I accept it's a fairly niche critique of p&d.

But I really don't like intervals at 5k pace!

But they're not 5k pace are they? They're 3k-5k pace. Though in practice I do them at the fastest pace I can actually achieve a consistent set.

What larks said. I tended to do them quicker than 5k too. :-) G

Wandering over here as well from the Sub 3:45 thread..

I'm another P&D 18 week up to 55 miles candidate with an April marathon (haven't signed up for it yet though!)

Currently base training (from P&L) and up to 5x weekly miles aleady but I won't attempt 55-75 as I don't like the doubles in there (tried it before) and I did ok off of the 55 miles one in the past. I will likely start with slightly longer MLRs.

I actually like the long run post 10k race combination - maybe because I have good memories of a 10k PB followed by a mara PB a couple of weeks later.

I'm not so keen on the intervals, I've never raced a 5k and anything faster than 10k pace seems scary - I just try to do them larkim style (fastest pace for a consistent set).

I think the base miles, the total mileage, the long runs, the mid length midweek runs and the MP and tempos are all more important (in that order) than the intervals, imho, for marathon.

So I don't think you lose/miss much if not hitting the intervals hard Hazelnut. :-) G

I'm also okay with doing long runs the day after a race. This spring, I did that several weeks, racing on Saturday and then run a slow 13-15 miles the next day. I'm just going to take my time to find my stride and ignore the pace for the first 5 miles.

I'm already up to 40 mpw so I should be fine with the plan. I'm flexible over Christmas, I'll move the sessions around as it fits into my holiday plans. Proper training will start on 2 January.

On a long run day, I did my 10K race (PB) in the morning, then 12 miles in the hills in the afternoon in the snow and ice, to make up for the fact that it was meant to be a long run day! :-) G

then this (11.3 miles, not 12! Though with warm up and cool downs, it was 20 for the day. I was on 55-70 plan though. Was averaging 70 mpw for about 3.5 months!)

That’s impressive. If you can stay injury free then go for it. What I learnt From my 2020 experience is that I’ll be taking taking it easy for at least two days after a 10k race.

I wouldn't do it now Cam! 10 years older, 10 years wiser, 10 years more brittle! :-) G
