Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

i'd rather not know the exact course, fair enough if you've ran it before you'll know it but i prefer to *go with the flow* but its like everything, each to thier own n all that

my run this morning was just ok, i'm bit tired

I find that if I run the exact race course (or even the exact race distance) I start to play games with my mind and try to compare with race day and it just messes with my head basically. I study the course map and profile really careful and memorise the main landmarks and inclines so I can still gauge when I am and when I need to save a bit and when I can go all out. But to me, training and racing are best kept separate phsycologically, otherwise I run the risk of training like I race (too fast!) or racing like I train (too slow!).

Or you can even end up like Riga, racing an actual train! :-)

I agree Katie, it can be quite demoralising but also I don't think it's a good idea to do a race distance run two days before an event either - especially on teh course you will be doing because it would be far too tempting to get near if not on race pace which could leave you low on energy too. The main thing for me though would it would muddy the waters as you say between training and racing.

I ran the route of my first 10K a few times before the race as it's in the town where I live and I thought psychologically if I knew I could run the route I would be good on race day. It worked for me, but I've not done it with any other races I've done.

Max, I knew a kid at school whose bike was his best friend. He used to talk to it. When we went on a field trip he missed it so much he when he went to bed he told the wall all about it.

Not that I'm suggesting anything, you comment just reminded me of him

Thanks for the feedback KatieS and others. I see your logic but I still feel much better in a race if I know the route.

Max, Keep the faith. You will soon be back on your feet.

Dio, did you go to my school. The kid at your school reminds me very much of my childhood. Even my imaginary friend wouldn't speak to me :-(

Nice run to work today. Legs feel fresh after my enforced break last week. It's still pretty warm out there though :-)

((Max)) That bike will be holding you in good stead for October

Went out last night to the club 5K race, and knocked a full 1min 20secs off my PB. I was gunning for a PB, but I never dreamt I could do it that quickly. Just goes to show that my training is actually working. I'm a happy boy today ! :-)
