I don't profess to be an expert either but I have done a fair bit of reading regarding HRM training and I use a HRM virtually every day.
210 is crazily high. This will be due to either:
1) A glitch in the communication between chest strap and watch (more common in cheap ones). 2) You ar one of those people with very high heart rate.
The first one is the most plausible in your case Santa. You mention 55 as your average, I assume this is just walking about at work? If so, it's very normal which would tend to rule out that you have a naturally higher heart rate.
Nice hills, SB, lovely - do wonders for your running. They rock apparently (ask Gobi).
Rebel, sounds great, keep up the good work! Glad to hear of your progress, great stuff

Oh almost forgot. SB, make sure you wet the strap when you put it on - there will be two little ribbed patches on the side of the strap that goes on your skin, these are the contacts and are best made wet to ensure a good contact.

I'm going to echo what Ian said SB - sounds like a poor connection to your skin to me - make sure it's relatively tight to your skin and you wet it a bit. I now know when mine's not reading properly so i have a little wiggle to get some sweat onto it, or wet my thumbs and rub it a bit. (This sounds like a post for the boobie thread lol!)
From the sounds of it, your easy run av pace should be around 150ish, but you need to do a max HR test before using it effectively, until then it's all numbers. You never know, your max could be 210+, max HR is not a measure of fitness.
Save it until after sunday though

Excellent run this morning. 2 hours 30 minutes and heart rate didn't even make it to 70%, despite me upping the speed after the first hour and again for the last half an hour. Easy peasy

Thanks . Actually I've wondered whether my Garmin has it right when calculating what percentage I'm running at. According to the instructions it sez it calculates automatically after seeing how you run a couple of times. I really can't run any slower than I do and it sez I run between 80-90%. At least since I slowed down it doesn't go higher than that. I will be doing my max HR next week so maybe that will tell me I have a higher than average HR anyway. In that case how do I tell my Garmin that its calculations are wrong?

Rebel, just to see if your Garmin is accurate or not, maybe you can find someone with whom to swap devices. (Oh dear,' swap devices', I'm sure I won't get away with saying that.)
It still very early in the morning here, and I haven't gone for a run yet, but yesterday was a busy one. Ran a short recovery run after Sunday's 11 miles, then played basketball for an hour. Later in the day, played football (the American style) for a couple of hours. Moving slowly this morning, sore especially in the quads and hip flexors. At 50 years old, I am supposed to know better, but I keep saying yes when they ask me to play.
