s the area that would bother me most.

  • My first thought at your comment ‘We’re all adults here…’ was ‘yes, but that doesn’t mean we’re not vulnerable’ and the friendly community we have here may make us more vulnerable if we almost forget that some people may not be as they seem….I also agree with Sigh’s comments about being able to choose if someone can follow you or not.
However, i think you do a fantastic job. Thank you!

I have entered a race!

3:21pm, 3 Mar 2025
Ok, so there's still a massive 9 weeks to go until the cricket season starts, and I need something to give me a bit of incentive to do plenty of running in that time. So I've entered the Flitwick 10k on April 13th. fetcheveryone.com/races/flitwick-10k-10882720

The organisers describe it as 'fast and undulating'. We'll see about that :-)

I was under the impression that it was the sort of local race that sells out straight away - but maybe that's changed a bit over the years.

That means I've got 6 weeks between now and race day - so that should help me get a bit of structure in my training. And with the weather getting a tiny bit warmer now, I'm hopeful that I can get some good miles in, and a bit of speed training too.

Goal-wise, it'd be nice to get somewhere close to 50 minutes. I ran 51:21 last spring, albeit off more mileage - but also unalbeitly with no speed training. So let's see what six weeks of focused effort brings. Apart from injured hamstrings, thank you please.

I know @Silvershadow and @Elsie Too are signed up, and I know of one more maybe that I won't out just yet... but anyone else fancy it too? :-)
