I've had a look at the book, and the number of 20 milers in the plans is low for the lower mileage plans
Up to 55mpw: 3 55-70mpw: 4 70-85mpw: 6 more than 85mpw: 8

Great idea for a thread Matt.
I am on the up to 70 mile plan for VLM with the aim to go sub 3. I followed the same last year and fell a touch short (in two ways.....ran 3:04 but was at sub 3 pace until I slipped and fell at mile 19 and that kicked off a bit of cramp).
I plan to modify the schedule a bit and one of those areas will be ensuring I do plenty of 20+ milers, most weeks in fact. I am also aiming to have a high week of 80 miles (was 75 last year) and also planning 1 over distance long run which isnt something I hae done before, but want to try.
I start this plan from a strong position ha ving vracked up 6 x 60 mile weeks prior to the last 3 being a bit lighter, largely due to snow. I ve also bagged a load of 19 milers and 2 x 20 milers already. Mileage for the year will end up around 2850 which is a big increase on my pre vious highest, but I ha ve year on year been increasing miles since about 2005.

Good Luck, MattTheRat... When I'm a proper runner I'd like to attempt the 55 mpw plan but I'm not there yet!

Good thread idea Matt.
Like Baz above I'm broadly following the up-to 70m plan in the first edition book but will adapt it to fit my strengths/weaknesses and to fit around life. I'm also a bit ahead of the game having got a decent base under my belt over the last 2 months and my mileage is around 60/wk at the moment so I'll keep that up for the first few weeks. I guess the areas I will adapt are: more long runs of 20m+; addition of some midweek MP runs; addition of a couple of build up races. I'm also making the non running day flexible whereby I will do a recovery run if I feel like it and might add some more doubles on recovery days to increase overall volume.
Matt - I see you did your tempo at 6.30's when the plan calls for tempos at half marathon pace. Is that based on your current predicted hmp or can you advise on what sort of pace these should be run at relative to your aspirations?

I have a similar question to Richy's ...
My schedule downloaded on Fetch says the long run is 16 miles with 8 at marathon pace this week. This is different to the first edition book I've got. Should that be aspirational marathon pace or what I reckon I'm currently capable of?

Tiger, I would aim for target MP......afte rall thats the pace you need to get used to running.....however so far out I wouldnt mind being a bit off the pace..main thing would be consistent pacing rather than say irst 5 at MP then last 3 a bit slower
I am like you in downloading the fetch plan which doesnt match the one in my book which has me puzzled

OK thanks for that, I'll aim for what I trust I'll be capable of come April. I'm one week ahead of you in the schedule as I'm doing Brighton.

i ran the first session of the 55-70 MPW schedule today. 9 mile with 4 at half marathon pace. On the treadmil because the paveemnts were too icy for fast running. Tough but I got it done. When I used this schedule for A'dam, I was fit with a summer of racing and trainng under my belt, this feels like starting from scratch

I had hoped to be running 70mile + for spring marathon training but given that I've been out injured for 6 weeks and starting from scratch I think a 55-70mpw schedule may be better... I largely follow P&D principles and structure of the paln but have never done it specifically. Maybe I should try this year - realistically will probably be targetting Edinburgh for sub 3hr.
SoaPM - is your injury gone?
