When I do the strides, I do them *after* the easy run that P&D prescribes, and then do them as straigh 6/8/10x100m accelerating sprints, maintaining good form and pace for the last 30m or so. Turning those into 10s hill sprints wouldn't be so much different I suppose. For me the effect is partly psychologicial - just doing some "fast" running at the end of an easy run is quite "nice". I remember when Pete Pfitz was on the marathontalk podcast he advised that if he was writing the books again he'd just throw in a load more strides. Whether my approach of effectively having a sprints session at the end of an easy run is correct, vs the strides incorporated into the easy run that I know a lot of people do, I don't know!! |

I listened to that podcast after you mentioned it on the sub 3:15 thread Larkim. I think he also said that either of the two methods you have just said are correct. I do either depending on the route and/or the weather. For example on a cold wet day I will do them in the last half mile or so especially if dressed for a slower run

Agree Larkim that HR bands are wide and can lead to misinterpretation especially when using HR Reserve without proper testing of max and min HR.

That's the most common failing for all HR based training is just using estimates, esp for your max HR which varies wildly from runner to runner. Min HR is easy enough to see esp with modern HR that is sampling all the time. But Max HR requires a specific (and rather unpleasant!) test to obtain. Most people don't put the effort in to find it. Not P&D's fault, per se, of course. ![]() |

The way I estimated my max HR is to use the highest I have got it to go in a race (normally 5/10k) especially if I have tried a sprint finish (and looking how high it goes just after the end of the race to allow for cardiac lag) Probably not the most scientific way of doing it. |

Sorry if been asked previously (I'm sure it will have been), but I'm planning to loosely follow the up to 55mile 18 week plan. I'm planning on targeting sub 3, have people had much success with the 55mile plan for that? Also the longest run is 20miles, I've always been told that you should be doing up to 23ish. What are peoples thoughts around that? |
