"Traditional"-style running club in the North of England, is it?

I'd say all of this is par for the course.

Must be a field size thing splitting it into 2 - so why not an "elite" for under 20 mins and "others" for us mere mortals? Sweeping ageism doesn't help.

Back to the first post "very close to 50" - are you sure?

I've only run one 5k (Age 43 = 22:26). Now, am I slow in that it was just over 22 minutes or am I assumed fast in that I am under 60?

It isn't very well put together is it, but Yorkshiremen are known to speak their mind.

Yup, worse than stupid. Any random youngster who has never run a step but *thinks* they could run 5km in about ten minutes could run in the "fast" race, whereas a FV50 who's regularly knocking out sub-20 for 5km would be consigned to the *slow* race.

Run Britain rankings have 113 V50+ ladies breaking 22 mins this year and 255 V60+ men.

The fastest 3 women in my club are vet 50+ females. They are all exceptional runners.

Or ... poorly phrased though it may be, ensuring that those in the classes specified get an actual head to head, fighting for the front, competitive race within their cohort as opposed to being somewhere in the pack? I've sometimes thought I would like a race where I am competing for positions rather than being somewhere towards the back (although the cut off would have to be rather slower than 22 minutes for that to happen).

Of course there will probably be an FV50 and an MV60 who spoil it for everyone by running sub 20 :-P

Still, at least they're being ageist AND sexist, not just one or the other. Thereby maximising the number of people they piss off.

I'd have much less of an issue if they had simply said "Race 1 for M-MV60 and F-FV60, Race 2 for everyone else" to keept he age cats head-to-head. Calling it "fast " and "slow" and implying that the criteria are based on speed and ability is asking for trouble.
