Thanks, all. Just looking for that re-assurance that my thinking is in the right ballpark. Funny how we still need that even after all the races and kʻs we put in to this "simple" sport. Chur!

Sometimes we need that Mark, even though we’ve all done dozens of these things. Don’t get me started on remembering what my pre-race nutrition should be…..it’s like I have my memory erased every time! Next 5k for me is actually my 1st ever track race on 25th June. Could be interesting. Looks like 90s laps = 18:45 so there’s an obvious target there. It’s nuts really to be running round a track that slowly but it is an old folks race so I’ll be in company. Talking of running slowly, Tim Grose of YouTube / RunBritain fame ran the 5k I raced last week. He took video of the whole race - I am in front of him for the opening km and I look hilariously slow! |

The disconnect between how fast something feels and what it looks like on video is alarming. I had what felt like a lightning fast finish at the end of a 10.5 mile race on Saturday. My wife kindly caught it on camera, and I look like I'm running through treacle!

I have been in your shoes. My wife caught my marathon finish on camera once, and I thought I was speeding up. It sure didn't look that way !

It's amazing isn't it? You look down at your perfectly formed legs, you watch them stride confidently forwards thinking you look as good as Mo Farah in full flight; then you see the video clip.

@Mark J 🇳🇿 what worked for me was doing only easy runs the week before the race and slightly less volume. I ran around 18:40 for 5k today in a 6.3k race. 14/1000 overall and the top step of the M50 podium. |

Looking much faster! m.youtube.com I clicked on the link and watched it and thought ok it looks 'slow' but form looks good, then I realised it's a marathon video and a 2:56 one at that! Going over the page, I'm the same as WW. If I'm going to have a rest day it's either the day before the day before or the day before that, never the day before the race. |
