If I was really concentrating on a half and wanting to get absolutely everything I could out of it, I think that my longest run would be 17-18miles in training (about 1.5x race dist). I can understand that for a marathon, time may dictate that doing 1.5x26.2 is a bit too long for most people, but 26 should be doable. Think about all the training you put in over the 16 weeks build-up - the difference between 22 and 26 is at most (for most people) an extra hour....

DT - that's what I am doing - 7x20+ Already done 2x20, doing Rombalds Stride this weekend as a training run (22), then Belvoir challenge (26), 2x20mile road races + one other easy 24 on my own 3 weeks out before taper. |

Some training plans go over distance - isn't that the Kenyan training method or something?

Race distance in training - 100% NOT NEEDED Planned race time in training - 100% a good idea If you pace a long run correctly then you would run between 20 -23 miles taking around or slightly more time than you expect your race day marathon to take. It is more important for the body to feel the time you expect it to run for than the actual miles. |

(which would explain my half hour marathon pb the week after a double marathon) LOL I really think it comes down to how much training your body can take some people get injured on higher mileage, some dont You wont get any pb if you dont make it to the start line |

DT- you should have an advantage in going back to road running. I've found running on the fells has improved my endurance significantly. You just have to make sure you get the tempo runs/speedwork in as well, otherwise you end up like a lot of the one-paced fell runners who only have one speed because they don't do speedwork etc!
