Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

tiamo69 This, my 1st Marathon & i was well prepared (mileage) but not for the HEAT!
it was a definite Race of 2 Halves...

At both 10 mile point & Half Marathon distance i felt fine & was well on course for a Sub3:30...

Then, i started to slow down around 15-16 & really started to flag around 18 mile point...
Embankment was absolute Hell for Me!

Fininshed in 4:24:13, went to Anthong Nolan reception, had my Post Race massage & then started to throw up continuously! Taken to St Jonn's Ambulance & later admitted to Hospital, as i'd been so sick, i'd competely dehydrated & desalinated myself!

2 extra days/nights in London Hospital, on a Saline Drip, before i was allowed to return home...
For some reason, the Coach didn't wait for me!!!i

rhb I remember little of the day. The start, a bit. The Cutty Stark having to stop en-masse as there was gridlock. We danced the YMCA for a minute or two! Tower Bridge - what an experience! Seeing my Dad just after that. The relative quiet through Canary Wharf, then seeing Dad again just before the Tower. The cobbles, and the poor gent who tripped over ahead of me on the matting! Embankment - pretty close to matchin the tower Bridge Experience. Running in tears at 25miles as I realised that I'd finish and all the hard work from January to April in prep had paid off. Turning off the Embankment and realising that the bit upto the palace is considerably longer than it looks on Telly, then turning into the finish straight, crossing the finish line and heading off to the pub for Massage, Chilli and a few pints of Guiness. What a day. :)

Musical Journey Thursday 10th April
Wakes up and looks out of the window at the preposterous sight of a flurry of snow. Rubs his hands at the prospect of skiing the 26 miles instead.

Sunday 13th April
Up at 5am and a perfect morning ! Nervous anticipation as I travel down to Greenwich park.
Mile 0 - 9.45am - excitement and the realisation that 5 months of training through a cold, wet and dreary winter is all about to pay off.
Mile 1 - It takes 6 minutes to walk to the start line, and an amazing adrenalin rush as I begin the race. My body feels so good, could I break the world record ?
Mile 2 - They said the atmosphere would be great, but this is something else. I join in a group rendition of OGGY, OGGY, OGGY, OI, OI, OI
Mile 3 - A distant church bell rings out the tune to Chariots of Fire - magic !
Mile 4 - I pass the first of many pubs, the landlord is up on a ladder and belting out a karaoke rendition of 'Run, Run, Run' by 'The Who'.
Mile 5 - I look over to my left shoulder, and cant believe that running next to me is a friend I haven’t seen for 7 years, we do a double take and then warmly greet each other. 33,000 runners, what was the chances of that ?
Mile 6 - Elvis (or is it a look-alike?) is alive and well and running alongside me in the marathon.
Mile 7 - The first landmark as we pass the Cutty Sark to rapturous applause.
Mile 8 - The sun is up and its getting warmer, time to drink some water !
Mile 9 - Its heartwarming to see fellow 'Shelter' runners amongst me. I'm thinking about all the money we are going to raise to help all those homeless children.
Mile 10 - The prospect of having to do another 16 miles is daunting but the crowd support is overwhelming, and a steel drum band adds to the carnival atmosphere.
Mile 11 - I spot a fellow QPR fan (a rare sight indeed) - come on you R's !
Mile 12 - What was that about not going too fast at the start ? I'm getting worried as I'm not even half way yet, and the limbs are starting to ache.
Mile 13 - I cross Tower Bridge and the hairs on the back of my head stand up at the rapturous support from the crowd.
Mile 14 - Something is not well in the state of Cardoza. My legs are buckling, I fear I could be hitting 'the wall'.
Mile 15 - I start to walk, my resolve is beaten. What the hell is happening, this wasn’t supposed to happen !
Mile 16 - I start to question why I got myself into this, have a gone stark raving mad, I could be lying in bed now, reading the Sunday papers.
Mile 17 - The atmosphere as I go through Canary Wharf is truly electric, the crowd urge me on and I elect to start jogging again.
Mile 18 - I break down again, my legs have turned to jelly, I struggle to even walk now, and still 8 miles to go !!!
Mile 19 - I'm angry now. My heart is up for it, but my legs are on a different wavelength. I dream of a hot Radox bath.
Mile 20 - I'm even angrier as I get jostled by numerous runners as they overtake me. I feel like screaming 'No need to bloody rub it in you bas*ards' !
Mile 21 - I start to wonder who it was that decided a marathon should be 26 miles, as I want to have some serious words with them.
Mile 22 - A group of lads roar me on with a football chorus of PIO, PIO, PIO. I break into a jog, to huge cheers.
Mile 23 - The cobbles of Tower Hill prove too much for me as I start to walk again. St Johns Ambulance looks over, I try not to catch their glare, I'm sure they are whispering about how awful I look.
Mile 24 - I spot Roger Black smiling as he interviews someone and I wonder if he would be smiling if he had just run 24 miles, the smug git.
Mile 25 - I vow to finish strongly as I come through Blackfriars tunnel onto Embankment. My legs go into overdrive, and at last I start to overtake people !
Mile 26 - Into Parliament Square, onto Birdcage walk and then past Betty's palace, what an awesome feeling as the pain subsides and I soak in the cheers of the crowd and spot the finish line on the Mall. Its all over. 4hrs 26 minutes, I collect my medal and feel an overwhelming sense of achievement. But will I ever walk again ?!

Legless what a disaster, everyting had gone so well in training and pre races, was on for 3.40/3.45 till 21m then right leg went, huge muscle spasms, had a 10 min massage from St Johns guy who advised me to pull out, so i obv ignored him and limped/jogged the last 5m
