What he says is correct - with my old mudclaws I had to stick compeed / plasters on my heels under my socks and if any of this bandaging got wet and moved I would have a 50p sized blister on my heel.... (thick / thin socks no difference) until El Bee! told me of the kettle trick. After I had "steamed" I wore them for about an hour round the house to help mould them.
Difficult to say how well it worked as A) Out of paranoia I still taped up anyway B) I only ran a couple more XCs post-kettling as it was the end of the season. The shoes then gave up in other areas so now I have got a new pair of Mudclaws (the red ones) which feel far softer and much more comfy in the upper.
Am trying them out tomorrow @ Winsford XC (N Staffs League), it has been chucking it down here all day but the XC is about 50 miles away - hopefully will be nice and sloppy though!

XC season started yesterday for me. Works team on a pancake flat football pitch in Manchester. Hopefully I'll be able to get a few club runs in as well this winter.

Well I'm fairly cack at XC running (I use the term running lightly)....but thought folk might want to know that there's a massive free outdoor gear sports catalogue with this Novembers copy of TRAIL magazine. I bought it for the Scotland backpack article. 3.99 for the mag and the free catalogue, worth 3.99 apparently, is free. Got some nice socks in it

it's usually what separates my achilles from my calf, but it's real running. Bring on the first puddle.

Yes (sigh), I will be re-humiliating myself again at the local Round The Castles series. The one and only downside of joining Fetch is that now people will know who I am (sort of) when I stagger in over the line in last place. It is however, justifying me a new pair of breeks n runners from wiggle this week

As well as deciding not to run Hampshire league and not to run Oxford mail league as I am doing marathons on 3 of the 5 race weekends today I discovered I can do the Berks Bucks and Oxon champs either.
Possible I will do between 0 and 3 XC races now.
If you are really doing XC I would recommend that people don't bother with trail shoes and buy spikes

far be it from me to disagree with the DEVIL, but i personally think that for most of us slower runners the trail shoes or fell shoe is a better option as they are more versatile and will get a lot more use. the difference in time that i would gain from spikes is fairly meaningless at my present speed. and i hate changing the spikes, too fiddly and in the long run more expensive
