Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Thought I'd find you here hp!

I am also tri-curious. holgs loved your post.

*waves to Old Croc*

I am loving the swimming, always love the running but just can't feel the love of the bike yet. Will I ever? Been out on bike 4 times now and my pace is improving. Methinks I need an expensive road bike rather than a cheapo mountain bike ;-). hubby won't let me though.

I would love to do an Ironman but then I went from half mara to 55 mile ultra in not many months.....

I have an addictive personality....

I didn't realise that it led to harder stuff? I thought a sprint was just for fun. I could handle it. Sure, I only got into it cos all my mates were doing it. Sure, it was a buzz. Felt great. But what's the harm?

But now I've started hanging about on EntryCentral.com. I'm not sure a sprint will do it for me. I've started looking at standards. People have been telling me that they've done a half Ironman. And it was good. So good. Oh goawd, I know I shouldn't but...

Sprint tris are a halfway house in the same way 5K and 10K races are halfway houses... To the same extent, they don't demand too much traning if you just want to get round, but they are brutal and painful if you are racing.
They are also a huge amount of fun.

Thanks Mrs S and HOD

Someone asked about distances for Sprints - traditionally it was 750m swim ( open water ) 20km bike and 5km run.

Then the sport took off and more pool based triathlons sprung up so now most of them are based like this:

350-500m swim, 20km bike and 5km run.

Personally I think that anyone that can finish a sprint can finish an ironman, in the same way that anyone that can run a 10k can run a marathon, not a lot of difference.
Yeah much more training but the fundamental mechanics are there.

BUT

The key is you have to enjoy it or you won't want to do the training.

OK so the novice one I'm doing is 400m swim, 8 mile bike and 3 mile(ish) run. Thats not far off a sprint really is it? I'm pretty sure I could do the 20km on the bike :) Hmmmm!

That pretty much falls under the banner of a sprint these days ( bloody hell I sound old )

Not much difference between 8 miles and 12 miles in terms of biking. Just make sure you do a couple of brick sessions at some point to get your body used to running off the bike. Say 30 min bike ride and immediate 10 minute run or similar.
