Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Hello folks, I would like to try and improve my half time of 1.51 this year and have entered Oxford half in October. Can anyone recommend a training plan to help me?

Not really, but I hope this bumps the thread back up.

I've run my best half times during marathon training. So I suppose lots of slower long runs, speed work sessions thrown in, and medium runs with a chunk at HMP effort has worked for me.

Resuscitating this thread from distant history. But seems more appropriate as 1:40 is beyond my aged legs.

Ran 1:50:47 chip in Jan on a relatively tough, hilly HM course, and 50:36 yesterday in a local (Auckland, NZ) 10k race (hilly & convoluted!). Didn't start running until mid-60s over 10 years ago, so the 1:50:47 is my lifetime PB for HM!

Have an HM coming up in 3 weeks (Auckland Waterfront HM). Finally a chance to run on a flat course 🤸. Prep has been far from ideal but definitely aiming for sub-1:50 this time 🤞.

Last week was light (10k taper week) and this week probably also (post-10k). Not leaving much time before HM! Fast parkrun next Saturday, followed by 20k plus long on Sunday sound OK? Or is that too much too after my 10k?

Well that post didn't gain much traction!

FWIW I did (just!) achieve sub-1:50 in the above half marathon yesterday (1:49:53, 2025 WAVA c. 79.3%). Also a PB by a slim margin. Second out of 21 M70+, 27 sec behind the 70 year old who came in first (WAVA 72%). Third a further 7+ minutes behind. I had hoped to do better given the course was flat (like WAVA over 80%!) but too many other commitments and had not put in the training required. Only two 'long' runs and very few faster reps in the lead up.

Well done @NZD especially if you felt you hadn’t done the training you would have wanted to do
