Really good rhb :)

SPR - usually I have 9, 12 and 15s and an old pair of 9s as the season progresses to give me something shorter...

Cheers both. Fwiw I ditched spikes in favour of xtalons last year, most of our courses at maccl have hard path sections which I hate having spikes on for, even if just a few steps!

The Kent league started yesterday too. There's been no real rain for ages so the ground was like rock. I ran in Salomon Fell Raisers. They seemed just a bit more cushioned than my spikes.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a pair of spikes into which you can insert orthotics? I have taken out insole in xtalon and inserted my orthotics successfully, but my spikes don't have removable insoles!! There are a few races (eg National) where I would prefer spikes to xtalon, and since developing Morton's Neuroma last year I need my orthotics!!

Anyone else at Boggart Hole Clough this weekend? I'm in my debut season over XC having spent many years watching the kids do it (some of them quite well!) but with a very squeamish personal attitude to mud so I've avoided it. Now that eldest is in the U20s so I have to be around for the final event of the day, I thought I might as well run them all too. Heaton Park was a bit of a tame introduction, I doubt Boggart will be on the basis of the walks through there that I've done with the kids!

@ancient - do the orthotics have any effect when paired with the type of ground you'd be running over in XC races? I know the general advice around trail shoes etc is that concepts like support etc go out of the window, so I'd presumed the same would apply to spikes for XC (particularly if you just race in them, and don't train in them a lot).

Ancient, I don’t suppose the fact that the insoles are not designed to be removed would stop you getting them out if you really wanted to. You’re not likely to try putting them back in are you?
I recall ripping them out of some Nike shoes in the past in order to dry them more quickly, and I did get them back in. It was only a few spots of glue holding them in.

I wear orthotics for most road training runs and also put them into my inov8s for general 'trail' / hybrid runs. However I'd never put them into my xc spikes... the spike shoes are very minimal so the orthotics wouldn't fit, plus there's no real need to stability correction in XC as it's so uneven underfoot - your ankle strength will do the 'compensation'. I think orthotics are built to correct your gait on (flat) hard surfaces.

That said, women's xc races here are only 6k max so it's never that far - I've never tried running 10k or more in my spikes - though people obviously do! If you're not happy then you may be better racing the xc in your xtalons?

Good start to XC for me today. Was muddy in places and legs weren't really ready for it as not done anything strenuous for last 5 weeks after National road relays but general shape is ok. 4th counter for my club. New 10k PB as well as my current one is weak 😂.

Enjoyed the bog that is Boggart Hole Clough today. Started at the back which necessitated at least one complete stop due to congestion, but cruised on through the field building some confidence about this new venture for me.
