Its hard to tell from the stats given Big G, but as a comparison my max HR is c184 and I would expect my MP HR when well trained to be around 160

Bazoaxe, thanks for the info. PtB, below are the stats from that session. I called it a "tempo run", as that is what it was billed as by the club....but I don't really know what my "tempo" pace is. I've added all the stats as although it was an out and back, you can see there was some elevation. Also, it wasn't evenly paced as it was a -ve split, but it didn't feel like it was an all out effort, although 2 or 3 of us were pushing the pace a bit in the last mile or so. |

It’s a tough one Big G, I’ve trained to HR in the past, almost religiously keeping the HR under 70% max for 80-90% of my running but recently I’ve started paying it less attention. I still look back on it after a run, and am mindful of my HR of what I consider a recovery, easy, tempo, threshold run but I don’t worry if I’m going from easy to steady, etc. I know that once I get up toward my threshold I better be very near the end of a marathon. My max HR is probably around 168 now, and I think over miles 10-20 my HR is usually mid 140s at my marathon pace. Once it gets up to 147 I know I’m working hard and anything beyond that I’m really pushing the threshold (I think the LT turnpoint for me is 148-152 depending on my training). Saying all that I often wonder if I’m not just a bit soft when it gets late in races, I rarely feel I’ve been in the pain cave that others mention. I’ve been to the door of that cave, but backed away slightly (dropped pace) to keep myself out of it until right at the end. |

I think it's normally easier to try to identify a likely Half-Marathon pace generally, from training numbers. Then how an individual might convert that to a Marathon is a question wider than just HR/pace, but also training volume / at what pace / history of conversions / consistency etc. From your 5k time trial and that 5m tempo, 6:45 seems like a plausible aim for HMP. Does that feel about right? If so, then 7:15 +/- 10s depending on how you fit with those extra marathon complexities discussed above. |

PtB, I've never actually gone under 90-mins for a Half, but if I raced one tomorrow I'd aim to go under that, so on that basis I suppose 6:45-ish is in the right ball park. Thanks for the info. Brunski, thanks. I think the closest I've come to entering the cave was one year I did Loch Ness. Although not a PB, that one broke me. When I did my marathon PB though, there are pics of me towards the finish and I'm looking around and seem quite relaxed, which I suppose shows I had something left. I've done a few marathons but I think for me I'm still wary of the distance for some reason; possibly worried that it'll be bite me and I'll end up in the gutter somewhere! I don't really have the "fear" for the Half, although I don't race that many of them. |

Remember that scene in Trainspotting, when Spud wakes up in his girlfriend's bed, and enjoys the briefest moments of calm, before realising... Well that was my attempted at breaking 3:15 this morning. Pulled the plug at 22. It was only going one way at that point, and saw little to gain from a four mile slog home. Legs, and arms had basically seized up. Not sure what the issue was, pace was punchy but not ridiculous, I was conscious about fuelling. But it was clear from very early on that I was not going to have the day I was hoping for. On the bright side, a kick up the arse every so often isn't necessarily a bad thing, and if you're going to have a car wreck, better it happen on a training run than in a race. For anyone that may need a laugh, target pace was 7:15. fetcheveryone.com/training/18989510 |

Good effort nonetheless, and good data to look back on. Not so much a failed marathon attempt as a good solid MP effort ![]() |

Incredibly hard to do a best effort in a training run. So many more things to help on race day - adrenaline, others to chase/pace, folk handing out water n goodies, people cheering. Very hard to replicate in a training run for a time. Great effort Paul. ![]() |

I had one marathon go similarly (https://www.fetcheveryone.com/t-3418131). But I could not imagine, ever, trying to run a hard marathon in a training session. You're a brave man. Your HR actually drifts down as the pace drops off. Was it at 'normal' expected level during the first half (in which case 'something' leg-related probably wrong), or is it elevated even then? (indicating you carrying a bug, other stress, or hungover). "Leg-related"? Different surface? Different shoes? Bad form for some reason? Not much/enough training at this pace? |
