Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Yes, like the Mudrocs... they also dont stick on wet rock! And I cannot wear walshes, they kill my heels somehow :-(

This year I'll be losing my XC virginity :-)

Any advice? How do these things work?

My advice for XC is wear proper XC spikes, in my experience trail shoes DO NOT work in XC, they are too heavy have no grip.

You probably need to get another set of spikes to go along with the ones that come with them, maybe the next size up in length for when it is muddier etc.

I think I use the Adidas Neptune, mine are around 2 years old, cushioning is not as important since most of the time you are running on mud/grass. My running style is slightly different during XC since the spikes don't have a thick wedge of a heel.

Most XC spikes last for a long time, just make sure you put vaseline on the screw end of the spikes before you put them in to stop them getting stuck.

I have gained a pair of Inov8 Mudclaws and they are even better than the Mudrocs in muddy stuff. The studs are really aggressive so excellent grip in muddy stuff and on wet rock!

i suppose it depends on the course. our first XC of the season could be run in carpet slippers, it's a parkland grassy setting. the XC we put on might need an aqualung this year.

i find walshes the best, got fed up with spikes weariing down and many courses have hard paths to cross. mind i'm not trying to win the races.

Our first XC of the season *last* year (Essex League @ Stubbers) had A Small Puddle. Just one. People were trying to run into it to justify not wearing racing flats.

If you buy a slightly longer spike I find that by the time they wear down they are still long enough to grip.

The problem is the spikes you get are usually so short that they wear down very easily
