I think I was hoping for almost an overnight easing of symptoms, but that didn’t happen after the first block for me, but it does for others I’ve spoken to. I think it, alongside very regular stretching and strengthening is what helped mine, but honestly I don’t think the shockwave helped in isolation. I think it helped me do more stretching/exercises, which possibly I wouldn’t have been able to do without it, if that makes sense. But we’re all different as one of my club mates says he noticed very quick improvement, so it’s a case-by-case basis I think. Good luck with it - I will say it was very painful having it done on the plantar, as they get the exact point of the pain and target it. But it’s over quickly, so worth it.

Thanks for the detailed info - if my achilles worsens, it may be something I'll need to consider as an option in the future.

Visit to physio on Wednesday and he did a few test on both legs including a power meter test to see how week/strong the left Achilles is. The peak force on my right leg was 5.95kg and on my left (injured side) was 2.66kg a 76.3% difference. He did a little bit of shockwave therapy that sounded like a pneumatic drill (a try before you buy session as he put it). Decided on a few other things such as heel drop on daily runners and putting heel raising inserts in my other shoes. He was happy for me to keep running and keep doing my plyometrics and other strengthening work. The shockwave therapy he did wasn’t too painful but I was aware of it. Got first proper session next Thursday.

You’ll be about a week ahead of me @riggys99 Interesting that your physio is ok with you running after your “taster”. I wonder if that will be the case after next Thursday? Mine has said that I should not run once treatment starts and that it’s likely to be around 6 weeks after the third session that I can start again. It’s not an issue at the moment, because since I came off painkillers from Saturday, there’s no way I could run just now. In other news I can confirm that I still don’t enjoy cycling. A ‘cruel summer’ lies ahead indeed, if I can’t run. Just wondering if there is an existing “achilles thread” that we should be using, to leave this channel clear for the able? *goes off for a furgle around* |

Does shockwave hurt afterwards as well? (Appreciate the treatment itself is painful). (No objections to the Achilles chat here btw!) |

In my case (PF), I wouldn’t say it hurt afterwards particularly. It felt bruised, I suppose, but only for a day or so. It wasn’t bruised, but that’s kind of the feeling I had. I was also encouraged to keep trying to run, but I suppose it’s different advice for different injuries. |
