Just for the conversation on Pacers.
I ran 37.57 with a target of 38 mins yesterday off a 19 min split at 5km.
One climb up to 4km so I calculated faster kms , give back for the climb and free money for the one descent.
A pacer needs to have done course prep

Ps. Make sure your pacer is properly comfortable for the pace . Too many are almost racing hence they sometimes fail.

I don't know how fast I can go on a half - I was amazed enough with 1:26, so anything inside 1:25 just feels far to far away. I've never thought of myself as being particularly speedy, but objectively my 5k and 10k times look stronger.

One of the two pacers at Chester for 3:15 two years ago was definitely finding it too tough on the day - whether he was just under the weather or he'd overstretched himself in terms of it being super comfortable.
Lots of admiration for pacers who get it right - I'd imagine it definitely takes a really thorough knowledge of the course, and (if possible) the people you're pacing. Athletically i could do it, but I'd be very fearful of lacking the ability to motivate the pacees appropriately.

Larks, like Uyuni says, you've got lots of bottom end speed (is that what I meant?!) you should do some track stuff. G

I do - I do 3000m on the track in the summer, with 1500m or 800m on the same day depending on what's on the timetable for our league matches. But I do the 3k first, so I'm always knackered for the shorter ones! Plus I may do 5000m at the county champs (not the day after an ultra though this time).
Problem is there is no track handy to train on, other than the 263m grass track in our park.

My 'pacer' yesterday (don't like writing that as feels a bit 'look at me' ish, but ultimetely, he offered to run the race at my target time!) is a 1:15 hm runner so sub-1:30 well within his caspabilities as a 'training run'! He's doing Manchester mara in 2 weeks time hence his offer!

The official sub-3 pacer for York in 2017 had a nightmare. All over the place pace wise to 20 miles and ended up walking considerable chunks to finish around 3:35. He was a 2:40 marathoner from the Spring of 2017 so shouldn't have been much of an issue for him - Just goes to show how much you have to respect the distance.
I was behind/infront/near him for much of it and I was on pace for 2:55 before less of a disastrous (but still pretty bad) crumble over the last 4-5 miles finishing in 2:59:45 for my first sub-3.

Really, that's stunning - I paced 3.10 the week after a 100km race. Was glad I wasn't asked to do 2.55 but have never fallen off the wagon when pacing anything that is miles from my PB.
