Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I race XC on my fell shoes... mind you, the courses around here are very fell like, so it suits :-)

quimby, as Jacobi says - it's all about the grip.

There are some hills you just don't stand much of a chance getting up or down safely without spikes in some courses.

On others your feet will slip about in mud even with spikes - I can't imagine what it would be like with out them.

I had walshes which I wore for one race, then bought some spikes and never looked back - they just give me so much confidence on descents and corners

I may well have a trip to the running shop next weekend and kit myself out for the rest of the season. I love descents, but having even more confidence of not slipping would be great - I can overtake even more people. :-)

I tested my new Inov8 X-talon fell racing shoes to the extreme today. They are advertised as ideal for x-country as well as short fell races... Well, they provided absoletly excellent grip on all but deep mud, over which they float, as opposed to the Mudclaw 270s, which actually grip into it. I'd definitely recommend them as a x-country racing shoe, but... that is on our type of terrain...

One thing I saw at the Cardiff X-Challenge in January interested me. some of the boys were using football boots which struck me as odd until I thought about it a bit - at that age if they are playing football anyway they are going to get a lot more wear for their parent's money.

Doing 6 XC this year. Guy in our club cajoles us into them. Good man! Should I try and use my middle distance track shoes with 15mm spikes or my Inov-8 mudclaws, with nice deep grip, but not as grippy as 15mm spikes? Any advice gratefully received!

I would use the Claws Happy, but then again, I have never used spikes so no idea what they would be like... and around us we get quite a bit of rocky stuff thrown in, so I none of us wear spikes...
