The former owners of our house put an electric fence around the top of the garden walls to keep their cat in and other cats out. We've been here just over 7 years now, but the local cats seem to have long memories (or are sensible enough to avoid our dogs...) so we aren't troubled with feline visitors. Our kittens are housebound so far and will likely stay so because Miso has the makings of a brutal killer. I can see it in her eyes. It's dog owners that are the bigger bugbear for us - those who let their untrained beasts off lead in the surrounding nature reserves, to disturb the ground nesting birds and tear up the delicate mossy ecosystem, not to mention harass the rule observing on-lead dogs like ours and then yell at us (the owners, not the dogs) for trying to fend them off. Also those who don't pick up their dogs' shit and just leave it all over the streets of the village, including all around the dedicated dog shit bins, so responsible owners can't get at them to dispose of our own animals' waste. Bah, and humbug, I say to them. |

I like the idea of an electric fence to keep bastard shitting cats out.

[Gosh Raemond, I'm surprised re your dog poo problem. Around here, pick up is pretty near universal.] Dutch people don't tend to be anywhere near as conscientious, sadly. |

I think it is becoming more and more socially unacceptable to leave dog mess around - the quicker that process continues the better. Which just makes it strange that it is totally socially acceptable to have a cat and let it mess wherever it likes. My views on cats are coloured by when our children were young and we had play bark under their climbing frame in the garden. This was when I was most active with a vegetable garden. It was also when our next door but one neighbour - in a terrace with no front garden and a small back yard - had 14 cats. Trying to spot cat turds in play bark, or harvesting veg from among the turds is obviously my favourite thing |
