About Me | |

Started running March 2013 to try to build my fitness for field hockey. My initial goal was to be able to run around the 'big block' which was one mile along each side. Eventually was able to do that, though slowly. What to do next? Try faster or longer? Faster seemed out of reach, so ran longer. In May 2013 ran farther than ever before: 10km. Apart from 12km later that month I didn't run that far again until Dec 2013. Eventually thought about trying to run as far as a half marathon. Took a while to do that, pondered what next and was drawn to trying to do a marathon. Ran my first marathon in Nov 2016, and have gone on to run three more marathons and three ultras (56km, 56km, 50km).

Doing some Pokémon Go routes. Starting raining on the first lap. I was surprised by how quickly I was going at the start of the second lap. Each lap being a bit over 1.4km. When I saw 4:20/km on my second lap I thought it didn't seem as fast as that. I put it down to being a bit downhill. (Very slight.) When I checked again a bit later it was 4:25/km on a very slight uphill and about half way through the lap. Thought this seems really fast. I was drenched by this point. Thought that this could be a fast mile for UTMOST if I am able to continue and remember correctly. Had a vague idea that 8:00 for a mile would be good.
Since I hadn't looked at my watch at the start of the second lap to note the distance, I was unaware of how far I needed to actually go. Given the lap was about 1.4km I thought another 300m would be needed past the end of the lap. At around 1.3km I felt I was slowing down. Just need to keep going. Try to maintain form. Don't trip over now. Got to the end of the lap. Now another 300m. Keep running. Surely that's enough. I hope so. I start walking. I worry that it wasn't 1 mile. I jog a bit more. I later check and I did a mile in 7:15. It looks like the fastest part doesn't include walking so I had run far enough. It gave me one extra point in UTMOST. 🙂 It must have been under or equal to 7:27.
