Yeah, but we've got a club of wimps (this is a sweeping statement and in no way actually really true ;-). They (a) don't like doing "off-road" (as if XC is properly off-road anyway) and (b) won't do 2 races in a weekend and (c) if the race is more than 2 mins from their house and puts them into a slight inconvenience or under some pressure of running for the club rather than themselves, then they won't do it.
Basically, it's a long-winded way of saying that half the people who *might* run for the club in something like the Nationals in Nottingham would rather run for themselves at Snake Lane the next day. We could only drum up a dozen men's runners for the Nationals when it was in Leeds.....

I'd mind less if those who purport to be "purely" road runners would show some inclination to run, say the yorkshire or northern road relays and those who say they *only* run fells, would run the fell relays.
I've also tried to get a number of people to *try* orienteering, but they're too afraid to do that as well.

All clubs are like that about something, no club can cover everything! Athletes come before club duties anyway. We wont have a team for nationals I reckon but no worries, I'm just going for the experience

I'm in the process of changing clubs for this very reason! Got sick of being the only lady racing!

It's a strange one, a lot of runners will do the local XC league, and also come 5000th in a mass participation road race... but won't do a big XC because they don't see the point of coming 900th in it. I guess the lack of PB potential in the big XC might be the difference.

I think the key to getting teams out for xc is start with the low key stuff and build up! It is quite scary for the slower runners knowing you could easily be at the back, when in a road race there will be 1000s behind you. Getting a team out builds the level of shared experience and increases the fun in a "why are we doing this" kind of way.
All I would like this season is 5 runners for each of our 4 league events, so far I have 11 or so for the first which is ace Most of us wont be racing as we have a big race the next day but its all good. Hope it continues.

I spent about 3 years trying to persuade people to race but tbh not a lot of women race full stop in my club anyway. It was a hard decision but I decided it's not really the club for me & I'm changing to one that is!

XC and another race on the weekend would NEVER happen for me. That's a pretty tough ask IMO.
