My club is the same. 100 members but less than 10 of us have done a XC event. We have a choice of West Glam or Gwent league with 3 fixtures within 20 minutes drive, another 2 within a 30-40 minutes and the rest not much more than an hour. However, 25 of our club have signed up for a multi-terrain 10 miler this weekend which is a good hours drive for most?!
Our numbers have picked up steadily in the last couple of years (along with everyone else's so the league races are quite crowded this year!) - it is interesting hearing how other leagues organise things. We find that people seeing which club members are doing certain things is a good way of widening the appeal - the more 'ordinary' runners - like myself - who are spotted amidst the very speedy ones, the better as far as turnout is concerned. helps
Last Sunday we had a race that was basically a flat 2 lapper round a park. But on each lap, you had to run down an embankment, through a brook and up the other side. Twice. That's 4 crazy, death defying, acts of sheer madness. One of our supporters filmed us and stuck it up on the club FB page. Grins and hysterical laughter all round
I think this Saturday I was inwardly smiling! I surprise myself in XC how kamikaze I become on the downhill and through hazards.
Here is some footage of the ditch at we ran through at Leamington the other week, and a chap who lost his shoe. Bad enough without people stepping on you and a small dog going bonkers at you. I like the crowds reaction when he finally gets it!
