He definitely shouldn't decide on the basis of some randoms on the Internet who have never seen him run!

He should be trying out plenty during training to see what he likes.

My objection to the 4% things would have been price, rather than ethics. Although I also do think the sport needs to lay down some boundaries, because we're heading towards (maybe already at) LZR swimsuit territory.

He’s tightfisted too ptb!

Just to pick up the point about people seeing you run etc. That logic doesn’t appear to apply to the VFs though? No-one says “get your gait analysed, and you might be in the xx% of people for whom the VF suits”. They just get bought by anyone and everyone. Why might that logic not equally apply to all other racers (accepting that training shoes in which more miles are accumulated may be more likely to provide some injury resistance, or injury triggers, if the right or wrong ones are chosen)?

The Nike noise is loud enough in the T&F circles for lots of club runners to have strong opinions about buying into the Nike world, from elites downwards (positive and negative). I utterly reject the premise that I should choose shoes based on a perception of a company’s influence over the sport in general (though ethics in terms of manufacturing locations / child labour could / should be a factor I take into account).

My own opinions about VFs have changed a little - I still would reject them for me as a means to an end of achieving a faster time in their own right, simply because I want to benchmark my own capabilities and limit the impact of equipment factors when looking at personal progress. But for a youngster starting out in road racing I’d reckon you should jump on the bandwagon now and set off into this brave new world of shoes which promote better efficiency, and particularly so if racing for position is important.

And in a few years time I would fully expect that whatever magic sauce Nike have concocted to make the VFs work will cascade across other brands and down the product line too, so I won’t be able to remain VF-free for ever, in all probability. (All of course fodder for discussion on another thread really!)

Anyway, back to racers - Adios seem to be a common pick, and I’ll point him towards the NBs too. Any Saucony experience / recommendations (that’s his current shoe brand)?

Totally agree on the 4% fit lark. In fact, I think if you’re going to have a shoe for racing only then you can get away with pretty much whatever you want as you’re not in them often.

I’ve seen the adidas, saucony, Hoka, and brooks rivals to the 4% are all now available. If it’s about cost and not a more fundamental rejection of Nike, then what about a lightly used pair off eBay or somewhere (Chris did that)?

On Saucony, I have run a marathon in a pair of Kinvara but if you want a new model of those they’ll cost more than the recent deals on 4% which basically got them down to £100.

Over the page Larkim's said his son was against Nike as well.

I get the objection TBH.

I don't think PtB was advocating gait analysis, he was saying Larkim's son should work out what works for him.

I said on the VF thread that as I run in low drop shoes and haven't liked 6mm+ drop shoes, the Nikes on paper don't suit me.

WW, which available adidas model is their 4% rival ? I know some of the sponsored athletes have been seen in prototypes of a new shoe at New York etc, but didn't think anything was launched yet ?

Cam - not used or even seen a Carbon X, just read a few reviews.

Roadtrailrun reviews are very extensive and in-depth, this one is multi-users, plus comparisons to rivals at the end roadtrailrun.com

Ok, not my best post then! Before I go back to my cave though - I have a friend who has always run in Hoka and switched to the Carbon X and smashed PBs in all the races he ran. Similar to many folks’ experience in the 4% I suppose.
