Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

An interesting offer has fallen my way, although possibly/probably not sensible. A friend/club mate is is doing the official 1.30 pacing for the Plymouth half. He wants company. Hardly any of the club are capable of it. I have run 1.29.33 there 7 years ago (not run it since as too bloomin expensive, I said I could do 1.31 jokingly, he said if I can do 1.29.xx it's a deal. Get free entry for the race. Aerobically I reckon I'm in 1.30/1.31 shape currently (although a week out from a marathon and it's in 2 weeks time, which is probably the biggest buffer - will I be recovered enough in time). I told him I'd go for a run tomorrow and see if I can keep the pace for a few miles, and check my HR. If I can, Would the shame of not being able to keep up the pace count for the extra minute I need? What do people reckon?

Worth a try Chris.

FWIW I think you can do it. You need to think the same though.

Chris - As you will have 3 weeks from last weeks mara i would think you will be pretty much recovered (you will know best) but then you are going to run an all out half. What will happen if you can’t keep the pace? Wil, the 1:30pcaer just kick on and leave you too it, if so then why not. If he is thinking he may not hold it and wants you to take over then maybe not 😂

Chris, what’s to lose? If you do hit 1.29.xx you also get the kudos of helping others round. If after 10 miles you have to drop off the pace you probably wouldn’t be alone and could offer moral support to some of the other ‘near misses’.

Don't blame you for considering it but it seems to me that most people don't appreciate having a pacer who struggles (and perhaps fails) to do the job properly.

If he just wants company, do it and cruise to sub 90. If he needs you as a pacer in case he needs to pull out, I'd be wary.

I ran with 2 sub 3 pacers at Chester, one who it was clear from early on was not going to complete the job despite having a 2:55 to his name. The 2:4x runner did his job perfectly. I didnt quite hang on but beat the 2nd pacer by a fair distance. It had no impact on the pacing group.

JDA - your honesty is appreciated... I do agree. The question is would they rather not have anyone at the back (which seems to be the alternative). I actually ran with the 1.30 pace group when I did my 1.29. I dropped off the back at 11 miles at 1.29 pace and the one pacer came back and got me and encouraged me. They did a great job and got me through. They actually stepped aside in the final straight and just encouraged us through. They left 7.30 for the final mile (as it was slightly uphill).

The guy who would be doing the pacing it just did a world record at London 2.41, while dressed as a scout. 1.30 is a stroll for him, no question would he be able to do it. He said he wants the company.

Anyway I'm gonna attempt 5 miles at that pace tomorrow morning on the flat, if I can't manage that, no point in considering it.
