Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

As we all know, these benchmarks are utterly arbitrary, so well done on a great run - 75% WAVA for a half demonstrates that!

So - what's next, Clare?

I'm sticking with following a marathon plan to do Chester in May - outside target is a PB (1:26:25) but with a shaky start to the campaign and a reduced speedwork volume due to a niggly hamstring, I'm not currently confident of that. My PB was on a day when I got everything absolutely perfect (though with a big hill in it, some would argue it's not the fastest course - though I think it suits my approach), so it will be a big ask. But 6:35s all the way frightens me currently!!

Wow, 10th overall Clare, that's awesome. I hope you're very proud of that. Not a level that many (any?) of us blokes in here can achieve. Nice. :-) G

Thanks all. I'm pleased as I know it was out of my league and couldn't have run better, plus I didn't detonate, I just wasn't fast enough on the hills. If I'd gone out too fast, ran the last few miles slowly or missed it by seconds, I'd have been disappointed.

Not sure what's next tbh, feels like a bit of an anti-climax. I need to have a few days rest and get my thoughts together. I've got several options for my next focus, not all mutually exclusive. The 2 HMs I've got planned are not sub-90 attempts - Compton Verney in June is not a fast course and Kenilworth in early Sept is straight after a 2 week holiday so highly unlikely. In the very short term, I've got a 10k on Easter Monday that I'd like to have a good crack at - it's a flat fast course I'm told so no PB attempt but a good strong race to start the summer road race league will be good, then on 12th May we have the Hilly 100 which is a team relay around the Cotswold, clue in the title, 10 x 10 mile legs starting at 5am! I think I'm being put on the final 'glory' (aka high pressure!) leg so I want to run my absolute best on that.

5km PB (it's 5 years old and you were within 12 secs of it a few weeks ago?) 80% WAVA (you're over 78% now, aren't you? Awesome!) 10km sub 40 (or is that a bit far?) Don't know which is higher / harder 40 min 10km or 90 min half? You're running really well just now. Just keep enjoying strong race results! :-) G

40min 10k way harder than 90min half, would be my personal opinion. Backed up by fetch standards which for my age equates 40:11 to 1:27:29 for 74% WAVA.

Just keep knocking out good WAVA grades would be my approach - though I'm fortunate in that for the moment the headline grabbing sub 20, sub 40, sub 90 arbitrary time targets are either in the bag or achievable without having to get close to my PBs at those, so perhaps I have a skewed view of things. If I was regularly pushing myself to my best at 20:25 or 92 minutes etc, maybe I'd see those targets more as obstacles.

You need to be targeting 80% WAVA like clare larks, you lazy so and so! ;-)

Even though these times are arbitrary, it's amazing how we set ourselves these targets and are disappointed / frustrated with not getting them or conversely obsessed with chasing them. Beguiling. :-) G

80, LOL! Actually, last few years I've gone 68, 70, 74, 75 overall fetch standards, so no harm in targetting 76 for this year for me. 5k and 10k look achievable, HM would be a stretch (but if you'd asked me after Snowdonia, I'd have said I'd go for it), marathon is just a joke!! Plus if I run these after the summer, my biological clock has ticked into an easier profile!

Extracting from fetch standards:-
(80) 5:08 17:51 29:31 37:10 1:00:57 1:20:55 2:48:17
(76) 5:24 18:48 31:04 39:07 1:04:10 1:25:11 2:57:09
(75) 5:28 19:03 31:29 39:39 1:05:01 1:26:19 2:59:30
(74) 5:33 19:18 31:55 40:11 1:05:54 1:27:29 3:01:56

Apart from marathon, all very doable for you, surely? You've got the 5km already (near enough), that's a tough but doable 10km for you. Half just under 1:21. Eeep! :-) G

Get entering some track miles lark, and see how fast your little legs can get you round. If you can manage 5:08 you'd deserve a good lie down afterwards :-)
