Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

A few random thoughts....

[1] How many people have failed to reach their marathon goal by completing the 5 long runs = 100 miles?

(Maybe Fetch could do some amazing statistics on long runs prior to marathon and marathon time, perhaps he already has!!!)

[2] What works (and the definition of works is to be debated) for one, may or may not be successful for another. As others have stated we all have different past sport histories, different marathon histories, different genetics?

[3] VO2 max can be measured and is an indication of MAXIMUM marathon performance.

[4] Aerobic (or lactate ability(?)) can also be measured and a good indicator for whether or not you'll fall apart between miles 20-26.

[5] Running FAST all the time is stupid.

[6] Variety, run FAST stuff FAST and slow stuff SLOW is good.

[7] Heart Rate Monitors don't lie and the perceived effort level is rubbish as the mind plays games.

In point [1] above FR do you mean how many folk have failed to reach their marathon goal IN SPITE of doing 5 long runs, or BECAUSE they did 5 long runs?

I did a marathon off the back of no runs longer than 12 miles. I got a PW by over 2 hours. Can anyone explain that?

I did a marathon on the back of a 16 week RW training programme, and had a mini-stroke 3 days later (true). Logic is rarely a concept easily applied to the human body.
