Keighley runners are notoriously rubbish at nav. Never follow a Keighley vest is my advice

The 'early start' is interesting. I took advantage of the early start at last year's Yorkshireman, but never thought about the faster runners wanting to pass on single track/narrower parts of the course. I found it really frustrating (I stepped off the course so that I didn't block the route for anyone), as I couldn't keep my slow plod going! Another race I started early didn't have any narrow sections and that was much better, so I think it depends on the course and I can sort of see why FRA are bringing this rule into play particularly on races in more remote terrain, but it's still a shame for us slower runners who weren't always so slow 😉

Pretty sure the Hobble has got early start dispensation again this year. I always tend to take advantage of it as I'm not a fan of running in huge crowds (and it's not like I'm challenging for the win!). Plus I know when to start so I'm not being caught until it widens out a bit. Also, while GPX use is banned, the huge number of people who are looking at their watch just before coming up to turns is quite high (at least where I was in the field last year). |

No watch nav must be v v difficult to enforce. Though it feels like, particularly at the sharp end, it's a sport which has a high degree of integrity about it. Has anyone high profile been caught / accused of sneakily using a map on an important race?

Two very different people told me basically the reason why the no nav rule was brought in because podium finisher(s) were using on championship races and felt to be completely against the fell running ethos. Whether it's happened since, I've no idea. |
